Avika has grown up since her Anandi days. However, it seems that the tag of Balika Vadhu would not leave her. In her new show Sasural Simar Ka she now plays 18-year-old married woman Roli who romances her onscreen beau, co-star Manish Raisinghani.
Ironically, Avika is now officially playing all that her first show stood against, being a Balika Vadhu.
To a question on Avika's actual age hindering the romantic role in the TV show, Manish said, "It won't be a problem for me to romance her."
So far the couple has not been seen in intimate scenes, but TV is all about suggestions, from honeymooning in Mumbai to having romantic dinners. For this hit pair it might not be awkward but others from their own industry are not amused.
Indian Television Academy chairperson Shashi Ranjan said, "She might be shown to be 18, but people know how old she is."
Centre for Social Research director Dr Ranjana Kumari said, "Well, it's bad enough that we have tolerated the image of a child bride. Today we are in the middle of a discussion to evolve strategies to do away with child marriages because this is having serious consequences on women. Women are getting disempowered and we have a high maternal and child mortality rate. Now we are showing a teenager in love with an older man. We should not allow such serials to be aired."
If India Today publishes a article with comments by Indian Television Academy chairperson and Centre for Social Research director who are against this serial, it is obvious that ssk does not have a long future'.
