Quite honestly, it makes my blood boil to see so much hatred for a girl solely because of her gender. What's frustrating is to see a woman not being able to see her own worth and not seeing the point of having a daughter. I thank God that I was born in to a family where the birth of a girl is said to be the arrival of Lakshmi and not considered to be some sort of bad omen. Nor has there ever been any difference in the way guys and girls are treated.

Anyway, here's something that sums up my thoughts pretty well. I take NO credit for it at all, it's just something I came across while browsing on Tumblr.

"I don't understand why people feel that being born female is a curse. I don't understand how they can be blind to the person actually doing the birthing; is she not a female? did she not carry a miracle inside her for nine long months, enduring pain most men can barely fathom? I don't understand this patriarchal society. How can one extra appendage put you on a pedestal that high? I'm not trying to launch into feminism here, I'm not trying to say men suck, I'm just trying to understand how one can beat a child to death for being female. It's as if the virtues of women are just blindly thrown aside, pushed under a blanket, and forgotten. Do they not realize that without women, there would be no men. Take for example, in China, when people would kill their daughters to have their only child be a son. Those sons…how would they continue their family line if there were no girls, no women, to bear the children? I don't understand how one can survive without the other. No matter what the religion, there is always man and woman. I don't understand how people can name their children words that mean unwanted? All those girls who grew up in India, forced to believe that they were useless. I don't understand how one human can look at another and determine his or her worth. I don't understand how women can be looked upon as inadequate. Was Athena not the Goddess of strategy? Is Lakshmi not the Goddess of Wealth? Women carry important roles in religion, how can men use the same thing that helps them understand life to belittle those around them? Was the Virgin Mary not a woman? Did a female not give birth to one of the most influential figures in our world today? The inception of the men who claim to have power over us is women. They themselves come from women. How, in turn, can they flip the tables and declare half of their species invalid? I dont understand."

With all the love for a boy child, there is no guarantee he is going to 'take care of you' in the future. Not anymore. Even in urban India, some parents prefer boys because they 'take family name forward'. This is screwed up on the part of educated people. As for rural India, they are not getting educated and any kind of teaching is not having the desired effect.
There seems to be no other way than severe capital punishment. It is more of arm-twisting them than making them realize. But there seems to be no other go. India has hit it's lowest this census. Desperate times, desperate measures.

Indian society is obsessed with male child...even in urban cities people have this mentality tht boy child means investment and girl child means burden...Although nowdays people are educating daughters also but their mindset is still the same.
I'll tell one incident...I am a computer engg and I work work a world famous MNC.
People whom I work with are highly qualified with IIT IIM degrees.
Last month I joinned a new prj and during KT sessions I was chit chatting with one of my male colleague. He's around 24-25 yer old unmarried guy.I just mentioned tht I have a 2 year old son.
His reply was good tht u have a son he'll pay u back.
I was shocked I didnt expect this attitude from such a higly qualified young person.
I just told him U dont kids so tht they can pay u back u have kids because they make u happy...it dosnt matter if they r boy or a girl both bring equal happiness.
I feel sad tht still people have this kind of mindset...I have vowed tht I wont accept any dowry during my son's marriage...and I am going to teach him tht girls and boys both deserve equal respect.

just a point before everyone gets down to bashing Indian society, obsession with male child and successor is not an uncommon thing. Even the so called progressive societies until a few decades back gave boy child more importance over girls child. a lot of middle eastern, african, latin american cultures prefer boys over girls.

It nevertheless is a sick mentality but as i pointed out before, only way to change it is to make the change happen from within. Create self awareness.
