Painful Rapture ~ Chapter 45
"method in the madness" Shakespeare
AS, with concerted effort maintained a front before her son when he announced his decision to leave the army. AS, over the years had somehow learnt to react in crisis situations like a sturdy fortress that took many a battering but still stood elevated and unblemished ...such was the mind set of a army personnel's spouse, but this was her son, the joy of her womb...she touched her breast and her motherly instincts gave way and she wavered, and called for the best person after her beloved Dutta, "Baji! she raised her voice ,and within a second he was there ,kneeled beside her, her cold hand clasped in his, as he looked up into her worried eyes, "AS, kya hoya hai?ab theekh tu hona ?main doctor ko phone kerta hoon,"he decided ,but she tarried him,"nehi Baji ,uske zaroorat nehi, maagar baat ye hai ke, Dutta ka phone ayea tha abhi abhi , bahut pasrshaan tha , ketha hai army choor doon ga"..Baji was dumbfounded,"kya? erha ho gayea hai kya Bhao? dekho AS, ap tension maat lein main abhi usko phone lagata hoon aur pata kerta hoon ke ye kya loocha hai",Baji calmed AS, as he stroked her hand , AS nodded her head "nehi, Baji tu Naku ko phone ker,use baata, kyon ke Dutta ne ye faisla use nehi batiya" she suggested with a degree of hope in her voice. Baji, responded and phoned Naku, confirmed in his belief that she would surely investigate and deal with this odd decision of his Bhao.
Dutta had only just dropped, Naku at the Dera hospital, and her phone rang, before she had acknowledged to Baji about her safe arrival, he rattled on about the crisis, Naku, dropped her clutch bag, "kya! oooh Baji! mujhe pata tha Saab ke maan mein kuch chal raha tha ,pata tha" ,she mumbled, Baji intervened and ordered, "dekh Naku, Bhao zayeeda door nehi gaya hoga? phone him !wapis bola! ,Naku you have to talk to him !chal ,do what Baji is asking you to do !" he stressed. Naku gathered her wits, swallowed her tears and pressed hard on his number.. Dutta drove at a medium speed as he headed from the Dera hospital towards his destination. He crunched gears a couple of times as his mind thought of the news he had just given his mother..what was the matter with him ,how could he be so dense and brainless to tell her of his plans , knowing that she had hypertension! He wiped his moist brow with the fingers of his arm that rested on the ledge of his open jeep window. The breeze teased a few hairs of his close crop of thick black hair upon his brow, he narrowed his eyes as his fingers stroked the corner of his mouth, well... he needed to share his anxiety with his mother, so he went ahead and did it ,and why not? Aye hain woh uske , unhein nehi batya ga tu phir kaise ,...the jeep lurched with a noise as he yet again crunched the gear..ummhh, Naku..hummmh , use nehi batya .. and AS too pointed that out with a degree of chastisement ,he yanked his head to the right and pulled his mouth to one side, haan! nehin, batya Naku ko maine ,so? he narrowed his eyes, and furrowed his brow a tad, good he hadn't told her...his phone suddenly rang and he saw her name flash, and he shook his head , indicated left, veered his jeep to the hard shoulder, pulled to a halt, and answered her call "haan Naku bol, kya hai? abhi to drop kiya hai thujhe ,only just started my journey back, chaal bol! kya problem hai? "he complained. Naku heard him and felt like replying, you are the problem Saab! but decided to waylaid the idea as he would become difficult to handle, so she began with her blubs and sobs, "Saab, woh , voh! I don't feel well at all, I feel sick and light headed,Sssaab ahhh jao please I need you ,thuri daer ke leya he! wapis ah jao ,ap ko dekh loongi tu tabeeyaat sambhel jayea gi , please Saab! ,aagar mujhe pyar kerta ho," Dutta, gave a wee smile as his heart softened at her pleadings..also may be he can redeem himself of the small guilt he felt at not telling her of his decision.." chaal ab ye apna roona dhoona band ker main ata hoon, and you woman ,get your act together fast, jab dekho ,bloody drama, grow up ,ab baachi nehi rehi tu , tere harketiyen! especially mera saath tu baachiyon wali nehi hain!" ,he growled, and cut off the phone. He started his jeep manoeuvred a U turn and sped back to the Dera hospital.
