Gay prince out of closet, loses inheritance

Fri Jul 7, 2006 9:14am ET

By Krittivas Mukherjee MUMBAI (Reuters) - An Indian prince has been disowned by his family after he publicly announced he was gay in a country where homosexuality is outlawed by a 145-year-old law. Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, who belongs to one of the country's richest royal families that ruled the former Rajpipla principality in the western state of Gujarat, has been disowned for "activities unacceptable to the society," one disinheritance notice placed by his parents in a newspaper said.

Last month, his parents issued notices in a Gujarati language daily withdrawing his right to the family property.

"Henceforth, no one must refer to my name as mother of Manvendra," one notice signed by his mother said. "If any individual or organization dares to do so, it will invite contempt proceedings." But Gohil, 40, who announced he was gay this year, says he has found happiness among Gujarat's gay community and is not interested in his inheritance. "I could not have lived a lie forever," he told Reuters on Friday. "I will not stake my claim to the property. I have found a family in the (gay) community and am happy working for the community," said Gohil, who runs an NGO working on HIV/AIDS among homosexuals.

"As an activist, I thought it right to come out of the closet first. Otherwise, it would have been living a lie."

Homosexuality is banned in India and punishable by up to 10 years in jail, but gay activists are trying to lift the veil of secrecy over the community in a country where public hugging or kissing even among heterosexuals invites angry stares, lewd comments and even beatings. Gay support groups say the anti-homosexuality law -- framed by British colonial rulers in 1861 -- must be scrapped for an effective fight against HIV/AIDS because many homosexuals refuse to come out in the open fearing harassment by authorities. UNAIDS says there are an estimated 5.7 million Indians living with HIV, many of them homosexuals.

India abolished princely kingdoms after independence from Britain in 1947, but many royal families continue to lead lavish lives in sprawling palaces.

I know we have debated gay marraige and gay people before, but do you think his parents should have disowned him and taken away his inheritance? Plz reply!

wow!!

If you look at previously discussed debate about Gay/Homosexual I donot support their legal marriage. However, I do respect them as individual and human. I think they are most harsh parents. I cannot believe her mother's statement in public newspaper. I think Gohil needs a pat on his shoulder..he is definetly brave, i am proud of his decision to leave his family, declare him being what he is rather than living a life which he did not wanted to live. Not many people have courage to do this...I know, I don't 👏

First of all it is 2006. Noone is a prince in India anymore. I think it is about time for these Royal 🤬 highnesses to come to terms with the fact that they wear their pants one leg at a time and they are ordinary citizens like the rest of us!

Anywhere in the world the gay/lesbians are look down upon. One can be gay/lesbian by birth or by choice. We should understand the emotional state of the one who is homosexual by birth, treat him/her normally. But the one who is by choice or for pleasure should not be encouraged, as it's against nature's law.

in today's day and age how can you disown u child because he or she is a gay or an lesbian...i mean some people prefer the same sex, that is their decision and i respect their choices, but how can a parent be impartial or predujdiced to ur own child...i find that disgusting

Legally, I believe that gay marriage should be legalized. Not doing so is simply one way for society to suppress another group of people.

However, this matter is personal and between the family, in this case it is their decision, and the government must not interfere with private matters.

Prarara, donot agree here. we should not make it legal for people who take it by choice. We should not encourage what is wrong. By allowing them getting married and raise kids (imagine the kid who has same sex parents 🤢 ) we are encouraging numbers to increase. It should be discouraged.

i dont agree with the parent's decision on disowning their son just because its wrong to them. Then again who are we to decide what is wrong and what is right? It is a personal judgement for everyone about what is wrong and what is right, but for me, Gay marraige is unheard of, but not abnormal. Marraige only gives people certain tax benifits, so why shouldnt it be given it to them? It doesnt change their sexual or normal relationship with each other. In fact i think by giving them the right to marry it might discourage people from doing it, because here in america everything that is illegal is considered cool and a trend.
I agree that some people turn gay b/c they are influenced because it seems cool at the time, but then if everyone accepts it, there would be nothing appealing about it to those who are not truly gay.

So why is it wrong? Can you prove beyond all reasonable doubt that homosexuality is wrong? Is there a right-o-meter that will prove this?
