One of the most awaited lovemaking scenes on Indian television may have turned out to be a few blink-and-miss moments of action, but it still goes to show that the soap scene in India is finally coming of age. As millions sat glued to watch
actors Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar have their suhaag raat on Bade Achhe Lagte Hain's Monday night episode, the two made love in a candlelit room with a mushy Bollywood track in the background. Though most scenes were suggestive and a lot was left to viewers' imagination, the half-hour episode was all about getting close, taking off clothes and steamy romance. Almost instantly, the show started trending on Twitter and TRPs soared. "We wanted to be true to the story. We made sure the scene was tastefully shot," says producer Ekta Kapoor. Before this, only reality shows have aired explicit content. In another soap titled Amrit Manthan, the lead protagonist will, this week, seduce the lead male character in a steamy scene. "The story demands it," says producer Rajan Shahi. Other recent explicit scenes in soaps include a husband forcing anal sex on his wife in Saubhagyavati Bhava and newlyweds at lovemaking in Tum Dena Saath Mera.
Viewers are also enjoying the change, and no one's complaining. "We received just two-three complaints, but nothing significant," says Naresh Chahal, secretary, Broadcasting Content Complaints Council, Indian Broadcasting Foundation.
