Quick Take: Rauf lala

After the initial jubilation, the new Hasi ka Shehensha is humbled by the Indian experience. Rauf Lala shares his experiences after winning the event.

What was your first reaction when you stepped into India?
I came from Karachi and on landing in Mumbai I felt that I had entered Karachi only. I was reminded of the same lifestyle, fast paced life and the concrete jungle! I had travelled across the globe for my performances but had not been to India before. So I felt a mysterious immediate connection with the people.

How easy or difficult was it for you to do comedy in front of an Indian audience?
I was very happy to be performing in front of an Indian audience. This is something that I had always wanted to do. So I just doubled the effort and it has paid off because the Indian audience has been very warm. Not once did I feel out of place or uncomfortable.

What were your feelings during the final moments of the show?
I was stunned and didn't know how to react or what action is appropriate at that time! I had tears in my eyes and I just bowed my head in salutation. I was too numb to react! If you see the video, you will notice that it took a long time to sink in. When I informed my wife over the phone, she was shocked and just kept weeping. So much so that I had to cut the phone as it was an ISD call. My children have prepared posters for me so that once I go to Pakistan they will welcome me with style.

How did you come up with the final gag that won you the title?
My favourite joke was: "Once Tarzan was walking through the jungle when he saw a dead cheetah. He clasped his hands in glee and said , Great. I just got a new underwear!" I rehearsed quite hard for the finals and finally my efforts paid off.