She saw him drive up he parked in the hospital car park and she ran towards him, the breeze and her sprint blew her black bandini sari pallu , the pleated drapes tossed and beat her thighs, and her bosom heaved, as he watched her yet one more time, enamoured by her beauty, she fell against him and he swarmed her in his arms as he felt her petite ,body against his tall frame . He loosened one hand from her back and stroked the side of her face with his thumb and fore finger .she held her face up to him , and he doubled his chin and meet her large green doe eyes, his lips fell open but his eyes stayed aloof, "hummh bol ab kya takleef hoi hai thujhe?,kamm nehi kerna de gi tu muhjhe Naku" he whispererd as his palms pressed and stroked her back...she pushed him away and broke loose, "kaunsa kam Saab? woh kam jo ap choor rehe hain? she accused him as her large green eyes stared at him, paused and continued her tirade,"woh kam? that you are leaving and you never even had the decency to tell me Saab, you just ignored me, out of the equation ! devalued my worth! I share everything of mine with you! but you have gone to square one, elusive ,withdrawn, ..she paused as she shook with anger and he stood aghast before her, "what kind of a relationship is this Saab? just based on the physical then is it?, touchy feely! He took a step forward and grabbed her shoulders and dug his fingers in her soft flesh. "zabaan band ker !before I do something I'll regret! he yelled as his eyes flashed and his eywbrows arched up in peaks in his scowling face. She looked up him defiantly, "no you don't frighten me with your might and muscle Saab! kya karlo ga ap maro ge ? is ke sawa ap ker bhi kya sakta ho? she moaned, and he let go off her shoulders and turned his body the other way and lowered his eyes, and rubbed his fingers tip together. She piped up courage and grabbed his brawny arms and reeled him around to face her, "Saab mujhe jawab chaye, do baton ka? ek ka ap army kuon choor rehe hai? aur dossera ke aap ne mujhe kyon nehi batya is bare mein ?jab ke maine ap se poochtha rehi ,what's bothering you? but you lied and said nothing! She screamed in hurt, her looked at her, both shocked and distressed to see her so. .."Saab why didn't you tell me? am I not close to you ? ok if that's the case is there any point in us carrying on Saab?, let's call it a day! call off the engagement ! she paused and gave a muffled sob, engagement ka kiya hai,! it's only an interim period, between two people's relationship to access if things work out between them before they go ahead and marry... she maintained with bitterness. He walked towards her and watched her with saddened widened eyes, his face clouded in entirety with worry. He parted his lips, loosely, "hummh ,tu humara ristha thujhe provisional lageta hai Naku? haan aura agar tere pas is ka jawab ne ho tu try asking Bappa, maybe he can shower some divine wisdom upon you..now coming to your questions, seeing that you have calmed down a bit ,I shall endeavour to answer them as best as I can, to the first one, why am I leaving the army, all I can disclose is that it's work related, and you know when it comes to my work ,I will never go into the whys? or the nitty gritty..so you might as well forget about waiting for an answer on that one! for you aren't going to get one! he said with a firm face ,and continued ,"now regarding the question why did I not tell you, "well the answer lies before you Naku, mujhe pata tha you will get hysterical, kuch nehi sune ga bas apne dhun mein bakte jai ge , jaise ke tune kiya hai , abhi humare saagai ko bhi torhena ke leya tayaar ho gaye hai tu!, he looked at her as she covered her face with her hands so he couldn't see her weakness, he moved towards her and spread his hands ,"look baaby...I didn't want to worry you ,besides how could I dampen your spirits when you told me that you are going for promotion..he reasoned, Naku removed her hands from her face and shouted at him her eyes ablaze "well Saab let me tell you now ,I am NOT! ,why should I? for whom?, you are taking such a big step! So Iam going to get back at you for staying in the same rut as I am ,bas no desire to progress ab Saab , none what so ever"!she shouted, he gave her an embarrassed smile, "look Naku ab you are being childish, you go for promotion for yourself Naku, for your own personal development not for me"...he reasoned. But Naku, fought back, "Saab ap kyon nehi samjhete ho ke meri zindaga ke har fasala mein ,main ap ko rakhte hoon , maagar aap aisa nehi soochte ho, kyon Saab?, why don't you include me in every aspect of your life? batao?, he knew he was putty in her hands ,he looked up at her, his eyes narrowed but intense for his deep seated love for her ,she felt snubbed and spurned by his misguided move of withholding information from her ,it only seemed right that he correct ,the situation before things go out of proportion, he had to swallow the fact that she dared to question him ,and raised her voice to ,him , he was not used to being spoken to in this manner ! and certainly not from his future wife ,he moved his head the other way and parted his lips and drew a deep breath as he took a step towards her to hold her shoulder..but she shrugged away from his long slender fingers like an broody sulky child, "choor do mujhe Saab, kisi bhi sawal ka koi jawab nehi deta ap, stop being patronising"! she protested as she turned her back to him .He looked at her long slender neck in a French twist at the back of her head and moved closer to her and gently held her by her shoulders and buried his lips on her smooth fair bare neck and muttered amorously ,as he moved his arms from her shoulders to her waist," look baaby tera har sawal ka jawab ek he hai ,pyar hai tujhe se, je nehi sakta hoon tera bagher, mar jawoon ga tera bina" ,she turned and placed her warm palm on his hot mouth, "Saab, maat aise ashub batien mau se niklein, Naku ke umar bhi ap ko lag jaye "she tendered ,and placed her palms on his warm chest and ,he held her close to him, his brawny arms encircled around her warm tiny body. He doubled his chin and rested it on her head, as he remarked, "ay Naku..abhi to tu engagement torene ke baat keraha the , reh le gi apni Saab ke bagher tu? he asked fondly as his palms caressed her shapely back, his fingers ran across her naked back under her black sari blouse. She laid her head on his tough wide sinewy chest and closed her eyes..this expression of his reassured love was noteworthy, but she still desired to know more about him..
