No more puppy love, romance matures on telly
A still from Kuch Toh Log Kahenge

The girl-meets-boy story is passe on the Indian small screen. The experimentation with mature themes like remarriage and middle age love is evident in shows like " Punar Vivah", " Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha" and " Bade Acche Lagte Hain".

Kamlesh Pandey, who wrote "Kuch Toh Log Kahenge", inspired by the Pakistani play "Dhoop Kinare", says, "On the small screen you have the freedom to be experimental, intelligent and different."

"I feel now some channel heads are ready to treat their audiences to different content. As we say in advertising, 'the audience is not a moron, she is your wife.' You cannot take the audience for granted and people should realise that soon," Pandey told IANS.

After well received shows "Bade Achche Lagte Hain", the romantic journey of a 40- plus guy and a 30-plus woman, and "Kuch Toh Log Kahenge", the Indian version of "Dhoop Kinare", Sony channel went a step further with "Kya Hua Tera Vaada" to show how a married couple revive love in their relationship. And viewers are relating well to the plotline.

The makers of Star Plus' show "Maryada" took the first bold step by introducing a gay angle in their script and now the story has taken another interesting turn with the focus on an "age bar in love". In the show, single lawyer Subhankar has fallen in love with his client, the much older Devyani, who is married and has three grown up children.

Even today, the concept of remarriage is not acceptable in our society and Colors' newly launched show has picked it up as the theme for its latest show "Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha". Zee TV too is treading the same path with "Punar Vivah".

While "Na Bole Tum..." is the story of a widow with two children and a journalist, "Punar Vivah" is a mature and progressive show that sensitively captures the journey of a man and a woman who, despite having faced a debacle in their first marriages, are giving life a second chance.

Life OK's "Hum Ne Li Hai...Shapath" is also likely to witness a mature love track with the main character Abhigyan, played by Piyush Sachdev, falling in love with an older woman.

Director Ravindra Gautam, currently working on "Kya Hua Tera Vaada", feels TV allows a vast canvas to experiment and being a mass medium it can make deep inroads into Indian society.

"The face of television is changing every two to three years. People who were producing saas-bahu sagas are now attempting different concepts, so that people don't get bored," Gautam said.

"Right now there is just very little experimentation happening on the small screen; television has a lot more potential. Television is a mass medium and is making the deepest inroads into Indian society. These shows give an insight into that," he added.

Gautam has also been involved in the making of "Bade Acche..."

Asitkumarr Modi, director of "Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma", admits this is the right time to offer the audiences something different as they are hungry for fresh concepts.

"People are eagerly waiting for new kind of love stories. The audience is hungry for new stories and we should serve them with what they want," said Modi.

At the end of the day, success matters, says Purnendu Shekhar, writer of the popular show " Balika Vadhu".

"These concepts have started working on TV and hence have become a trend. This is a cycle that happens every five years when newer concepts come," Shekhar said.

"These concepts represent our society in a big way. We started with a rural set-up and a lot of channels followed. It is good to see that TV is getting realistic with time," he added.

This article I just wanted to share, It has nothing to do with Bidaai, rather more to say about Mature romance,

I felt the leap in Bidaaii was extremely beautiful , true to the facts that they showed some mature feelings coming from two individuals Anmol and Ragini, who were wedded for 7 years due to many reason which was mainly compromise, Love in a relationship is very important but the way one feels for the other in a realistic way and understanding and depth in what one can see in the other interms of feelings which can vary in different forms was shown beautifully between the two individuals Anmol and Ragini

The seeds of such relationship was sown in with the leap Bidaaii showed, Many shows during that time depicted that and now a days shows are catering to such mature romance, Still felt wished they have shown a lot ore with Anmol and Ragini as the actors (Apurva and Parul)made this couple extremely beautiful with their subtle romance 👏

