Elena checks on Alaric down in the cellar, bringing him supplies. Damon slipped in a copy of "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde". Ric thinks he should stay locked up until they can convince his killer alter ego to give up the white oak stake. Ric wonders what Klaus will do if they don't turn the stake over to him. "Wage war, kill people. You know, Klaus stuff," Elena says. Stefan is going to watch over Alaric. Elena and Damon are going to go to Denver to pick up Jeremy. It was Stefan's idea. He thinks she has some unresolved feelings for Damon. Elena tries to talk to Stefan before they leave, but he just tells her to be safe. Caroline comes to school to find Rebekah has overtaken her decade dance. The theme was the 1970s and Rebekah changed it to the 20s. Matt defends the 20s idea and Caroline storms out and Matt follows her. Their show worked. Caroline has the free day she needs. Matt tells her to tell "him" he says hi. Stefan brings Alaric booze to him help sleep and bring on the killer. Stefan joins him. Alaric knows they might have to torture the information out of him. Stefan needs to know if Elena has feelings for Damon. Damon and Elena find Jeremy at the batting cages. They want him to talk to Rose to find out who sired her. Jeremy says he has plans with a friend first. Elena sees the "friend" too late, it's Klaus' brother Kol and he immediately cracks Damon across the head with a baseball bat. Kol goes for a metal one but Damon picks up the bat splinter and skewers him first. He's not dead, but it will give them a head start. Damon, Jeremy and Elena head for a crap motel to talk to Rose. Damon tries to taunt her into coming out. He tells them she spent her last day in paradise, soaking in the sun and she didn't fear death. Elena knows that's not how it went down. It was the dream Damon gave her. Rose is there. Caroline heads out into the woods, looking for someone. Tyler meets her. "You have no idea how much I've missed you," he tells her. Then they start making out and head down for some cave sex. Matt gives Rebekah a ride home. She's suspicious of his ulterior motives. He says there aren't any. She seems to believe him, and maybe is a little sweet on him. Inside the house, Rebekah is not pleased to see her mother Esther has returned. Rebekah asks for one good reason she shouldn't kill her. "Because I'm dying," Esther says. Rose talks through Jeremy. She says she's enjoying the other side, including not having to run. Rose tells Jeremy to tell Damon he's still dripping with sex and she misses him. She says she's rooting for him and Elena. Jeremy isn't sure what to make of it. She says Mary Porter sired her. Damon knows her as "Scary Mary" but she doesn't know where she is. Rose is going to do some recon. Stefan and Alaric hang out. He figures his alter ego must hate him, since he's a drinking buddy with vampires. He thinks they're the same. Stefan says it's just the darkest parts of him. Klaus joins them. Stefan explains that killing one Original kills the whole bloodline. Klaus breaks Alaric's neck out to speed things along. Later, Stefan and Damon catch up on the phone. Alaric was wearing his ring. Damon mentions they're holed up in a motel, but doesn't mention Jeremy is with them. Jeremy asks Elena what's going on with Damon but he comes back before Elena has to think of an answer. Back at Original HQ, Esther explains that she's drawing her power from the Bennett line and her connection was severed when Abby died. Her body is dying. Rebekah isn't feeling sympathetic because her mother tried to kill her and her siblings. Esther tells Rebekah she's been watching over her all this time, but she never should have lived a thousand years. Rebekah says she hasn't lived at all. Esther collapses. Klaus comes home and sees his dead mother on the floor. Tyler and Caroline bask in their after glow. Tyler says he feels freer but he's not sure he broke the sire bond. He turned about 100 times in the Appalachian mountains. Caroline explains about the bloodlines and that if Damon finds out they're not sired from Klaus, they plan to kill him. They don't care that it would kill Tyler, too. In the motel, Elena pretends to sleep and watches Damon, with his shirt open, pour himself a drink. He notices her staring and she shuts her eyes. But only for a moment. He walks over to the bed and lies down next to her. She looks at him. She's impressed by what he did for Rose. "Why don't you let people see the good in you?" she asks. "Because when people see good, they expect good, and I don't want to have to live up to anyone's expectations," he says. Elena rolls away, but he holds her hand. She thinks about it but gets up and goes outside for air. He follows her outside (shirt sill unbuttoned). "Don't," she says. "Why not?" he asks. Then she goes to him and kisses him -- a lot. They make out ferociously on the motel balcony, but are interrupted by Jeremy. Rose found Mary, she's in Kansas. Elena tries to pull herself together under Jeremy's withering judgmental stare. Back in the cellar, Alaric returns from the dead, still himself. They can both see it's not working. Alaric takes off his ring and says Stefan has to try and kill him and they'll hope his alter ego has a sense of self-preservation. Stefan thinks about it, then decks him. In Kansas, Elena and Damon go check out Mary's address. They go inside and poke around in the dark. Damon says Mary's creepy, but they still got together. They find her staked to a wall, dead. Kol beat them there. Stefan wallops on Ric, who challenges Stefan to put more effort into it. Blood starts pouring from Alaric's face and he challenges Stefan to keep going. Stefan worries he won't be able to stop himself. Alaric says to bring out his dark side, Stefan will have to tap into his. Stefan charges him and throws him against the wall. Alaric collects himself and seems to come up bad, taunting Stefan for being weak. Kol taunts Elena and Damon, saying Mary used to be a bit of an Original groupie. Kol knows what they were trying to figure out. He picks up a bat and wallops on Damon, trying to even the score. Back in the cellar, Badlaric isn't talking about the stake and Stefan gets impatient and puts him in a chokehold. Badlaric says it's in the cave -- where no vampire can get it. Stefan walks out and locks Alaric in. He leaves to make a call but finds Klaus and Rebekah in the living room. Damon puts himself back together and checks that Elena's OK. Then he asks what she's doing. She tells him what Stefan thinks. She doesn't know if he's right. He thinks she came on the trip hoping he'd sabotage things and make her choice easier. He tells her he's not going to do that this time, she'll have to figure it out on her own. Rebekah grabs Badlaric, announcing she's going to take him to the caves to get the stake. Klaus tells Stefan he knows about Damon's trip to Denver. Stefan asks if Klaus is going to kill him. He thinks if he were going to, he would have by now. Klaus tries to get Stefan's ripper side to come back out. Stefan says he's accepted that part, so it can't control him. "And neither can you. So unless you're going to stake me, why don't you get the hell out of my house?" Stefan says. On the long car ride home, Rose pops up in the backseat, narrating for Jeremy. She tells Jeremy that Elena and Damon had a fight. She knows Jeremy doesn't approve, but she urges him to have an open mind. Elena makes him a better person, but he makes her a better person, too. "Damon surprises her, challenges her, makes her question her beliefs. Stefan is different. His love is pure and he'll always be good for her. Damon is either the best thing for her, or the worst," Rose says. Caroline takes Tyler home to stay with her. She doesn't know what they'll do if it turns out Klaus didn't sire Damon, but she tells Tyler she doesn't want to lose him again. Tyler finds the picture Klaus drew of her and gets crazy jealous. She insists it means nothing, but Tyler says he's going to find somewhere else to spend the night. Down in the cave, Badlaric retrieves the stake but won't bring it to Rebekah. He tells her one stake means only one Original has to die. He offers to make sure it isn't her. She takes a step toward him and crosses into the cave -- which she isn't supposed to be able to do. "I want them all to die," she says. "It was easy to fool Nicklaus, but I thought you of all people would understand. After all, my son did use your body at one point." "You're not Rebekah," he says. "No, my name is Esther, and we have a great deal in common," she says.
