Sorry people. A few things have happened to delay the update. 1). Work has been a bitch and I can write a spoof-a-thon in about 30 minutes to vent, but a H2H chapter takes abt 2 hours. 2). After 41 chapters, I am finally slightly bored of the FF. I will update soon...maybe tonight. I know exactly what I have to write and how I am going to wrap this up which makes it, honestly, a little more uninteresting for me. But it will happen. Promise.

And @appy12: You are perfectly correct. Your tamil is better than my telegu. My Telegu ledu only.

Oh, but I did take Nancy'd advice and created a blog. if you are bored..you shd check it out. Even if you are not bored, pls check it out.

Cheers!

Chapter 42: Freddy comes to the party

"I thought it was a cocktail party?" asked Khushi wrinkling her nose.

"It is Minnie," said Freddy nonchalantly.

"Then why am I wearing THIS?" she pointed to the large hanger he had handed her.

"Minnie, for once in your life will you just do as you are told!" he replied exasperated. He pushed her up stairs. "Go. Change. Now. Or you'll be late to your own party." Khushi went upstairs reluctantly. She wasn't particularly enthused by the outfit he'd designed. It wasn't her. It hadn't been her for a long time. She sighed. And wondered what Arnav was wearing. Freddy had sent Arnav and everyone else off to Aadit's home to get changed for the party. It was all part of Freddy's big build-up. He hadn't said a word to her about what he had done for the one thing he'd been allowed to put together for her wedding.

2 hours later Khushi walked into the beautiful banquet hall in a posh London Hotel. Her jaw fell open when she saw it. A million tiny lights winked at her from the starry ceiling. White and gold curtains hung at the French windows that mined the length of the room on one side. And the whole room was like a movie set. There was a chaat wala in one corner, with an array of mouth-watering chaat on the cart in front of him. Next to him was a paan waala with the famous Lucknowi paan on display. He was flanked by a flower seller who had strings of fragrant jasmine laid out invitingly. He also had the red roses she'd occasionally tucked into her hair. A small little pedestal of a temple stood in one corner with the idol she'd worshipped best, Devi Maiyya. And in the centre of the room there was a large blue water pump. Slightly rusted, definitely well-worn and in Khushi's memory, the subject of many a quarrel. Behind the pump stood a shop she remembered very well. The old asbestos board said in faded lettering, "Gupta Sweets and Co. Estd. 1912" Oh, yes. Khushi remembered that shop very well indeed.

Every afternoon she would go there straight from school. She would throw her school bag in one corner, and press her nose against the glass cases that held the sweets she so loved. Stacks of Kaju katli, Badam barfi, Pedhas, Petha, Motichoor laddoos, and Son papdi stood in them, arranged oh-so-invitingly. They were always in the same place. Her father made sure of that. He had a system. And next to the Ras gollas were her favorites. The Jalebis. She would stare and stare and look imploringly at her father, till he would relent and hand her one, warning her to ask for no more. She would giggle and promise not to ask. Half an hour later he would hand her another resignedly. This time without her even asking. The standard joke in the Gupta house was that Khushi would lead them to a loss in business with all the Jalebis she ate. When she grew older, she helped out in the shop. She learnt to make the Jalebis she so loved. And her rewadi was extremely popular with customers. She'd spent many a happy afternoon standing in the insufferably hot kitchen behind the shop, watching over huge pots, stirring this and tasting that. The air there was always redolent with the scent of ghee. Ghee and rose essence and almonds and raisins and cashews and sugar syrup. She had loved that rich scent. Every evening she and her father would leave the shop for home, but make a pit stop in between. She HAD to eat something spicy to take the edge off all the Jalebis she had eaten and the sweet scents she had inhaled, she would explain patiently to her long suffering father. And so, they would eat chaat together. Then they would cross the street, pass by the blue pump where she stood in line each morning to fill water and climb up the narrow stair case of their tiny chawl to go home. At night, after dinner, she would sit by her window, the one with the white and gold curtains that she had saved up money to buy, and look on the night sky and dream dreams. Dreams that all young girls dreamed. Of a handsome knight in shining armor who would sweep her off her feet. Who would marry her and make her happy. Who would love her and cherish her. Whom she would love forever.

And now, after all these years, those virginal dreams of an innocent 16 year old that sat by a window and sighed with the breeze were coming true.

Khushi blinked back tears. Her whole family stood waiting for her, smiling. Khushi looked at them, one and all. All looking at her in keen expectation. Waiting to see her reaction. She looked at them, her eyes darting from one to the other. Her eyes sought out Arnav first. He was wearing a black Sherwani and white churidar. He'd had a haircut, she mused, and he looked very spiffy with none of that hair gel that she hated, making his hair stand up like a porcupine's. Sheila stood on one side of him, holding his hand. She was wearing a pink lehenga choli with silver sequins. She looked thrilled with her outfit. She felt very princess-like. Nita was in Malli's arms on the other side. Nita also wore a baby blue lehenga choli and looked cute as a button. Malli herself had allowed Freddy to put her in a red and black Sabyasachi sari. She looked stunning. Khushi glanced at Freddy, and laughed. Freddy wore a cream colored sherwani with gold embroidery, and a cream churidaar. Ever the fashionista, he had draped a red stole around his neck. And the rest of them. They were all there. Aadit, Anajli, Akash, Payal, Nani, Garima, Nigel, Arjun, little Khushi. All smiling at her like their cheeks would explode if they smiled less.

"So, whaddaya think Min?" drawled Freddy lazily. Khushi fell into his arms and wept a river down his sherwani in response.

"I can't beli-believe you, you, pu-put all thi-this together. Ff-for me," she sniffled into Freddy's chest, as he patted her head awkwardly.

"I guess that means you like it, eh?" he asked.