She raised her head, brushed her palms cross his chest and moved back, while he pulled her body back, to spell continuation of closeness to his beloved. She squirmed out of his grasp and took hold of his finger tips and led him towards the garden area and found the wrought iron bench closest to the car park ,he followed her like a little lamb..and mused... hope not to the slaughter! She sat him down with all the tenderness in the world .he looked like a puffed face lion , his eyes shifted to make sense of what she required. He relaxed back and crossed his leg and rested his long arm on the back edge of the bench while his other hand stroked the corner of his mouth, "so ab aur kya baat kerne hai thujhe mujhe se , aur koi neya drama kerage kiya? he asked apprenensively. She sat down beside him and looked sideways at him. "Saab, tell me do you really want to leave the army or are you creating waves for some attention? "she smiled ,as she thought best play it safe, he alerted ,and thought it best to behave sensibly, "now Naku do I ever do things for effect? ,"he questioned, she bit her lip and retorted ,"now Saab do you really want me to answer that question, he nodded and she continued "in that case yes you are very effective in your mannerisms ,shall I see aap transparent ho, oh but only when you want to be..with people you trust and bond with, but with others Saab ap aloof ho ,far and distant hain"...she carried on as she checkd his face lovingly. He looked at her with his eyes narrowed under his brow, "listen you pagal aurat, get to the point what are you after? cut out the cosy chumy chitter chatter, you forget I have to head back, aage he tera bemare ka dramey have made a sucker out of me for the second time running! chaal bola ab, ya as usual you will continue with your ridiculous finger play!" he said irritated, she gathered herself and lifted his arm from the back of the bench and held his broad smooth hand in hers ,and with all the love in the world she asked simply, "Saab why have you decided to leave the army? he looked at her and without further hesitation ,answered back in the same simplicity that she had displayed, "Naku there are several reasons, the first being in all honesty, that of recent I am being plagued by the thought that perhaps, my powers of judgement and prempting in a situation are beginning to dither a bit... in the job you cannot afford to make erroneous decisions ,and one needs a holistic view of scenarios ,the what if factor plays a major role in my vocation" he carried on, she studied his down side which showed on his face ,and stroked his hand with her small soft hands ,"Saab, it's ok, people have good days and bad days , but I assume that you may have had one such incident where you felt you misjudged , but you have perhaps have magnified it to such a degree ,that you are willing to let go off of all you stand for , your passion, to serve your country, Saab kya ap apna lakhsya bhool gayea ho? she questioned, he compressed his mouth firmly and avoided meeting her eyes, as he turned his face slightly away from her. She discerned, that he took on board what she said, his calm encouraged her as she continued to stroke his hand, "Saab, you have to grab hold of the truth that you have surrendered your life to the Army, I know should you leave it , Naku knows for sure that you cannot survive emotionally with meagre left overs , after having been part of your profession for so long..Saab can you really say now that your reaction to quit your job really reflects your attitude towards your life? surely Saab jitna main ap ko jante hoon this decision is not normal for you!..she continued and he shifted his bottom and turned to face her his leg still crossed over ,he parted his lips and looked intensely into her eyes," Naku, normal kiya hai? as far as I am concerned it's a setting on a dryer! thujhe pata hai at birth we are handed a list f do's and don'ts to follow, to fit in and that's how we qualify ourselves as "normal", Naku ,dekh we are normal, as long as we share the sameness with everyone else"... he philosophized. She looked at his stubble face and smiled at the depth of words he delved into, but hastened to add, "haan Saab but mera liya you are an ordinary person faced with an extra ordinary job, and our normalcy lies in the sameness of our purpose..to serve our nation"! he smiled at her words of wisdom and bowed his head gently as he touched her cheek with her his fore finger, but continued, "aur dossera reason hai, ke I want to be near AS, thujhe pata hai ke woh theekh nehi