Interview : Kareena changing career lanes with 'Omkara'

You've loved Kareena as the gorgeous, stunning women with oodles of sex appeal. But for 'Omkara' you'll see a different side of her that you had never seen before. One thing still remains the same, she mesmerizes you with her beauty and talent. Kareena is having a good year so far, with '36 China Town' reaching for the hit mark and 'Chup Chup Ke' earning her accolades. Her next Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Omkara' calls for the trumps. Expectations are sky high from the film and Kareena is keeping her fingers crossed.

Excerpts from an interview:

Are you waiting eagerly for 'Omkara'?

I cannot put down how anxious I'm about the film. This film brings out a new side of me in both look and appeal and I'm waiting to see how people will respond to it. For the role I've undergone a complete makeover. It's like a reincarnation for me in my career.

It's your second serious film after Govind Nihalani's 'Dev'.

That is one film I look up to. But not many people have watched the film and it went unnoticed in that regard. Long time has passed in between and I believe audience is keener to experiment now and so they should willingly come forward and watch this film.

How was it working in Omkara?

We were all well versed about what we were supposed to do. The full cast and crew knew what they were doing. Saif came full prepared as he plays the role of Langda Tyagi and he needed to work on his mannerisms to suit the character. Both of us have a few scenes together. This is the second time we work after LOC. I'm paired opposite Ajay Devgan in the film and most of my scenes in the film are with him. There was always the thought that we are rendering Shakespeare's play on screen. Vishal also took care to make us go through a couple of workshops. I loved working with him and I'm looking forward to work in all his films. He and I have formed a mutual admiration society.

How well prepared were you for the film?

I'm bit different in that regard, I never prepare for the role that I do. But for Omkara I was very focused. I focused on my character all the time and this is something that I had never done before. The role was challenging but I didn't have anxiety in my mind.

Any special bonding on the sets of Omkara?

Yes I got along very well with Konkona, she is such a lovely girl. Even though the shooting is over we are still in touch. She is such a brilliant actress but she has no hang ups. She is very spontaneous in her shots.

What kind of roles have you decided to do from here?

Only those kinds of role that challenge me. I've decided to bid adieu to run of the mills films even though it means parting from a big project. 'Omkara' is one such platform that gives me scope to explore myself as an actress. That doesn't mean that I would concentrate in doing offbeat or realistic films, but anything that has the potential. I would prefer playing with my niece Samaira than doing average roles. Even if I've to wait for a year for a role of my choice, I'm ready for it. I strive to do something unexpected at this stage of my career. I want to go with the trend, accept the change in the industry and adapt to audiences' changing tastes. I'm maturing and my decisions are also getting serious. Being a style icon is not easy and I've to work out continuously to be in shape. People think I'm an icon because I'm ambitious, confident and an achiever.

Are we going to miss you for long after Omkara, as you're not signing films?

That shouldn't be the case. My next release will be Farhan Akhtar's Don even though I'm doing a small role there. It was fun doing Helen Aunty's song but it's impossible to match up with her. Also I'm going through some scripts now.

but in these "simplicity" roles