Khushi wiped her tears and stepped back to look at him. "You brought Khushi KUMARI Gupta back for an evening, Freddy. I thought she was dead. I thought only Khushi Minnie Gupta existed now. But clearly, there's still something of the old me left."

"And the old you looks very pretty tonight," said Freddy. "Doesn't she Arnav?" he asked Arnav who'd walked up to them.

Arnav stared Khushi from head to toe. From the shiny maangtika that fell onto her forehead to her red bindi, to the nosepin he'd never seen her wear before, to the red lipstick she so rarely broke out these days (she preferred browns for daily wear), to her heavy kundan necklace and matching jhumkas, to the red and gold Sharaara encrusted with Swarovski crystals that Freddy had designed specially for her, to the gold bangles on her wrists, to the silk dupatta draped casually across her shoulder, to the sliver of a bare midriff between where the blouse ended and the skirt began, to the red toenails peeking out from under the heavy ankle length skirt.

"She's stunning!" said Arnav, smiling at Khushi, and nodding to Freddy. "I specially like these," he said picking up a tiny red pom pom that hung from the short sleeve of her blouse on either side. Khushi giggled.

"I'm wearing them in my hair too," she laughed, swiveling to show him. Her hair hung in a braid down her back, threaded with a gold ribbon and red pom poms hanging uselessly, but prettily in the middle of her thick braid.

"I've spent nights fantasizing about those pom-poms swishing by me when you walk past," winked Arnav.

"Well, thanks to Freddy, that's one dream that's come true," quipped Khushi. She threaded one elbow through Freddy's arm and the other through Arnav's and walked into the warm embrace of her waiting family.

Khushi spent the next few hours reliving her childhood with Payal and Garima. Every aspect of the View from Khushi's window recreated so lovingly by Freddy held significance for them. The chaatwala had had a crush on Payal for the longest time. He'd let her have 2 aloo chaats for the price of one almost every day. She and Payal had prayed by idol of Devi Maiyya everyday before going to school. Extra on exam days. The flower seller was an old friend of their father's. She'd chat with Hasan Chachu everyday when she passed by his flower stand. He had the most amazing stories to tell. Of fairies and witches and evil princes and lost treasures. Khushi would sit for hours listening to his tales when she should've been doing homework. Then Garima would come and drag her upstairs kicking and screaming. Not only would Khushi get scolded for wasting time, Hasan Chachu would get a earful for not sending her home on time. They even spent a few moments recalling some of the choicest fights they'd had by the water pump. Champakali Agarwal was a neighbor and what they in those days called a "fighter cock". She specialized in hoarding water and had all 7 of her offspring stand in that long queue for water with their own individual buckets. Garima proudly recollected one morning when she'd told Champakali where got off in no uncertain terms. That night the family had had Malai Kofta for dinner to celebrate.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention please." Said Freddy. Everyone turned their attention to Freddy.

"This evening is for my good friend and colleague Khushi Kumari Gupta, better known as Minnie. She's tying the knot in 2 days, and while I don't really understand why she's marrying Arnav, that's not the point. The point is, I wish her all the very best for the future. I hope she and Arnav have a wonderful, blissful life together. This one's for you Minnie. I love you!" said Freddy raising a glass in toast. All the guests raised their champagne flutes to toast Khushi and Arnav's happiness.

"Main shaayar toh nahin," sang a voice in stiff, painstaking, Brit accented Hindi. Freddy was singing. Khushi gaped. Arnav spat his champagne out. Nigel looked a little put out. Only Aadit smiled benignly.

"Main shaayar to nahin,

magar ae haseen

Jab se dekha maine tujhko

Mujhko shaayari aa gayi"

He stopped with the one verse, but it was enough. Khushi knew how Helen Hunt had felt when Jack Nicholson told her "You make me want to be a better man." It was a heady feeling. Freddy singing was like Malli smiling. A rare event. And therefore to be cherished all the more. Khushi treasured it up like she treasured every moment of this magical evening he had created for her.

Arnav sidled up to her. "I'm the one you're marrying. Just reminding you!" he said, pouting at her open admiration of Freddy's serenade.

"I know Arnav," she said, shaking her head at him like he was a child. She stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. "I love you honey. And I'm so glad you've cut your hair. I didn't like that unkempt look you were cultivating," she said complainingly.

"You and all the other women!" said Arnav suggestively.

"What other women?" asked Khushi.

"Oh, you know. Di, Nani, Payal, even Malli told me I look better with my hair cut. Plus these last few days I'd been having these strange dreams. Like women all over the world were imploring me to get my hair cut. I decided to cut it just for my sanity. That's a weird, scary dream Khushi!" he said.

"Well, I'm just glad you listened to the voice of women world over. All the better for me!" said Khushi. "Aah, there's Aadit!" she said.

"What did you think of Freddy's singing?" asked Khushi.

"Since I taught him myself, I thought he was pretty excellent!" said Aadit with his usual modesty. Khushi laughed and turned to Lavanya who was waiting to talk to her.

"I wish I had a Freddy! I'm so jealous," said Lavanya hugging Khushi.

"Hey! Freddy's a person, not a thing," said Freddy slinging an arm around each lady's waist.

"And he's a very nice person." Said Khushi leaning to kiss Freddy's cheek. "Thanks for the memories, old and new," she said.

The evening lasted until the next morning. It was a very tired and sleepy, but extremely happy Khushi who dragged herself into bed at 3am. She spent an hour or so lying in bed and reliving every moment of the evening. Arnav was snoring gently when she finally decided to try and sleep. She snuggled close to him and closed her eyes. Her last thought before sleep finally hit was, she was getting married in 2 days.

Well, I hope you liked it. And, Arnav gotta a haircut. That should make a lot of people happy! 😉

Cheers!
