Deepika talks about Cocktail

Seen as the next big thing in the film industry, Deepika Padukone, 26, has a busy year ahead as seen in the public tussle over her availability for shoots. Cocktail (it's a working title so I don't want to call it that she clarifies) with Saif Ali Khan is almost over but three films will go on floors in quick succession this year. She herself is unruffled because 'when you are passionate you make it happen.'

Q. What is the story around you and Race 2?
A. I am doing the film and we need to figure out the dates. A lot of things have been said but that is because a certain reporting happens without getting facts right. Ramesh (Taurani) was a little nervous and that was made out to be something else.

Q. Did you also have issues with dates for Rana opposite Rajnikanth?
A. The makers themselves have delayed the film and we are making a prequel instead - Kochadaiyaan. Rana required a lot and was physically demanding. Rajnikanth was unwell last year and the doctors have also told him to take it easy so Rana will happen later.

Q. What's the most challenging role you are doing this year?
A. My role in Cocktail is something I have never done before or thought I could do such a dark character. There are two characters in the film and Homi Adajania came to me with both roles. Imtiaz Ali who has written the script was the one who suggested that I be offered both. Meera is similar to Love Aaj Kal but the character i picked is very dark - she is lovable and warm but has been through a lot. She is not someone I could identify with and a lot of energy and emotion has gone into playing her. It's about friendship, betrayal and love. The promos will be out with Agent Vinod.

Q. What are you looking forward to?
A. This is a big year for me. I am really looking forward to Cocktail. I can't wait for July to see how audience takes to it. I have always wanted to work with Dharma and after I saw Ayan's work in Wake Up Sid I really wanted to work with him.

Q. Increasingly there are women in strong roles or as leads. If you were to do such a strong character how would you want it to be?
A. My role of Veronica in Cocktail is a very strong character. There is a changing trend in our films and I am fortunate to be a part of this phase. I can see the transition since the last two years. If I had joined the industry now or even next year I wouldn't have seen it.

Q. How do you pick which brands to endorse?
A. The brands do their own research and go to the celebrities who will have a connect to it. I should also be able to connect with it. The brand has to fit and reflect a certain part of my personality. It's not about the money, I should be able to convince myself.

Q. What do you feel about performing at events?
A. I am not very comfortable about dancing at weddings and new year parties. Maybe it's because of the way I have been brought up; I wouldn't want my family to feel that cringe moment. Dance is an art for me.
