Guys as i was watching todays fab episode👏...i remembered a story which i heard from my sis who lives in mumbai..😃...thr is a a very old Shiv temple on the outskirts of Mumbai...and according to the myths...once Lord Shiva became very angry on Daksh for behaving arrogantly...so he became furious and opened his third eye or took on his Raudra roop...everyone was scared then Vishnu ji suggested only Sati his other half can pacify him😳...so Sati apperaed as a Yoni and and absorbed the angry Shiova or Linga in herself which pacified him...so Yoni is the name for female reproductive organ and linga is for male😊...this is so basic and pure even after having somewhat sensual connotations...Sati Absorbing Shiva linga in herself which here in our serial is said as Dhaaran karna...Wowww...i founds it so basic and true male and female are just like that they are build for each other are like puzzles which fit and fullfill with each other but are incomplete without each other...and Shiv and Sati/Shakti are the base of such a beautiful, basic and raw relation...sati's dhaaran of Shivlinga is a beautifdul potrayel of such relationClap...i was overwhelmed and found it to be so pure...wat say guys...no offfense to anyone i was just sharing a story and my opinions , iam myself a devotee of Lord Shiva...Tongue...

SHIVA LINGAM
In his popular aspect, Shiva is a member of Triad along with Brahma, the creator and Vishnu, the protector. As a member of triad Shiva takes the role of destructor, so that Brahma can regenerate. In this visible aspect Lord appears with three eyes, matted hair, with the garland of snakes and skulls. He wears tiger and dear skin and holds drums, horns and trishul (Three headed spear) in his hand.

But in his original form, Shiva is the param braham ' the supreme creator and he himself is the triad. The supreme Shiva is Rudra (or hollow) and is formless. This supreme Shiva is represented by the Shiva Lingam and is pronounced by the universal word ? (Aum). The Shiva Lingam is full of mysteries and tales and myths, some of which are even baseless. Nevertheless, this is one of the most popular form in which the Lord is worshipped.

Shiva Lingam ' Meaning and the myths

The Sanskrit word 'Lingam' means symbol. Thus the literal meaning of Shiva Lingam is the symbol of Shiva. The Supreme Shiva doesn't have a form and every form is his form. The Shiva Lingam represents him, the Supreme Shiva who is formless. The way when we see a smoke, we infer the presence of fire, the moment we see Shiva Lingam we immediately visualize the existence of the Supreme Shiva.

It has been a common myth that Shiva Lingam represents male genital organs. This is not only misleading but also base less. Such misinterpretations are done in later Vedic period and popularized much later, when Indian literatures actually came into hands of foreign scholars. It was difficult to interpret the language and a word may have different meaning depending on the context. Some of the easy interpretation may be misleading. And such misinterpretation may actually be welcome, if you want to find the defects in somebody else's faith. This misunderstanding is can be one of the most glaring examples of such a situation. Misinterpretations of actual Sanskrit literature led to this false belief. Shiva Lingam is a differentiating mark; it is certainly not a sex mark.

The Lingam Purana states:

(There are 2 Sanskrit shlokas here which are not coming here, please see them in the link given above)
??????? ???????? ???????????????? ?
???-????-??????? ????-???????????????? ?

meaning:

the foremost Lingam which is devoid of colour, taste, hearing, touch etc is spoken of as Prakriti or nature.

The nature itself is a Lingam (or symbol) of Shiva. When we see nature, we infer the presence of its creator ' Shiva. Shiva Lingam is the mark of Shiva the creator, Shiva the sustainer and Shiva the destructor. It also dispels another myth in which Shiva is considered only as a destructor.

Another authentic reference comes from Skanda Purana where lingam is clearly indicated as the supreme Shiva from where the whole universe is created and where it finally submerge.

????? ????????????: ?????? ???? ???????
???: ???? ??????? ????????????????? ?
(?????? ?????)

The endless sky (that great void which contains the entire universe) is the Linga, the Earth is its base. At the end of time the entire universe and all the Gods finally emerge in the Linga itself.

