A/n: Finally, the second chapter; this was a little tough for me to write because I wanted to move the story without rushing it too much; hope I succeeded.
Not much Anjali/Singhania in this update since the next few chapters are going to be filled with them!

Chapter 2: Signing Up To Meet The Devil
"Di! Are you alright? I saw you falling down near the steps. Are you feeling dizzy? Shall I take you to your room, Di?" Akash and Payal piled questions alternatively, stopping only when Anjali smiled, amused. "Stop it with the rapidfire, you two. I'm fine; No, I'm not dizzy. But yes, I would like to go to my room and no, neither of you need to accompany me; I can manage myself. You two should go deal with the guests," she replied, sending a significant look to the person who had been standing a little behind Akash and Payal.
Understanding her cue, Payal excused herself and walked off to where Mami was standing; near the drinks stand. Anjali saw her stop Mami from drinking the punch she had assumed as fruit juice just in time.
Akash stayed put though and seemingly, was intent on taking his brother's position as official worrier for the night, "But how did you fall, Di? I saw some one near you when you were getting up; who was it?"
"It was no-one, Akash. Just some random stranger who couldn't watch his steps," she replied rather snappily as her eyes turned to him. "Di?" Akash's surprised voice brought her back; Anjali belatedly realized that in her hurry to give a sharp reply to the stranger, she had probably offended Akash.
"I told you, Akash. I'm fine. Now, I need to go to my room and put my feet up if you expect me to be awake and fresh for tomorrow. Now go, act like the good host that you are," she shooed Akash and was about to walk away herself when Akash called her back.
"Di, Bhai wanted me to introduce you to Mr.Singhania. That's why he was waving you over but you were talking with someone else," Akash explained, turning to the stranger who Anjali had finally found the name for. "Its surprising, Mr.Singhania, that you haven't met Di so far," Akash exclaimed, his voice overflowing with pride as he introduced Anjali to him.
"A surprise indeed, Akash though not really because Arnav and I don't talk about our personal lives with each other much. All I know is that he has a sister who he values more than his entire career which I think is foolish, no offence intended of course, Ma'am. Its good to finally meet the famed sister of ASR, Miss. Raizada," even his greeting reeked of disdain and Anjali wondered if someone could be as immovable as this person before her was; even after knowing who she was, he didn't seem to be fazed. There was not even the sign of apology on his face for what had happened before. For all it seemed, they could have been hostile enemies being forced to act polite with each other.
"Namaste," Anjali greeted with cold civility, a part of her mind mulling over the possibility of this person before her being the Singhania his brother couldn't speak great enough about; certainly couldn't be the righteous, fair minded a little too-generous-even-for-Arnav's-taste businessman he had described him to be, "I'd love to stay and talk but I'm afraid my complete attention won't be in it. Excuse me," with that she walked away, leaving him fuming behind. Just as he had imagined; arrogance reeking out of her every pore. Money spoils the good in every human he mused inwardly as the evening passed by.
He'd never have attended such boring functions; he generally stayed away from happy events because one, they brought up awkward questions about why he always came alone and two, he had no patience for the girls who were always on the look out for eligible slaves a.k.a. bachelors. But, he had to admit, Miss. Raizada learnt quickly; there had been none of the expectation in her eyes that second time they had met and for that he was relieved because he had no wish to harm his relation with ASR over a silly girl.

Anjali sighed in relief as she took the braces off; there was a flash of comfort as the artificial thing was removed and Anjali propped her deformed leg, weak and useless as she was, on a pillow and rested her head on the headboard, closing her eyes as she unavoidably relived the evening's memories.
The inquiring looks, the raised eyebrows, the whispered rumors, the quick change of topic when she neared; Anjali had braved it all for her Chote and Khushi. They hadn't affected her then because she had stubbornly kept the encroaching feeling of dread aside. The only thing that had managed to shake her pasted smile had been the appearance of Mr. Singhania and the way she had lost her temper with him made her refrain from giving herself the 100 marks that she had sworn she'd earn that night.