rahetein, you know all those years when I stayed away from her in boarding school, I want to make up for them by staying by her in PW..."he confessed. She shook her head in dissension, "and you think this would make her happy ,by you packing up a job that runs in your family? Well then Saab maybe I should pack my job up as well and stay beside AS as her full time carer at PN , that way we can both serve our family, instead of country" ,she suggested. He sat up and spread his legs apart and leaned forward , and positioned his arms on his muscular loins , and entwined his long slender fingers as he closed his eyes briefly and pondered on her proposition. He rejected the idea ,her packing up her job, absolutely not! he would not allow his current mind set, to influence her life and her decisions ,she was his life he loved her much too much for her to give up her career ,for the truth was he would not want her to ! his mind churned over and over again. He sat up again and his gaze spoke to her, that her proposal stood rejected, but to her ... that was the only way she could make him see that he needed to reverse his decision about leaving his job. She reached out for his hand ,yet again, "Saab ,I can understand how you feel, I work with disabled people, and I can see many a times that the three headed monster, of inferiority, insecurity, and inadequacy can paralyze one into inactivity...yaad hai ap ko fight kerna partha tha is monster se...now this monster has risen in your mind and heart Saab, slay it down before it gets to your soul!..Naku ap ke saath hai! we'll slay the monster together !"she said as she rose and sank to her knees and laid her head on his knee. Dutta looked down at her kneeled down figure ..her head on his knee ,and his eyes glazed with tears...he was a blessed man to have a woman like her in his life...he knew that all though he will stumble in life but never fall ,for she will be there to hold him...he placed his palm over her head and stroked her head and she looked up into his eyes..and each held the others face in blurred vision as their tears took charge of their eyes...he held her shoulders and raised her up and sat her beside him in a warm cuddle beside him on the metal bench. He leaned sideways and kissed her bare ear and the side of her neck, " umhh baat sun Naku aaj raat tera flat mein he na main so jaon? kya bolte tu?,he teased with" ahhh jaa,!! and she pushed him away and stood up before him bent down reached for his hands and pulled him to stand up. He finally got up unwillingly with a pouted mouth ,and she swivelled him around and placed her palms on his firm broad back and pushed him towards the car park, he walked with deliberate slow sluggish steps and complained, "oye! kya hai thujhe munno samjhe hai mujhe tune jab dekho baache ke theran treat kerti hai!" she continued pushing his back with her palms ,"ap munno ke theran behave karo ge tu aise he treatment milage ap ko, chaaloo jao kam pe! "she ordered. They got to the car park, and he turned to face her and hugged her in his arms and her arms clung to his broad neck ,he parked his indented chin on the curve of her shoulder, "Naku, you are my soul baaaby, meri rooh tera pas hai ,and yess my gorgeous woman ,we both carry on moving towards our lakhshya...you and me" ..he kissed her on her bare shoulder, and let go off her..and she for the first time let him go willingly with a smile.. he sat behind the wheel and before driving off he tapped his fore head with two fingers in a salute at her ,and she giggled and gave him a salute! She watched the bright tail lights of his jeep gradually getting faint .and she clasped her hands and looked up at the firmament, "thank you Baapa! because of your grace this sticky situation got solved"
Naku , before she went back into the hospital ,stood in the silence of the car park and dialled a number, she smiled her lower lip slightly pouted, "haan Baji "mission accomplished! Saab theekh hai , he 's changed his mind," she said confirmed, contented," ay Naku dhinchak! dhinchak! dhinchak!, kya baat hai re teri Naku! tera Saab fauj se tu baach jayea ga ,tera se bach ke gadher jayega ye ereha !...kya reasons kya deya hoonga ? ye edher udher ke ghamta ho ga , saach main Naku bahut pakata hai tera Saab ,thujhe chaheya her rozz us ke klass le take behja kam ker sahe mein, jab dekh koi na koi drama bazzi kerta hai aur mujhe nautanki bolta hai.salla nautanki baaz!" guffawed Baji, "Baji Maat aise bol Saab ko! adab se baat ker, maat bhul thujh se umar mein bhi bare hain Saab..reminded Naku with mock