Now this should clarify the settle the doubts once and forever.

Forms of Shiva Lingam

Shiva Lingam is worshiped in two common forms ' Chala (Moveable) Lingam and Achala (Non-Moveable or Fixed) Lingam.

Chala Lingam (Moveable Lingam)

The Chala Lingams may be kept in the shrine of one's own home for worship or prepared temporarily with materials like sand, clay, dough or rice for worship and dispensed with after the worship. Another form of the Chala Lingams can also be worn on the body as a pendent in the necklace etc. Chala Lingams are often made of quartz, mercury or metals.

Achala Lingam (Fixed Lingam)

Achala Lingams (or fixed Lingams) are installed in temples and are un-moveable once they are installed. There are rigid rules for achala Lingams which must be followed. Achala Lingams must be offered prayers at fixed times and without failed and greater sanctity is maintained. Usually Lingams are made of black stones.

The Appearance and significance of Shiva Lingam

A Shiva Lingam is generally made up of black or white stones, marbles or metals or Quartz. A Shiva Lingam has three distinct parts which are considered as portions of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The Lower part represents Brahma, the middle Vishnu and the upper and the most prominent represents Shiva. Thus Shiva Lingam represents all the three powers in one- as the Param Braham or Supreme Shiva.

Another interpretation considers Shiva Lingam to be divided in two parts ' Shiva and Shakti. Thus Shiva Lingam are symbols to represent the aspects of the Supreme Shiva. From one view Shiva is Shiva and Shakti; from another view point Shiva is Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva himself).

Shiva Lingams made up of quartz have special significance. Such Lingams have no colour of its own but it takes the colour of any object that comes in its contact. The ling as such represents the attribute-less and formless supreme Shiva.

There is mysterious and indescribable power in Shiva Lingam to induce the concentration of mind. It is like the crystal glazing, mind easily attains one- pointedness by looking at the Shiva Lingam. This is the reason why ancient scholars and sages advocated the worship of Shiva Lingam and its installations in temples.

Listen to the message of Shiva Lingam and it will say:

"I am one without a second".

Important Shiva Lingam across India

Shiva Lingam worship is one of the most popular forms of worship offered by Hindus. Every town, cities, villages, blocks will have at least on temple with Shiva Lingam. However, of all the Shiva Lingams, few carry special importance with them and have been referred in Vedas and Puranas. The important of them are:

  1. Jyotir Lingams: There are 12 Jyotir located in various parts of India. They are well documented in Puranas. They are:
Somenath (Somnath, Gujarat) Mallika-Arjun (Shrishailam, AP) Kashi-Vishwanath (Varanashi, UP)
Aumkareshwar (Aumkareshwar, MP) Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain, MP) Trayambakeshwar (Near Nashik, Maharashtra)
Kedarnath (Himalaya) Vaidyanath (Deogarh, Jharkhand) Rameshwar (Tamil Nadu)
Ghrineshwar Nageshwar Bhimshankar
  1. Panchbhut Lingams: The whole world consists of 5 basic elements ' air, water, fire, earth and sky. The Panchbhut Lingam of Shiva represents these five elements. These Lingams are:
1. Kalahastisvar 2. Jambukesvar 3.Arujachalesvar
4. Ekambaresvar 5. Natraja

