SONA KNOWS HER MARYAADA
It's far from easy making a Bolly debut when even before your film releases, your parents are warning potential directors away with statements declaring that your chastity has to be preserved on the big screen. And after your debut, they're gung ho about how their little girl will make for a big star, but of course, she knows her "maryaada" and will never compromise it. With someone called Shotgun as daddy, no one dare mess with the little princess. For with the least sign of an unpalatable proposition, a thundering "khamosh!" from papa would scatter even the most determined filmmakers with a 'liberal' vision like chickens!
THE TRAITS OF A SINHA GIRL:
• Thou shalt do movies that require you to play the 'typical Indian heroine' as daddy said, even if it means that your second film ("Rowdy Rathore") looks exactly like your first ("Dabangg"), that playing Mandakini in "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2" but not doing her wet white sari routine falls under the purview of the 'typical Indian heroine', and that the said type of heroine will not be out of place at all in a film like "Race 2". We can only tremble in fear of being subjected to a "zara zara touch me touch me, kiss me kiss me" by a sari-clad Sona!
• Thou are free to do any role since you are, after all, out of the crib, but are also expected to remember at all times the maryaada of the Sinha khandaan. Not to forget, you're an actress and absolutely free to choose your films.
• Keeping the aforementioned maryaada in mind, thou shalt not do any such thing that can remotely be labelled as an 'item song', even though you are free to say you're open to doing 'dance numbers' that you are comfortable in (although what the difference is, we're still guessing). Same applies for other Bollywood fare – no kissi wissi, no short-short clothes. And bikini? Don't even go there!
• No one shalt dare write about your link-ups with your co-actors, even though you gush about them on chat shows (Ranveer, we hope you have your running shoes handy always).
KHANDAAN KEHTA HAI
PAPA SAYS: People are praising her look in "Dabangg". After a long time, a typical Indian heroine was seen. Sonakshi will continue to do roles that are within the boundaries of self-respect. She will not compromise her values for some rat race.
SHE SAYS: I come from a certain background and family name. I have boundaries I wouldn't cross. If there were such scenes (like Mandakini's waterfall nymph act) in any film I was offered, I wouldn't do them. I have restrictions.
I'm not scared of doing item numbers. When I did stage shows, I was wearing what I was comfortable in and doing the moves I was comfortable doing.
MAMMA SAYS: As an actress, Sonakshi has every right to decide what she wants to do and what she doesn't. It's her call. There is a limit for everything and, of course, every family has its own maryaada. We've already told her that we have certain maryaada and she shouldn't cross her limits
LINK-UP? KHAMOSH!
It was widely reported how Sonakshi's link-up to "Lootera" co-star, Ranveer Singh, had Shotgun fuming. After reports that the two were celebrating Valentine's Day together, a daily reported how a livid Shatru called up Sona and other unit members demanding an explanation, and even that she be sent home immediately. We don't know what it took to pacify him, but we do hope the film's crew wasn't put under armed watch so that no one would live to tell such tales.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DEOL GIRL
Being a Deol beti is no cakewalk. You have a father who was a pehelwaan before joining films, and was the original He-Man of Bollywood, always thirsty for blood (remember 'Kutte, main tera khoon pee jaoonga'?). Then you have an elder brother (Sunny) with a dhai kilo ka haath, jo agar pad jaaye, toh aadmi uththa nahin, uth jaata hai!
TRAITS OF DEOL GIRLS:
• Thou shalt have a licence to slap. Esha was tagged 'Slapping Beauty' after she slapped a young'un who misbehaved with her during the premier of "Dus". Then she slapped Amrita Rao, who dared to abuse her in front of "Pyaare Mohan"'s director. Her third victim was actor Zakir Hussain. Though it was only for their role in "Darling", the slap came a bit too hard on poor Zakir.
• Thou shalt always say 'My daddy strongest'. Both the girls gush over dad and have confessed they want a man just like him.
• Thou shalt obey mommy. Be it playing director to relaunch Esha's career, to deciding Ahana's debuts film, Hema knows best.
PAPA KEHTE HAIN
• Bollywood is not the right place for girls.
• I want Esha to get married soon and settle down, kaam toh chalta rahega.
• Ahana won't do films, she has other interests.
• Ahana is a farmer's daughter. Woh mitti se judi ladki hai, she is into organic farming.
• Ahana won't act in movies ever.
DUTT WOMEN DON'T ACT, IT'S OUR FAMILY'S LEGACY
TRAITS OF A DUTT GIRL
• A Dutt girl respects her family's legacy, does not enter Bollywood.
• 'Shaking ass' aka item numbers are out of the question.
• Dutt women are above 'struggling' – something the film industry usually demands.
KHANDAAN KEHTA HAI
PAPA SAYS: I'm not encouraging my daughter to do films at all. It never happens with the Dutts. My sisters or my niece could have been in the movies too, but that is not the way my father raised us. My father never wanted any female from my family to join the industry. Not because it's a bad place for women but only because it's a huge struggle for a woman. Being the oldest in the family, I can't give up that legacy. She is keen, but then she has studied forensic science, which is also a great career. Trishala is a forensic scientist, full stop. She has such a good job. Why would I want her to come here and shake her ass in films?
SHE SAYS: He's not okay with me joining Bollywood at the moment. We have not had an opportunity to seriously discuss it. He is busy with his work and new family. But ultimately, the decision is mine either way. I love my dad, and I'd love to make him happy, but if he doesn't support my decisions, all I can do is say I'm sorry.
