Priyanka's debut album sounds mind blowing: Sajid Ali
Director Sajid Khan, who is proudly showcasing his upcoming film Housefull 2: The Dirty Dozen these days, is confident about the music scored by his college friends and now colleagues – acclaimed music director duo Sajid-Wajid Ali.
In an exclusive conversation, the trio—Sajid Khan, Sajid Ali and Wajid Ali—talk about their college days, working together on their first official project Housefull 2 and even Priyanka Chopra.
Sajid, how was it working on Housefull 2 with music director duo Sajid-Wajid?
Sajid Khan (SK): The first time that we worked together was during college sometime in 1988 or 1989. It was on stage when they were giving the music and I was dancing.
Sajid Ali (Sajid): He used to be the "award snatcher" in college. He was a DJ, a dancer, and a mimicry artist. I think I have forgotten some more of his talents!
SK: And Sajid Ali used to date girls claiming to be Sajid Khan because I was a DJ (laughs). On a serious note, working with Sajid-Wajid has been an absolute pleasure because of our comfort level. After recording and listening to the first track for Housefull 2, I immediately signed them on for my next film that is scheduled to begin in August-September (2012).
Sajid, you were a dancer! Your sister Farah Khan is a brilliant choreographer. Why didn't you start dancing more?
SK: I realized there wasn't much money in dancing. I had danced in a couple of films like Aag Se Khelenge. But back then you couldn't run a home by just dancing, so I started doing a lot of other things.
Sajid, how involved have you been in the making of the music for Housefull 2?
SK: When you hire an A-grade professional like say Farah Khan for choreographing songs, you can't tell her what to do. She will tell you what kind of steps suit a particular song, because she's an expert in her field. Similarly, when I teamed up with Sajid-Wajid, we discussed the brief. There was no question of teaching them their job. But ultimately, hardcore talented professionals like them give you their ideas also and then you select and choose.
The specialty of Sajid-Wajid is that for one song, they bring with them five different arrangements (dhuns) which is an extremely rare thing and that is the right way to work. In case you don't like those five, the next day they'll come back with five more. That's how talented they are!
The truth is that in Hindi films, music is like a second hero. If your film is really good but the music is vulgar, chances are that your film will not work as much as it could have if it had good music. I think music had a big hand in making Dabangg such a huge success.
Housefull would not have not been such a big hit hadn't it been for the music. Tees Maar Khan managed to save face because of 'Sheila Ki Jawani'. So, music is a very important factor. Quite honestly, I am proud to say that I have made three films and the music of Housefull 2 is my most favorite music up to date.
Sajid, are you somebody who's very strict on the sets?
SK: Not really. But sometimes, we are bound to be that way. The nature of filmmaking is not just doing what you want to do with the actors but its getting the actors from the vanity vans to the set. Also in today's date, filmmaking is a very expensive process and you won't believe it but Housefull 2 is one of the most expensive films ever made. And I have completed it in 70 days.
Sajid, what according to you is the most important – the script, the cast or just the ensemble on the set?
SK: No, I feel at the end of the day the script is most important. I can say this on record that no star makes a movie work, movies make stars work. Stars take an opening on Friday, Saturday and Sunday after which it's the film that works.
Sajid-Wajid, amongst the leading female singers, who fits your composition best?
Sajid: It depends on the composition. But, I personally like Sunidhi Chauhan a lot. She's like a younger sister to me. She's such a versatile singer that she makes the composition her own. Sometimes she brings out nuances that even we mustn't have thought of. I also love Shreya Ghoshal's sincerity. She's brilliant!
Sajid-Wajid, according to you, which Bollywood personality amongst Priyanka, Farhan Aamir and Mr Bachchan is best at singing?
Sajid: The other day I heard Priyanka Chopra's song from her upcoming debut album. I think it sounds mind blowing! You can't imagine the way she's sung it and she's working very hard on her album. I think what I've heard is the best.
Wajid: I'm a big time fan of Amitji. Priyanka's songs haven't become hits yet, while Amitji's songs are great hits already!
