I appreciate AB for supporting a social cause. But given there is no dearth of healthy sperm donors with good counts, it largely remains a non-issue. IMO, AB should go for more serious issues & genetic counseling prior to marriage is one such area. Thousands of abnormal babies r born every year out of consanguineous marriages, homozygosity of defective recessive genes & other kinds of genetic incompabilities between couples. This sorry state of affairs can certainly be improved if celebrities like AB reach out to masses & educate them about the need for genetic counseling. I dream of the day when matching the DNA chips of prospective couples will replace the superstitious practice of horoscope matching.

Thanks for sharing the article, though.

with respect - this the biggest crock of excrement

horoscope matching - whilst not practised or condoned by me - is done by largely by the Hindu community

Consanguineous marriages happen by enlarge in the Muslim communities

Indian law at least has made such marriages -for Hindus at least- illegal and culturally such marriages are a strict no no - its akin to marrying your brother or sister

Marrying of first cousins is completely acceptable practice in the Muslim faith where genetic defects are far more commonplace

Consanguinity and horoscope matching whilst both unacceptable to me are a mismatch in your example - the former actually causes potentially debilitating and life compromising disability, the latter is a question of faith - take it or leave it - but its nothing to do with genes

How is it a celebrity's job, lets single out AB, to educate those masses exactly? and what masses? Its only a minority of people who practice consanguinity - but they do so because their faith permits them to do so - who is going to take that on?

as for the "no dearth of healthy sperm donors" I can assure you in the UK there is a problem with a dearth of Asian donors - loads of Asian men are infertile but its kept hush hush so the women needing help or sperm donated by a man from a similar ethnicity have no choice but to "keep it in the family" and either remain childless, or use a known donor from within the family

Listen to this if you have the time

As for the dream - here's hoping that's what it stays - designer babies are not most peoples's cup of tea

Peace out

😃

Dear keenkeen ji, Apart from the fact that I'm a Fan of ur FF, your crock talk cracked me up. KK ji plz don't be such a hip-shooter. May I interpret ur post as an act of going overboard in AB's defence?... or ur inherent excessive defiance? I m reading ur comment which is a total mush & the funny thing is that u know it. I never criticized AB for his campaign. On the contrary I appreciated him in the first place. Nobody can downplay the need of sperm banks as long as the artificial inseminations using donor sperms and other IVF technologies remain the only means of helping infertile couples realize their dreams of a baby. Thanks for informing me that finding sperm donors is a problem for NR Asians '. I did'nt know this earlier. But trust me, we don't have any such problem here in India. Sperm banks generally accept donors with a sperm count of 80 million/ml or higher (which should have minimum number of immotile sperms or sperms of abnormal morphology). Do u know that sperm banks are bound to raise their standards day by day because of the growing number of donors in our country. From this I conclude that it'd make more sense if AB launched such a campaign in Asian pockets of Britain. Consanguinous marriages cover various degrees of inbreeding & include marriages between siblings (this incest is of very very rare occurrence, though), first cousins or close relatives. I'm sorry but u seem to be underestimating their abundance as well as their genetic complications. Such marriages are not only allowed in Muslim community but are permitted in Jews as well as some Christians (chiefly Protestants). One study places their current proportion up to over 10% of total marriages, globally. Does that represent an insignificant cross section of human population? I m furnishing the reference of following report on prevalence of consanguineous marriages:

https://files.campus.edublogs.org/hsblogs.stanford.edu/dist/1/35/files/2011/03/MorrisonPN0074.pdf

Coming to the genetic aspect of consanguineous marriages, I feel really help less. OMG there is such an enormous data on this subject that even the space available on entire forum is too small to accommodate it. You name any kind of genetic abnormality & it can be derived from consanguineous marriages. In strict genetic sense, the most drastic effect of continuous inbreeding over several generations is segregation of pure dominant & recessive lines '' it most commonly leads to expression of defective recessive traits which could otherwise go unexpressed in an instance of out breeding. The most infamous examples of inbreeding r reported from populations of Aschenazic jews & include cases of several debilitating errors of metabolism (e.g; Tay-Sach's disease, Gaucher disease, Nieman-Pick syndrome)'.& the list goes on expanding as new cases r reported from various labs. If u r looking for a scholarly review, the following link may help u to some extent:

https://www.pnas.org/content/107/suppl.1/1779.full

There is a clear connection between horoscope matching & consanguinous marriages as long as both lead to the same outcome '' one of neglecting genetic compatibility. When a person is ready to decide a marital match on the basis of horoscope, it is only obvious that he/she is not interested in genetic compatibility. So what was the agenda? To me it was genetic compatibility vis a vis Sperm donation. Both r important but the former is a far greater concern than the latter & calls for greater awareness n campaigning. Let there be no doubt abt it. The concepts & practices of eugenics, euphenics, amniocentasis etc are aimed at improving the quality of our genome. Genetic compatibility is not required only to prevent certain autosomal recessive diseases only. Now we know that diseases like obesity, diabetes & cancer have genetic predisposition. It makes the need for genetic screening all the more important. Hope u'll understand n not argue. And I'm seeking compensation from u'.for making me type such a long post. Lolz. Peace out. I respect ur views.