anger, "haila! Naku tujhe bare jinta hai Saab ke izzet ke ,na re Bhao tu meri jaan or jigar mein hai ,use ke saiwa mera aur kaun hai ..kyon karoon Naku tere Saab pe Baji ek dam ida se fida hai!" he cackled over the phone and Naku shook her head, with a smile, but he hadn't finished, "pata hai Naku, AS ka idea tha ke thujhe bataya jayea ,kya baat hai re, lagan se phele he teri saas apni bahu pe intna maan kerti hai! kya kush kismet lardki hai re tu! main na kha main Bhao ko phone lagata hai , maagar woh bolen , Naku ko phone kar Baji, pata hai Naku tera Saab itna erha hai ka AS ko ushe kehana parthe ke Naku ko batana chahiaya tha Dutta..aise hai tera Saab" ,teased Baaji, Naku, took in what was being said, and weighed the fact that how forth right her mother in law was, she was quick to point out an important factor, almost a sort of a tip for a healthy marriage ,keep your partner informed at all times..she admired her AS ,in time ahead ,she may not need to fear that as is know ,that mother's take their sons sides, Saab's mother was likely to take him to task...she smiled with fondness as she told herself , but to tame the fully grown lion was really a role she would take on..but she would perhaps need all the support going round her ,and a giggle escaped her lips ,and Baji, remarked, "dekha Naku tu bhi us Bhao ki harketoon pe has rahe hai, mujhe boleta hai main hero ka side kick hai, khud kiya hai Sajan ka Salman Khan, ya Singham ka Baji Rao ,ya dabaang ka chubul pandey! ...,Naku giggled again and replied " nehi Baji tera Bhao sirf mera Saab hain...she said softly ,and Baji screamed ,"haila! and shouted, "chaal Naku apna khayal rakhien ,maine ye khaber AS ko deta hoon."..and the call ended.
Dutta stretched his arms and yawned audibly while his back arched his legs swayed as he collapsed on his bed still in his complete, uniform, his taunt booted legs touched the floor. ,Rahman entered and saluted, "jee saar!, and briskly got down to his daily end of day chore of removing Dutta's boots. Dutta closed his eyes, folded his arms and temporarily parked his large head on one of his brawny lower arms. He closed his eyes and envisaged the day when Naku would be involved in the job Rahman was doing , hummmh but he yanked his head, absolutely not...although the woman would try her level best at sticking her hands at this menial task, but he would disallow it how could he ..she was far to precious to him..he would rather have her face buried against his chest..her favourite haven on his body, hummh, he thought about her fair beauty clad in a sari, and he let out a deep sigh at his helplessness.. this whole separation between them was unwarranted, unqualified, as they were meant to be together not apart..he sucked his lower lip into his mouth and wiped his brow ,as he shook his head for clearance ,to remind himself that had it not been for their vocation they would have been married. He startled and sat up on his bed , marriage ,what a definite ! no going back perpetual contract ! bind! it sounded. He wiped his brow and his shoulders unconsciously slouched, yes marriage meant, to take on responsibility not only for yourself but for the other person wedded to you..his phone suddenly rang and he stretched his arm to reach out for it ,he smiled it was his beloved AS, he held the phone to his ear and closed his eyes, "jee AS, kaise hain ap? sab theekh hai na? he queried,"phela nehi theekh tha Dutta ,maagar ab Naku na sab kuch theekh ker diya hai",Dutta smiled but creased his brow a tiny bit, "main samjha nehi,AS ?he enquired, "woh baat ye hai Dutta , Naku ko is baat ka pata tha ke tune army choorne ka zikar hum se phela kiya tha , or use ye bhi paata tha ,ke hum ne thujhe kaha hai ke Naku ka haq banta hai is baat ko janne ka, woh Dutta hum ne he Baji se kaha ke woh thujhe samjhia, kyon ke tu us ke baat suneta hai...Dutta dekh le aj phir use ne ye baat dekha de hai ke us am se lardki mein kuch na kuch tu hai..bas hum ye he chata hain thujhse ke tu hamesha us ka khayal rekha , lagate hai Bappa ne use is duniya main sirf tere liya he behja hai...aur akhari baat ye ke ham kush hain tune ap farz yaad rekha, bas ab tu yehi prathena hai Jagdammbe se ke tumhara lagan jaldi ho jayea".. she expressed, Dutta stood at ease, but speechless most of the time, who was he to refute his mother he thought as he squared his shoulders, and folded one arm to his abs and looked at his polished nails, "jee AS, maine apna faisla badal diya hai ,isleya ab ap itmanan se so jayen ,mein bhi aram kerta hon sabah duty pe jana hai"...and the call ended.