Damn him she thought and was about to take her anger out on the brace lying innocently next to her when the door opened and in a flash, two figured were beside her, scrutinizing her intently.
Arnav's scrutiny was restricted to whether she was in discomfort; Khushi merely looked her in the eye and she knew. That girl saw far too deeply into people Anjali thought, not for the first time. It had been that same capability that had made her see through Arnav but Anjali felt she could have done without those soul searching orbs peering into her just then.
Satisfied that his Di wasn't in any immediate pain, Arnav let out a breath of relief before his berating began. Anjali bore it patiently before she gave her trademark fake smile and chided him affectionately about walking out of his own Reception.
Khushi had been a little harder to fool; Anjali knew she saw that something had rattled her but thankfully, Khushi refrained from asking anything; probably anticipating that Arnav would over-react if he even got an inkling.
As soon as the two had left, she called Payal and asked her to take care of the rest of the Rasams, claiming fatigue. Payal agreed only too happily, eager to welcome her own sister into her in-laws'.
Left alone finally, Anjali lay down on her side, letting go of the control she'd been literally clinging on to. The tears would be here any minute; she knew. It was the only reliable thing that had been in her life these days. She tried to hide her tears before others; and for some people, that in itself became a sin. She's just been divorced and look at her! She's smiling?! As if smiling was forbidden to her; as if happiness was restricted only to those who had no qualms or problems in life. If that was the case, Anjali knew, not one person in the world would be smiling. And certain people went to the extent of being plainly rude to her just because she didn't have the perfect life, like they did; like that Mr. Singhania '
The minutes passed; three, five, ten. Anjali sat up, annoyed. She was wasting her time, he was just another of those people unable to accept that a woman could get out of such a blow so soon. Probably one of the worst out of the bunch of Chauvinists she had met. Thus satisfied with her summing up of his character, Anjali lay back on the bed and closed her eyes, falling into a disturbed slumber, the exhaustion overtaking her finally.
In her struggle to not break into a tirade, Anjali forgot to observe; that for the first time in months, she hadn't cried herself to sleep.

"Chote you're being impossible!" Anjali felt like pulling her hairs out in frustration. Here she was, taking every care, spending every minute she could spend while juggling her job to perfect all arrangements so he and Khushi could go on a honeymoon and what did her dear brother do? Cancel everything because he had a damn party to attend!
"No, Di. You're new to the field and that's why you're pushing this away so easily. This Convention is pretty important. Not that anything major happens during the entire week but its imperative that someone from AR attend; and this isn't one of those events that I can send Aman and be done with it. Someone from the inside needs to go there, to Jaipur; and Akash is already having commitments, what with the Wedding interrupting the normal work schedule. Obviously, I'm the only one left," Arnav explained rather calmly; it wasn't as if he wanted to cancel the chance of spending some time with his wife without the pressures of everyday work surrounding him. And his Di was penalizing him for something that was out of his hands.
"I'll attend," Anjali spoke in a moment of pure instinct; thinking about nothing more than making Arnav agree to her plans.
Arnav sighed and sat beside her on her bed, giving up his pacing. In a move that was completely childish, Anjali turned her face away from him and pouted. Arnav had to hold her chin and make her turn for her to look at him. "Di, really. I'm not trying to slight all the efforts you've put in. Trust me; this is not something I can avoid."
Seeing the unrelenting streak in her eyes, Arnav approached in a different line, "Okay, how about this? You've booked the tickets from Delhi for the first night of the Convention, right? I'll attend the inaugural party, be there for the first hour or two and then Khushi and I will take my flight from Jaipur. Is that sufficient enough?"
Anjali smiled, delighted at having her brother relent. But just as the joy faded, she realized, "But you said you needed to be there for the entire week, Chote. Won't it be like wasting your time if you leave as soon as you arrive?"