See i told you dear...the moment anyone starts to explain the real meaning of a shiv linga...ppl either start to curse or say that the person is vulgar and does not respect Shiva or simply give examples or articles which declare otherwiswe...i dont know why ppl who follow hinduism are such hypocrites...no offense to anyone here...i didnt start this post to gain knowledge of the Shiv linga...since i already have...my grandfather is an archeologist so more than anyone he knows all about ancient civilizations and symbols...shiv ling puja or Phallus worship dates back to the indus valley civilization/...and thr are thousands of proofs to certify this Shiv linga or a statue similar to shbiv linga was dicovered in the in Indus valley civilization excavations which shows that we hindus did worship Reproductive organs and thr is nothing bad in that...as i said its the basic rule...the start of the universe an the conming together of two ppl...some hindu fanatics who think this is not right and ppl will view hinduism wrongly outside have created all false stoiries...they think that this is bad or dirty...i do not i think its beautiful...just like in Da Vinci code wen the told her that Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus Christ ...she asks but how can he be married he is God...he replies " would that be so bad...why are we all hell bent on proving the so called pure form of almighty in a orthodox way...the coming together is also pure...Shiv and Sati...Shiv Linga and Yoni are the base of human and the chain of recreation...its a sign...divine and pure
...Lord Shiva was cursed that he wud be worshipped in his linga form due to his wild nature...and so Shiv Linga is worshipped...
The Shiv Ling, depicted in consummate union with the Yoni ( vulva ) of Shakti, is representative of the most wonderful and miraculous feature of life itself. What distinguishes life from non-life, after all? Above all else, the ability to reproduce its own kind. If we are to revere the concept that life itself is sacred- then why is the most characteristic feature of life, the act of progenition, any less sacred? It is not only sex we are talking about here. It is the consummation of the vast and different energies of the male and female universal prerogative, of which the Shiv Ling in union is a symbol- celebrating the fact that humankind has two sexes, each with its unique attributes and qualities, and when they come together, they produce a synergy, they create MORE life, they become more than the sum of their individual parts. Many ancient civilisations recognized the wonder of this concept- including the Chinese, who represent it somewhat more abstractly in the symbol of Yin and Yang. It is a tribute to these ancient and wise people that they were able to perceive true miracles, true wonderment, in the very features of life which surround us in our everyday existence. They did not need to have some man walk upon water to see a miracle, nor see crippled people cured instantaneously- or, worse yet, read about it in some book and call their blind adherence to such beliefs "faith".
and if that is not enough i think ppl shud go and see the temples of Khajuraho and see wat Shiv and Shakti are like ...varipous of the poses and statues belong to Lord Shiva and Sati/Shakti

The Mahabharata says 'Know everything, which is male, to be Ishana, and all that is female to be Uma; for this whole world, animate and inanimate, is pervaded by these two bodies. Shiva's divine Linga is worshipped by the Gods, seers, Gandharvas and Apsaras.' (Chapter 7, section 20, verses 22)

The greatness of this form of Shiva is based on the fact that the children bear neither the lotus symbol of Brahma nor of Vishnu's discuss'but one marked with the male and female organs, the linga and yoni, originated from Mahadeva and Devi (Chapter 13, section 19, verses 78)

Puranas and Epics in Hinduism narrate in detail why Shiva is worshipped in the form of linga. It is said that the Supreme Being appeared before Lord Brahma and Vishnu in the form of a 'pillar of fire', which had no end and beginning. It is one among the many symbols of brahmans.

according to the puranas Lord Shiva appeared first in form of a bright pillar when Brhamaji & Vishnuji were arguing about who is the biggest among the. When they couldn't locate beginning or end of the pillar then Lord Shiva appeared in front of them. Since then he is worshiped in jyotirling form. This is Nirakar form of God. Even while meditating if one has to visualise Nirakar roop, he will see bright light only. Mahakaal temple in Ujjain has the Shivling which is deep upto Patal-loka. Babulnath temple in Mumbai's shivling too is quite deep in earth. Which supports the purana's version. Same is the story of many Shivlings. Puranas were written by our rishis in Satyuga, much much before Indus Valley civilization existed & interepreted by so called scholars. Those rishis were quite ahead of us. Why accepting what is written in Puranas which is baze of our Mythology & faith ridiculed? Shivling dharan karana- is Sati was holding a form of Shiva woship in her hand. Was there any other way, at the river? Even while wearing a Gemstone recommended for a person on an auspicious time is calles Gem-stone dharan karana. Such simple action can never be interpreted the way is it is mentioned by you.