Dutta walked, completely bare chest in his white pyjama bottoms towards his divan bed, he flung over the light khaki coloured quilt and dived into his bed sprawling his long taut legs under the covering , his toes curled and uncurled as he rolled over to his right side and shoved his hand under one of his pillows and slowly pulled out her chunni and bunched its corner near his mouth and nose ,"aaahhh"! he went as his body relaxed with her fragrance , my baaby , my darling .my love you,my everything...yet again massacred Dutta with your looks , your thoughts and your company..he showered one end of the chunni near his nose and mouth with little kisses and gradually pulled the rest of it from underneath the pillow and entwined it between his legs..mhhh he uttered sounds of blissful delight ,such was the feeling that overtook him the moment he even thought about her. He subsided his notes of joy ,as he was reminded of his image, her perception of him , a man who only lusted for her, he squeezed her chunni on his hairy chest and almost uttered a guttural chuckle as he thought he would give anything to see her face if he told her in person.. "yes baaaby I lust for you!..his belly wobbled a bit as he chuckled she would lapse into her , ye, woh, main's and of course Saaab! ... but he closed his eyes and shot his neck forward to place his full warm lips against her chunni, he thought what a rare ,extraordinary woman , she is, she never made a song and dance about the fact that he confided in his mother first and not her, so now he knows that she knew everything , but she used her good sense by not drawing a comparison between herself and AS, she accepted it in a stride that her Saab in the first instance wanted his mother, and now he commended her even more..it seemed to him that in choosing a life partner he has made the accurate choice...he hugged her chunni close to his chest and cried... baaaby I love you so much...he reached for his phone, and she picked up her phone.. his white kurta's arms around her neck. "Hmm Saab ,kya hai ap ko ,sune bhi nehi deta ho ap apne Naku ko ..hooon" she moaned, he propped up on his elbow ,"oye badtameez, aurat, kiya hai thujhe tera Saab abhi jaga hoya hai to tu kadher suna ko chaal parehe hai ,chaal dil behla mera" ,he demanded, "hooh, Saab main kaise ap ka dil bhalaoon? Mujhe sharam ati hai , she whispered, "hain? challo aurat! jab tu mera saath hoti hai tab teri sharam kahan hoti hai? he teased and she retorted ," mere me tu sharam rethe hai Saab magar ap beesharam zaroor ho jata ho," as she flopped his kurta sleeves on her face, he receded a bit and transformed his tone from tease to tenderness, "hummh Naku, thuje ye kehana tha ke main thujhe se payar karta hoon, aur ye phoochna tha ..will you marry me baaby? will you be mine forever?" Naku sat up in her bed and held up his kurta in front of her and then put its sleeves once more around her slender neck and slowly sank back on her pillow with his kurta lying on top of her ,she closed her eyes as his words descended into her soul, but felt it elevated, tears welled up in her eyes "Saab your Naku too loves you till eternity and beyond if there is such a timeless zone ,and yes Saab ,ap ke saath lagan ke khawab, main bhi dekhti hoon" ..she replied shyly, he moved his head to one side and lowered his eyes and stared at her chunni ,he stroked it with his thumb ,he parted his lips and acknowledged, "Naku, the idea to marry you, make you my lawful wedded wife, has to be one decision where I can safely say quite simply "I made the right choice ,and she replied "so did I Saab for Bappa knows we are made for each other"!..both smiled at the cliched phrases they were using to woo each other, or was this just a way of filling the gaps in their lives till they are one, before the presence of their deities ,their families and the decree of the land. The silence hung between them, and Dutta moved his large frame and crashed on her chunni and as he lay on it, his mouth still on the phone, he groaned drowsily "oye sau gaye hai?" , he heard a moan and he whispered "!nite nite baaaby love you soo much".. and he ended the call and flopped his head on her chunni closed his eyes and went to sleep on his belly ,her chunni flattened under him...

