When I think of filmmakers like Ray and Hrishikesh mukherjee I do not see bollywood inferior to Hollywood.Keep aside the financial and technical aspects, both have made crappy and fantastic films. If only, cinema in India comes together as "Indian Cinema" rather than Bollywood by including the regional language films as well, We can certainly boast of many quality films. But the regional movies do not get the kind of exposure they deserve.Maybe due to language constraints? Maybe subs/dubbing can overcome the barrier?

I see the audience more at fault for the given state of BW than Makers.Indian audience are not open to experimentation. They lap up anything trite with horrifying ease. Filmmakers were scared to experiment because of this and rightly so. Now it has come to a point of making films blindly with whatever the genre the audience is showing inclination to.It surprises me why only one genre fetches maximum box-office returns at any point in BW. If it was romance, family drama before, it is action and comedy now. With very few exceptions.

Anyways, the onething I consider Bollywood superior in is it's song and dance. Some of the songs and lyrics that came out are pure gems. The depth and beauty of certain words and wordings is absolutely divine. I do not find that kind of depth in the English ones. Not even their musicals. Some of them are brilliant no doubt but they are no match to some of the wonderful works of Bollywood/regional films.
As for dancing, at one point of time bollywood was MORE than pelvic thrusting and the same boring moves we see now-a-days. There was a mix of Indian folk and classical dances which were absolute treat. I'm not a fan of aerobics and gymnastics in the name of dancing! Watch Navrang and you'll know what I mean. But with the heavy aping of foreign films BW has lost something which it was so good at. sad!

Comparing Bollywood with hollywood?
I think we need to equate it to where Hollywood and Bollywood originate...
Hollywood originated in the USA, and Bollywood in India...
So as we all know, the USA is a developed nation, and India is a developing nation on its way...
So in this sence, I think Hollywood is a bigger industry and is on a better level of standards, and quality... somehow the products of the Hollywood industry attract the consumers, and is more interesting... there is innovation involved in it most of the times...
On the other hand, Bollywood is a smaller industry... the fact that it revolves around Hindi mainly by itself is a disadvantage in the sense that only a part of the world understands Hindi, whereas English is Global... of course, subtitles exist, but it's not very fun to entirely depend on subtitles... However, since Bollywood is based in a developing country, it can always achieve better standards of cinema.. this industry can develop along with the development of India as a whole...
For example, if you compare the movies Confessions of a Shopaholic (Hollywood rom-com) with Aisha (Bollywood rom-com), both are good, and both have good actresses in them, but the standard of Confessions of a Shopaholic is better than Aishas... I can watch it every alternate day and not get bored... but if I watch Aisha even once a week, it get's horridly monotenous...
And also there are not many Genres involved in Bollywood cinema...
We hardly see Sci-fi movies, we don't see movies which are based in outer space, we don't see too much of Horror movies, we don't see too many documentaries that are eligible to be played in theatres for anyone to watch, etc... what we mostly see is comedies with similar story lines, and sequels which are not very urging, and movies based on current situation in India, etc... not too much of adventure and risk involved...
On the contrary opinion, if you see it in terms of the quality of acting, the actors and actresses and their acting capabilities, I think Bollywood is as good as Hollywood... Aamir Khan is as good an actor as Tom Cruise... and personally, I would say Aamir is better...
I think Bollywood needs to work on the right use of budget (not too much of unwanted non-thrilling publicity) , and the factor which makes anyone want to watch a Bollywood cinema over a Hollywood cinema...
So on the whole, after looking at a few merits and demerits in my perspective, I feel as of today, as of this decade, yes, I think Bollywood is inferior to Hollywood in terms of standard and quality of its products although there have been many precedents (ex: movies like Black, Lagaan, 3 Idiots, etc...) that have upped the image of Bollywood... all I'm saying is that it's not enough...
However, it has a great scope for improvement...
Eventually, if I have to score them on the basis of a scale from one to ten, considering them on the whole,
Bollywood would get a 5 and Hollywood would get a 9...
That's my take... =)
Please do comment if you have any, however, it's just my frank opinion... :)

I think there's no comparison between the two and comparing them is unfair to both of them! Both are totally on different platforms, yet both are entertainment industries, yet they hail from completely different cultures, backgrounds, social norms and beliefs. Comparing the two would only bring about the differences and prove one to be inferior than the other.