Thanks for sharing and reading it definitely anmol-ragini came in my mind..
They are a great example of such romance..their pure subtle romance was tooo beautiful..
Two strangers how they became friends..became the support of each other with time.in every ups and downs understanding growing day by day to love blossoming between them..thats was the beauty of anmol-ragini relationship and definitely it was not the puppy love ..
The trend of this kind of mature romance surely working with the mass..we were lucky to have witnessed such a love story with angini in bidaai leap and apu-parul were just outstanding ...must say they did set a new trend...

shanti the mature romance was magical but one thing more the second chances in love..ragini got someone as precious as anmol to take the darkness out of her life and brighten it with his unconditional love..
so many shows are having such concept about second chance in love..no puppy love but how the relationship develops with time to finally love finding a way.
Well apu did set a trend as precious anmol and so many actors following his steps..

I know Saveeta , Shows which are catering to remarriage or second time love I want to see what depth they show, We did miss out the 7 year void they showed in Bidaai but the leap if a viewer analyzes it its like the first year of the way life moves on and how second time love second chances in love .. Anmol was extremely patient with Ragini and he understood her more than anyone else could do inspite of teh less talks they had, His character was so well sketched out that he could analyze the way her thoughst dwelled..

The way they showed this couple is extremely good and yes they made the start to such kinda stories.. I am yet to see of anyone can come close to such dimesions

Yes the remarriage factor was well shown in Bidaaii, and more so its about the depth in which an individual can share happiness and sorrow and understanding when a couple goes through due to circumstances,

They may not pin point it as the shows mentioned are mostly seen in 2011 while Bidaaii got over in Nov 2010, the factors start due to some changes shown on television and shown how they can be brought into limelight in different angles , and according to me Anmol and Ragini are the biggest example of this..

Infact Kudos to Anmol to being one of the best husband in Indian Television who would show all dimensions of what a women would see in her ideal man the character has the depth and integrity which a male protagonist who plays a husband and a father and a son could show

Thanks for posting the article shanti.

Well written comments shanti ,saveeta.👍🏼

Who else can we say other than anmol ragini as the best example of matured and beautiful romance.❤️

we don't need any lovey dovey romance to keep glued to their love story ,just a heart touching story and wonderful performances of the actors is enough.👍🏼

Destiny brought anmol and ragini together but their pure love especially anmol , what a character he is , can't see any heart touching husband character like anmol in any show.❤️

Just his unconditional love for his wife ragini and the patience he had to get her love was simply amazing.❤️His true love moved ragini and slowly she too fell in love with him.their each and every scene we can't say a romantic one but their eyelocks ,expressions just looked beautiful.❤️

And angini's each scene is always a memorable one , which we can't forget at all.❤️

For me angini is the best example for a matured love .👏👏👏

Yes Di.. Even I loved the way the showed second chances re marriage in Bidaaii for Ragini to see a new horizon with Anmol
The way they showed romance or maybe more of understanding and seeking new love between Anmol and Ragini was remarkable

Now many shows are shwing second marriage, In Zee Tv shows and where the main prtaganist like the male or female lead loosing their first husband or wife and they get remarried due to circumstances

No doubt its from the Leap in Bidaaii it started and the way they showed Mature understanding between Anmol and Ragini is very nice

Anmol was the husband whom Ragini could again seek her happiness, He was always willing to do anything for her..

Wished they had continued a little more. I always feel that Bidaaii had shown so much depth in the characters played they deserved the extension and more so because Angini as a couple had a lot to explore..

Telly romance matured and re marriage shown was very much due to Bidaaii leap which was so good in these aspects

Nicely said Krithika, Moreover I think the characters made the storyline more beleiveable intersm of seeing love which has different dimensions over a period of time , You mature with time and understanding plays a very important role in such individuals,
ALso for Ragini its a second marriage but then we also saw that how she could see what a wonderful man she got as a husband and second chances in seeing life in a new way with new dimesnions and happiness prevails again..

Yes such angles are given importance now and Anmol and Ragini's story sets the biggest example 👏👏