Dutta stood before the mirror clad in his uniform he brushed his hair in place ,lightly combed his neat contoured stubble and narrowed his eyes , slapped his cologne on his cheeks, strapped his large dial wrist watch ,reached for is beret and placed it in a neat formal slant on his head. He picked up his mobile and slipped it in one of his breast pockets ,smoothed his combat top on his broad muscular chest and spread his fingers to hold his leather brief case. He walked out of his apartment and heeled down his thick black above the ankle lace up boots. He carried his brief case in the slight curve of his slender hand and strong broad wrist, he smiled complacently as he felt no longer weighed down by the cumbersome problem of his continuing in his career quandary..he realized, the idiocy of his thought! for had he forgotten, that the army had certain regulations regarding an officers exit. He stroked his beard in sheer dismay at his inaptness, but continued his decisive semi march towards the combined core teaching auditorium... he certainly needed the impetus from her, the pep talk that cleared out the cobwebs in his brain...had that not occurred ,this lecture that he was about to deliver to the trainee officers from the, Armoured,Artillery, and the Infantry Cores would have been words without conviction..now well yes!! ..he had gone astray slightly ,but she gave him direction..

Dutta entered the fairly newly constructed combined teaching annexe. He entered through the side doors into the dimmer controlled spot lighted low acoustic ceiling amphitheatre style auditorium. He headed straight towards the slab of the raised platform , and placed his brief case on the table and stood to attention to face and returned with the salute and the united click of heels, with an undefined valour that ran across his countenance as his eyes scored the smartly turned out rows of officers in complete uniform with core bands, pips and colours standing erect in the auditorium. Even from the distance from where he stood below on the plarform stage, he raised his narrowed, and eyes scaled their complete focus. He bopped his head and indicated the stand at ease order to them and raised his palm up in the air towards them to be seated. Dutta walked methodically towards the centre of the stage and in a raised voice that carried across with ease he spoke, with his brawny arms bent and his slender hands pointed towards them, "good morning officers , I am Major Dutta Patil , tutor Infantry Core , and, he briefly noted his class square up their shoulders in pride ,he lowered his eyes and then instantly raised them to continue, "Leadership is a complex activity that can be defined in many ways. However, officers at heart it is about a leader's ability to shape the thoughts and actions of those they lead. Leaders who understand why people think, feel and behave the way they do are better able to accomplish that.
Hence today we will be studying the topic of Communication and Applied Behavioural Science ,this is designed to provide OUTs, with useful insights and practical techniques that will help in that regard - insights into what motivates people and how teams work, techniques to improve problem-solving skills, ways of communicating more effectively, and techniques that can help a young Officer to help soldiers deal with change and to counsel them where there are personal or welfare issues that affect their work, Dutta introduced, "you officers will be reflecting on four core themes; motivating and team building; communicating and influencing; problem solving and creative thinking; and leading and managing change. Now the bulk of the study is experiential, as you have learnt during training so far ,that is learn by doing , but now officers you are to be also exposed to ideas such as transformational, situational and traits approaches to leadership with a view to encouraging them to use the opportunity to think explicitly about leadership - what it is? how it can be developed? and how it can be managed?" Dutta explained, with a firm face.
He walked across to the huge white board and held his big bold black marker, and resumed speaking accompanied by scrawling when required, he wrote in bold An officer and a problem solver;" so let's look at his first segment, a conflict follows a natural cycle of adaptation and response ,but its evolution is neither linear nor constant..we need to adapt to current demands of operations, types of operations..insurgencies, so really officers! it's the mind set towards adversaries that we need to focus on, adversaries who aim to exploit our weaknesses using a variety of high ended and low ended asymmetric techniques..which then questions what is irregular and regular military activity? ..so really the " conflict paradigm" has shifted and we must adapt our approaches if we are to succeed. So I want to make it clear just how important problem solving and decision making skills are at every level of leadership. Officers are commissioned to face and solve problems that will be in the best interests of their soldiers and nation. Now officers, some of these decisions will be routine and the solution apparently obvious. But all will require , the choice of action!, remembering of course ,that choosing to take "no action"is a decision too" reiterated,Dutta as he turned his tall stout body from the bord to face the officers.
