Celebrated on April 14 th in the month of Chitthirai, the Tamil New Year's Day is a time to celebrate for Tamilians all over the world. Tamilians believe that it was on the Tamil New Year's Day that Lord Brahma started the creation of the world. What is fascinating about the Tamil New Year's Day is that it happens to be the Bengali New Year Day too. Tamilians exchange greetings of "Puthandu Vazthukal", meaning Happy New Year on the auspicious occasion of Tamil New Year.

Tamilians begin their New Year's Day by rising early and viewing the auspicious light called " Kanni " at dawn. Like others Tamilians too believe that doing and watching auspicious things on the occasion of Tamil New Year's Day will bring in prosperity and wealth and all the good things in the coming year. Kanni is followed by a ritual bath all the Tamilians then gather around the household altar to hold special religious ceremony. There are special prayers for Lord Ganesha with sweets, fruits and flowers been offered to him.

Afternoon is spent by paying visit to the temple for prayers to ensure good luck and prosperity in the coming year. Panchangam or the Almanac is then read in the temple. Tamil New Year is the occasion is the time when ladies are seen decorating the house entrances with Kolam , a design made with rice flour. Car festival held at Tiruvadamarudur on April 14 th is an added attraction of the Tamil New Year.
Rest of the day is booked for visiting friends and families. Gifts are distributed to people like postmen, workers, servants and council workers on the occasion of Tamil New Year. On the other hand businessmen start preparing new account books to mark the beginning of the New Year.

From this Puthandu let's take a step forward with hope and dreams in our minds. Make the most dare things possible in life.
