Screenindia-TVs wicked brigade-Urmila

They rolled their eyes, raised those perfectly-arched eyebrows and threw a taunt or few at the protagonist every time they showed up on screen. Komolika of Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Ramola Sikand of Kaahin Kissii Roz set the rules for playing a vamp on Indian television. The trend continues today even though the names have changed. Here are some of the best of the 'worst' from Indian soaps.

Rukhsar Rehman as Dr Mallika

Kuch Toh Log Kahenge

Her talent at rolling her eyes and pouting is as good as her tricks that wreak havoc in the lives of the show's protagonists. Dr Mallika, the jilted lover in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, is among television's sophisticated vamps. Always dolled up in beautiful sarees with her hair neatly pulled back in a ponytail, she is a senior surgeon at the hospital alongside her love interest, Dr Ashutosh. While Ashutosh and Mallika have been college buddies, the former's constant rebuffs of her affection have turned Mallika into a bitter, conniving and insecure woman. For how long she will remain that, is just about anybody's guess.

Vandana Vithlani as Urmila Shah

Saath Nibhana Saathiya

She is forever brimming with fanciful plans and schemes to take over the wealth and status that her daughter's in-laws, the Modis, enjoy. It is another story that Urmila's plans always fall flat. She is the vamp with comic timing, the comedy being unintentional at most times. Urmilaben's existence revolves around conspiring against the Modis along with her gullible daughter Rashi. Right from stealing money, exchanging lottery tickets and causing misunderstandings between various members of the Modi family. Urmila is the reigning queen of kitchen politics on television today.

Kanika Maheshwari as Meenakshi Vikram

Rathi Diya aur Baati Hum

Manipulation is her middle name. Insecure and jealous of the progress that the show's heroine and her sister-in-law Sandhya has made in life, Meenakshi is forever trying various means to pull her down. She even willingly sets fire to her husband's business of saris in the godown, just so she can plant the blame on Sandhya. Not that it works. Ever. However, this honey-laced vamp makes sure that Sandhya does not get a whiff of her wicked ways.

Mona Vasu as Richa Thakral

Parichay - Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka

Stylish, lively and a party girl with a law degree in hand, Richa is the good girl-turned-bad on Parichay. She used to date the show's protagonist Kunal Chopra, but circumstances forced them to part ways and the dropping TRPs forced her to turn into a vamp. Over the last few months, her villainous acts have multiplied as she attempts to murder the hero's wife and then slaps a rape case against him. If the producers have their way, Richa is a serial killer-in-the-making!

Eva Grover as Niharika Kapoor

Bade Achche Lagte Hain

Every television vamp, by rule, has a set of people she loves and lives for. Niharika Kapoor is an exception. All she cares for is her stepson Ram Kapoor's property, often turning a blind eye to her own children's feelings. Threatened by Ram's wife Priya, Niharika is busy planning her ouster. But little works and she is always left huffing, puffing and muttering, "Main usko dekh loongi!". Famous last words.#