"Yes, Di. It is necessary that I be there for the entire event but it can't be helped. Not when my Di and my wife are conspiring against me," his eyes twinkled as he grinned. Anjali smiled and hugged him close. Her Chote had changed so much for the better; and to an extent, Anjali could comfort herself in the knowledge that all the pain she had gone through hadn't been in vain.
"I still hold my offer, Chote. I could come with you and stay back till the end. I'm no stranger to traveling alone," Anjali offered and she could see Arnav waver. "But Di, you hardly know anyone there; it will be difficult for you'"
"Chote, you can introduce me to the people before you leave; that way, atleast they'll know who I am, right? And as for me not knowing anyone, don't worry. I've met quite a few of the Client's wives; I'll do well enough," Anjali assured and Akash, who had just entered the room, supported her.
"Di is right, Bhai. And our Associates will want to meet with Di, since she's now becoming a working partner and all," he explained and Arnav nodded.
"Okay, but what about the rest of the fortnight; who'll take care of everything else here?" Arnav asked; relieved though he was, he was still miffed that both his siblings were taking stands against him.
"I'll take care, Chote. You yourself said this is the only major thing coming up in the month, right? That you had pushed all other meetings aside because of the Wedding and the Conference? And if something does come up, Akash here can help me and if in the implausible situation that Akash can't handle it, we'll be sure to call you. Happy?" Anjali shook her head in irritation. This was worse than convincing a little kid to go to a Boarding School.
"Alright Di," Arnav agreed and went on to give her detailed instructions on the way she had to behave there. Though she knew he was doing this just so that she wouldn't be uncomfortable or out of place, Anjali was a little annoyed; it wasn't as if she had never gone to a Business Convention!
"Thanks so much, Di!" Khushi clung to her neck as she told her the good news later, "I've always wanted to visit Nainital and the last time I didn't even reach there! All because of that Laad Governor!" Anjali chuckled at Khushi's complaining.
"Don't worry, I'll be sure to tell the Pilot to safely take you there this time since Chote and his SUV are so unreliable," Anjali assure her and Khushi smiled, already in her own world. Anjali left the room quietly, her mind already starting to panic over the next day, when they'll have to fly over to Jaipur; it had been so long since she had gone out among strangers. Will she mess up? Calming herself took almost the entire day and a good part of the next.
Before she knew it, Anjali was seated in Arnav's SUV and was driving towards the Helipad where a trail by fire awaited her.
A/n: This chapter wasn't much, I know. But I had to set the stage for what's coming up next and one or two filler chapters are allowable, right?
Precap:
"Miss. Raizada, I didn't expect you here. What a pleasant surprise," his eyes took in her appearance; she stood out in the entire crowd. For one, she was the only saree clad woman in the room and for two, she was the only one that had come without a date and hadn't found one by then. She'd worn a black saree; the standard color for such parties. The slight gold border enhanced the elegance of the saree and being in the fashion industry, he knew she'd give any model a run for her money, the way she looked.
"Indeed, Mr. Singhania, it is a pleasure to meet with you again," Anjali smiled stiffly as she sipped the juice gingerly. She hadn't expected to meet him so soon, and definitely not in a situation where she was already ill at ease. You signed up for this when you promised Chote, Anjali now deal with the situation she told herself, squaring her shoulders as she steeled herself.
"I trust Arnav is around here somewhere? I remember seeing him before," He asked conversationally, his eyes already looking around.
"Oh no, he had to leave on urgent business," Anjali replied equally casually. She had expected him to nod understandingly and move to the next guest but what he said next, she couldn't have conjured up even in her weirdest dreams.
"You mean to tell me he left you to represent AR Industries!" his face was a mix of shock and insult, as if Arnav had just committed a grave sin by letting her come'
Do comment and like; because this is one work I'm not at all confident about. Its like alien turf for me so I hope you guys would help me with your suggestions?
