Lord Krishna had 16108 wives, with 8 main queens, rest 16100 were the one he rescued from Narakasura. When they all refused to go back to their respective houses from where they were kidnapped due to fear of being not accepted by society, at that timr Krishna married them to give them due respect. Each of his wives had an individual palace. When Narad wanted to see how Krishna is keeping all of them, he came to Dwarka, visited those palaces. He found Krishna with all of them in one place performing yagya, at other place having lunch, everywhere Krishna was engaged in various activities. The solder's wives & children who died in war were also in his shelter. This is given in Srimad Bhagvatam.Originally posted by: mathursharat
It is to update that during Ancient age (Satyug) when Prajapati Daksh was taking care of systems, it was well in customs to adopt and give shelters to orphan children. Being a Prajapati (King), this was Daksh's moral duty to give shelter, education and livelihood to orphans under his guardianship. Prajapati and Prasuti were not the parents for so many children.
This adoption system was in practice during Treta Yug and Dwapar Yug also. All we know and is not true that Lord Krishna was having 10,000 queens. In fact, those were not married to him. Those were the descendants of various kings or soldiers who died in wars. This has been described in Puraans.
