About Aarti and PayPal

I think the best way to allay Payal and Palak's fears and suspicions would be to not to force the situation, but for Aarti to just be herself and let the girls come to her...And that will surely happen and perhaps sooner than we think.

They will inevitably be drawn to her, to her exuberance and warmth...they've never really had that have they? poor darlings.

Re: Generational shifts

I think India generally follows the western model of GenX GenY etc in terms of chronology

After all, GenX is the post world war II baby boom...For India the dates are pretty close...it wouldn't be post world war II but post-independence. The generational differences would be marked by different cultural fault-lines. The pre-independence generations having perhaps different attitudes to culture, nation etc than the post-independence generations (who might be less "reverent" of state institutions than the prev. gen that was involved in the struggle for independence).

In terms of newer generations, I can imagine more fault-lines around the events of the emergency in the 70s, and then around the economic liberalization of the 90s...

@Mira : Gen X comes after the Baby Boomers generation (the post WW II). But more on this later.

However, I do agree that the elite, urban India follows the western model in terms of select attitudes - the most common example would be the hippie culture, which of course, originated in the early 60s, reaching a crescendo in the late 60s, in the U.S., and percolated to India, may be in the early 70s, but these attitudes were limited to a very small segment (not as well-entrenched as it was in the U.S,, relatively speaking). But I say, select attitudes since not everything from the U.S. percolates at the same rate and to the same depth. Hence, generational segments more attuned to the Indian movement in various areas makes sense.

And, I would think on the same lines as your classification above. However, post independence, India was involved in 4 wars until 1971, unlike the U.S., and then of course the 90s liberalization. The emergency was huge but short so, I don't see a generational impact due to this and eighties was sort of vague, really. It would be interesting to review these periods more closely in detail.

The millennial generation however may not see the same time-lag as in earlier generations since it is strongly indicated by the technology aspect and its spread.

And the big one is that we tend to look at these generational comparisons with just the urban elite in mind. It would be interesting to see in a similar classification for the rural India.
