Transcript of LIVE INDIATIMES CHAT with TV actor, Rohit Roy at 12 noon (IST) on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, in Mumbai

"It is really the character which works on TV"

Rohit Roy
TV actor

Ajji> So are you enjoying your new role of an anchor in ' Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' . How did you get this offer?
Rohit Roy> Yes I am having a lot of fun. I took it up as a challenge because a very short notice was given to me. But the overwhelming response really took by surprise. The director of ' Sa Re... ' had seen me hosting a show called 'Dance Diva' on Zoom and he knew that I was very interested in music. So he gave me an offer.

Azcd> What are you planning next?
Rohit Roy> Well the next is the big show called 'Virasaat' which stars me and Sangeeta Ghosh in the main lead. It's got a huge supporting cast of Aman Verma, Amar Uphadyay. Other than that I am doing 3-4 films which will be out end by the end of this year or latest by early next year.

Nazia> Tell me about your character in " Virasat "?
Rohit Roy> Well I am playing a lover boy in ' Virasaat '. It has shades of Akshay Khanna from Taal and Aamir Khan from Qyamat se Qyamat Tak. He believes that the power of love can make the world go around.

Ajji> You have worked in both films and tele-serials. Which one does you like the most?
Rohit Roy> I honestly like both the mediums. TV is a very good training ground for an actor and films is the next logical step. The only difference is that films are for life while people forget TV serials by the next week.

Tg5tg6y> That means you agree that an actor's popularity is limited to his or her last appearance on TV
Rohit Roy> It's absolutely true. You could become hugely popular with one show like 'Sujal' of ' Kahiin Toh Hoga' but it is really the character which works on TV. But in the next show one has to prove it all over again.

Momo> Are you planning to launch an album of yours, sometime in the future?
Rohit Roy> Yes, how do you know? I am working on it right now. It should be out February 2007 and its basically pop music.

Chiinu> Amongst the new crop of directors who is your favourite and why?
Rohit Roy> I don't know about the absolutely new ones but the my favourite directors are Sanjay Gupta, Vikram Bhatt, Siddharth Anand, Kunal Kohli because they make the kind of films I would like to act in.

Lizz> I must say you are much popular than your wife. What does she feels about it?
Rohit Roy> She is very happy for me, there is no abhimaan. Rather there have been times when she has been much more popular than me. That has never been an issue between us. We are very secure in our relationship.

Lizz> How would you rate your progress as an actor from 'Swabhimann' to 'Sarkar'
Rohit Roy> I think I have matured a lot since then. In ' Swabhimaan ' I was completely raw and nervous which is why people could see a nervous energy in Rishabh Malhtora (my character) where as in my performance in Sarkaar there is much more maturity and confidence which has come about after years of training in TV.

Lizz> Why don't we see much of you on silver screen
Rohit Roy> Since none of my earlier films worked, you didn't saw much of me of the big screen. I have now signed five films so fortunately next time we chat on indiatimes you won't have the same complaint.

Tg5tg6y> What is the secret of a successful marriage, according to you? Since both of you are working in the glamour industry.
Rohit Roy> There is no secret which is restricted to the glamour industry. At home we are just a normal couple. Rather it actually helps being from the same profession in understanding each other's timings and lifestyle. We have our fair share of fights like any normal couple and make up like any normal couple.

Sonal> Do you consider the infiltration of silver screen stars of yester years on the small screen as a threat?
Rohit Roy> Not at all, on the other hand it's great to have stars on TV. It proves that the power of TV is great and secondly the more competition the better it is for everybody. It's an honor to have Amitabh Bachchan on TV.

Sonal> Do you think the Balaji crop of saas bahu daily never ending soap operas have deteriorated the quality (of course not the quantity) of television serials
Rohit Roy> If you stopped watching these shows then they would not get made. It is wrong to point fingers at Balaji or any other production company because the TRP of all their shows are higher than any other shows on TV which proves that India is watching. So if you think that the quality is suffering stop watching.

Tg5tg6y> What would you never leave home without?
Rohit Roy> My mobile and my credit cards.

Momo> We have heard that you were mobbed by females. How did you feel?
Rohit Roy> It's good to be mobbed and it's interesting to know that more of my fans are females. So keep mobbing me.

Tg5tg6y> What goes into enhancing the performance from the one that is given in the script
Rohit Roy> That's a good question. Let me give you an example; In Sarkar my role was that of a angry young politician so other than the lines I had to work on my demeanor, my walk, my attitude and my dialogue delivery where as in Virasaat I am playing a lover boy with intensity, so along with my clothes and appearance I have changed my look my dialogue delivery and my reaction to other people's dialogue. All this is possible only if you are interested in the Kraft of acting.
