It has been a long while since Hindi cinema had an iconic villain like Gabbar or Mogambo. Surprisingly, the hitman in Sujoy Ghosh's latest film is finding unprecedented popularity, with plans to make him a comic book character

Bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee has suddenly become the talk of the town, thanks to his appearance as Bob Biswas, the hitman in the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani. No doubt Kahaani belongs to 'Bidda Bagchi', but the insurance agent-cum-hitman has caught the imagination of so many film buffs that the makers are planning to launch a comic book centered on Bob Biswas.

There are many fan-pages for Biswas on the Internet and some enthusiasts have created fan-art dedicated to him as well. In a recent interview Chatterjee said, "I hadn't expected that a cold-blooded killer could have become so popular. I have played negative characters earlier too, but none have brought me this sort of recognition."

Surprisingly, there is not much that Bob Biswas does in the film. He just walks up to his victims, greets them and shoots them dead, point blank. He is being talked about more than the other leading characters of the film – played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Parambrata Chatterjee. Wethinks director Sujoy Ghosh would be a happy man for having been able to create an iconic villain after so long.

Another article on Saswata chatterjee

Bob Biswas: I even scared my wife

Remember that sales man who tried to sell you a vacuum cleaner on Sunday? He knocked. You opened the door and chatted briefly. He tried to sell you something. You said 'No.' He walked away.

It happens every other day. You meet strangers, you talk, you exchange pleasantries… say Nomoshkar and get on with life.

But if you watched Kahaani, then you'll think twice before doing something as trivial as opening a door or a window to a stranger especially if he is an innocent-looking bangali babu, with big-black spectacles and an even bigger paunch.

Everyone's talking about Bob Biswas — the silent killer whoseNomoshkar now gives us goose bumps. With almost 11, 000 'likes' on his Facebook page which started not even a month back, Biswas has made the nation go berserk about him and forget Bidda Bagchi. And
there's more —A graphic novel is also being planned based on the hitman character

The character is played by Saswata Chatterjee, a famous Bengali actor whose success was limited to Bengal till Kahaani happened. From being the Topshe in Feluda, the greedy Bhai-Da in Bong Connection, the psychiatrist in disguise Anupam Ghatak in Rang Milanti to the doctor who gave up his career to start a travel agency in Chalo Let's Go, Chatterjee has always been a favourite for Bengalis.

But Kahaani gave the 42-year-old a big leap and grand success which he was 'hardly expecting,' he admits. "I gave my best, like I do for all movies. Definitely wasn't expecting Bob to be such a huge hit."

"The response has been overwhelming," he says.

But the biggest compliment? The actor says it was from singer Usha Uthup.

"The day Kaahani released, Usha di called from Cochin and said, Darling, I never knew you could be so mean."

His wife Mahua was also terrified while watching the movie in the theatre.

"When Bob killed a character in the movie, Mahua was so scared she jumped on her seat and held my hand tight. So I quietly whispered to her, 'Bob is sitting right beside you'. It was a great thrill."

He certainly deserves all the accolades 👏 Never heard of this actor before Kahaani happened .
There is a new article out on sify which says

How Bob Biswas outshot Agent Vinod!😆

In the end, these will emerge as the cinematic mysteries of 2012.

How an LIC agent-cum-hitman, Bob Biswas, from Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani - with barely five minutes of screen presence - instantly entered cinema folklore and made more impact on viewers than a suave 'Indian' James Bond, Agent Vinod - with a full 152 of the 157 minutes of screen time dedicated to no one but him.
