The characterisations are charming. The voice acting is delightful. The visual and verbal jokes are as bouncy and multilevel as we have come to expect from DreamWorks. I just wish I could shake the uneasy feeling that the movie, based on the comic strip by Michael Fry and T Lewis, is really about the terrorists winning. I mean, the cute, funny, resourceful animals are actually four-legged terrorists, out to punish hapless suburbanite humans everywhere.

This feature cartoon is not at the level of Finding Nemo or Shrek, but is a lot of fun, awfully nice to look at, and filled with energy. The action scenes are fun, the characters are well-drawn and voiced, and I thought the film's visual look was sort of lovely. If the animals lack the lofty thinking of their originals on the comics page, they are nevertheless a notch or two above the I.Q. levels of many an animated creature.

No doubt the people at DreamWorks would prefer that their film bring to mind animated classics like Disney's Bambi, but no such luck. Although this tale about a group of woodland critters threatened by their new human neighbours has the technical trappings of a worthwhile Saturday matinee, no one bothered to pay attention to the screenplay. The various writers pad the story with the usual yuks, allusions and some glop about family, but there is no poetry here and little thought.