He continued, "so let us then let us glance through some of the pointers for better decision making.. he scrawled as he lectured, officers the best problem solvers are aware of the process of problem solving , that of the intuitive and effortful processes that help them to iron out the creases aspect of their thinking and to chose the best strategy for the problem at hand", he paused and looked at his class, "to know when to work intuitively and when to stop and grind through the issue. Next problem solvers review upon their decisions, their analysis of what went well and why ,helps to inform and develop their approach. Furthermore , problem solvers, they work on educating their intuition, they don't simply allow their experience to be translated into "intuitive" competence, as they actively engage in the process, explained Dutta, "they work to develop their emotional intelligence ,by which is meant their ability to understand why we understand why we have chosen a particular course of action, this is key element of handling the stress that can accompany problem solving" lectured Dutta as he raised his fore finger to drive home his point, "further more officers' problem solvers are students of human psychology, in the broadest sense". He reeled around from the board to face his officers "now given that all decision we make involve people in some way it makes sense to understand them as best as possible and not just to rely on our intuitions..remember officers!, that one person's "common sense"can be another's prejudice". He continued, "next the most creative and innovative thinkers relish ambiguity , the "shades of grey in a problem", now problem solvers have worked to develop their power of statistical reasoning, they will often have to work with technical information that is complete or ambiguious, for example officers, you are told a new weapon system is 10%percent better than the old weapon system or that there is a 25% chance of rain tomorrow! without a sound grasp of statistical thinking with which to interrogate these claims, your judgment might be one of faith rather than reason! but problem solvers ensure that they excercise, sleep and eat well, well nourished and well rested brain is considerably more effective than a than a tried one", Dutta confirmed with a warning nod, his own pupils smiled in the knowledge of his views about these issues, he noted their roll of the eyes ,smiled and looked the oher way ,and faced his officers again..
Dutta paused to take question, and his eyes roamed across the auditorium and to his pleasure he took on board that most of his pupils were alert and a couple of them had raised their palms to fire questions..he nodded towards Bhatnager with a tiny smile and twinkle of the eye, "Sir can you tell us about the nature of problems" ,she enquired. He blinked his eyes and walked towards the podium, and spoke "now according to research, officers! there are four main problems types, simplistic, deterministic, random, and indeterminate.. ..he walked towards the large board and scrawled in bold "you have first, the Simplistic problem; meaning where there is one and only one answer ,for example who is the chief of the defence staff? Secondly , where the answer is arrived at by the application of a formula, algorithm or protocol, for example , the circumference of a circle is found is found applying a certain formula. Officers, in military context a solution of problem a SOP is such a formula.. we carry out certain tasks according to Sop..." he scratched the side of his stubble cheek, "ok now here you have the third problem ..the Random problem, where there is only one answer, but there are a number of possible correct answers ,for example, who will win this intake's sword of honour?., he stretched his shoulders and scrawled on the white board and the final type of problem officers is the indeterminate problem, where the answer is complex , hard to identify or changes in time, for example what is "success" in a particular military operation?" he paused and spread his palms, and continued "now answering such a question means taking into account a huge range of factors including how others see the issue , how the issue has changed and how your earlier decisions and actions have themselves affected the issue..." he looked at his officers and continued facing them, "now when faced with the problem it is useful to categorise and ask ,"what kind of a problem is this?",once identified we can apply the most appropriate problem solving process, for example officers there is no discussion about how to carry out orders given ,you simply follow the solution of the problem! ,he paused and looked at his officers, and opened his mouth and continued, "however random problems entail both facts and judgement, so to return to the question of the sword of honour question winner, although it is possible that any senior term officer will win, pertinent evidence from performance ,and reports etc, enables us to narrow the field down considerably". Dutta, further elucidated "right! in dealing with indeterminate problems ,facts are likely to be rejected or contested by the various stake holders making their use of little value or ,worse , counterproductive , particularly when those facts are culturally derived". Dutta continued "of course in the complex real world we inhabit ,the problem we are faced with will ,in all likelihood ,be a combination of several problems and a helpful first step can be to unravel the separate problems and identify the kind of problem they are. This can be useful as we begin to solve them, for example simple and deterministic problems can be easily delegated! leaving you with more time to dedicate to indeterminate problems..."he concluded.. finally he straightened up and declared, "that'll be all for this session officers, the next session will continue on focussing on dealing with psycho-social factors, sifting through and weighing up evidence, creative thinking and we will wind up the topic with decision making tools ,explained Dutta ,and raised his hand and announced , "session closed officers" ,all stood ,clicked heels and saluted ,as Dutta walked across the stage, grabbed his leather brief case and bounced down the side steps of the stage and walked with upright body towards the exit of the auditorium...to be continued~ Hamlet53..6.4.12
Precap: "this then was your last formalized tutorial, from now on time will be spent in preparation of formal assessments and handing in course work..."clarified Dutta.
