CHAPTER 14
Even though Vicky gave Mukti a ring, Perna still wanted to have an official engagement ceremony for the happy couple. Mukti and Vicky were hesitant at first considering that they still hadn't found the doctor; however, Prem promised to keep searching while they tried to build a new life because that's what Asha would have wanted. While Prem worked with various detectives, Vicky and Mukti spent time together as a couple, and everyone else prepared for the engagement.
On the engagement day, Mukti and Vicky decided to visit Asha's grave in the morning. This time they placed a huge bouquet of several different flowers together. Mukti was too emotional to say anything, but Vicky held her tightly in his arms while he expressed his innermost feelings to Asha.
Vicky: Today, your mother and I are going to form a really special bond that will be between us for the rest of our lives. I wish that you were here with us today. I've seen and felt you grow through various X-rays and your kicks. Sometimes, I would forget that you weren't my biological daughter. I am proud of the woman your mother has become. I admire her spirit and her pure, generous heart. I also know that you are with us in spirit, and I am proud to call you my daughter regardless.
Mukti was so touched by what Vicky had said that she broke down into tears. Vicky comforted his future fianc and helped her to the car. A few minutes after Mukti and Vicky left, Prem arrived at the cemetery. He had brought a few roses and placed them next to the bouquet, which he figured were from Mukti and Vicky.
Prem: For the first time in my life, I fulfilled one promise. I promised to you that I'd make sure that your mother gets the life she deserves…today she is going to begin a whole new journey with the right person.
The cold breeze embraced Prem. He felt as if Asha was thanking him for what he had done. Once the feeling was gone, Prem drove back to the engagement.
As soon as Mukti and Vicky entered Bajaj house, they were immediately separated into different rooms. Indroneil helped Vicky get ready, hoping that doing this would turn destiny in his favor and he would find someone. On the other hand, Mukti was surrounded by several ladies that were doing different things to her at the same time. She even received a call from Sneha wishing her the best of luck.
Once the guests had arrived, Vicky and Mukti were brought downstairs. Again, Vicky put the same ring on Mukti's finger and Mukti placed a nice ring on Vicky's finger. Afterwards, Mohini had announced a small surprise in honor of this occasion. She had organized a performance by a relative from Calcutta. Leaving the audience in a midst of mystery, the lights turned off and a spotlight shined a female finger. The dancer danced to a traditional song, winning everyone's applause. Later, Mohini introduced the mysterious girl as Debonnita. Debonnita seemed to be attracting a lot of men except for two—Vicky who was busy laughing and celebrating with Mukti and Prem who was busy mourning over losing his love. Debonnita tried to get his attention but he just walked away. Eventually, the DJ played a romantic song for Vicky and Mukti. Anurag stood by Prem and supported him while they watched the two dance. Once the song was over, the DJ invited everyone else with some fast numbers. Everyone joined the happy couple. Vicky, took everyone by surprise when he started showing off some really hot dance moves: everyone had perceived him as a quiet guy that loves to spend his evenings reading novels. However, this personality seemed to be brining more laughter on Mukti's face. After dancing for several minutes, Mukti seemed to be getting a little uncomfortable. Everyone else was too busy to notice that she was sweating heavily and had trouble breathing. Mukti quietly sneaked out of the crowd and headed towards the bar to get some water. After taking a few steps, she lost her balance and collapsed on the floor. Prem, who was standing on one side, was the first to notice this. He screamed her name at the top of his lungs, catching everyone's attention. Perna, Vicky, and Prem immediately ran up to Mukti and tried to wake her up, but she did not seem to respond. Vicky then picked her up and sprinted to the car. While Vicky sat in the back with Mukti, trying to get her to open her eyes, Prem raced to the hospital crossing several red lights and stop signs.
CHAPTER 15
The doctors were conduction tests after tests, putting Mukti through various machines. Vicky was getting impatient by the moment since they weren't answering any of his questions. He was about to storm into the doctor's office when a nurse arrived and told them that the doctor would like to speak to the girl's family. Perna, Mr. Bajaj, Vicky, and Prem went inside since Jeevan was unavailable. Vicky and Perna sat down in the chair while Prem and Mr. Bajaj stood behind them.
Vicky: What's going on doctor? What's wrong with Mukti?
Doctor: Before I say anything, I have a question for you…did Mukti ever have a transplant before.
Perna turned around and looked at Mr. Bajaj. It seemed as if they got an idea what may be happening, but Prem and Vicky were confused more than ever.
Perna: Yes doctor, when Mukti was five she had a heart transplant…but why are you asking us this?
Doctor: It seems that Mukti's body is rejecting this heart.
Mr. Bajaj: Well there must be something you can do.
Doctor: Well we are trying some medication on her, but that its effects can last for a limited time. The best thing to do is another heart transplant…as you know, it is hard to find donors in this society. Mukti was fortunate to receive a donor when she was younger.
Prem: If we can't find a donor here, then we can take her to another country.
Doctor: Mr. Prem, there is a shortage of donors in every country and there is a long list of people waiting for organ donations everywhere. In such matters, money isn't of much use. Right now…let's hope that the medication starts taking its effects.
Vicky quietly left the office and made his way to Mukti's room. He sat by her bedside and held onto her hand hoping that he would wake up from some nightmare. Unfortunately, the whole night passed by and Vicky had dozed off. Fortunately, Mukti woke up and gently caressed Vicky's forehead. He immediately sprinted up to her gentle touch. Vicky could tell that Mukti had figured out what was going on with her, but he tried to be as cheerful as he could be.
Vicky: So you finally decided to wake up…that's a nice surprise to give to your fianc on the engagement day.
Mukti: Sorry if I scared you.
Vicky: You're forgiven…just don't scare me like that ever again.
Mukti couldn't promise him that because she knew that there was no guarantee about her condition.
Vicky: Anyways…I haven't eaten anything since yesterday and I'm sure you must have built a good appetite from all the sleeping…wait here and I'll get us something decent to eat from a restaurant nearby.
Prem: There's no need for that.
Prem had walked into the room with a huge lunch box. Although he wanted to stay with Mukti, he knew that only Vicky had that right.
Prem: Ms. Basanti your Chotima woke me from my beauty sleep and commanded me to bring this big breakfast for you two…I didn't get time to eat, so I am going to steal some of your breakfast.
Prem's acting was of some good use. He had cheered up the environment. After they had finished eating, the doctor came in and said that upon Mr. Bajaj's insistence Mukti can go home if she agreed to take complete rest and allowed a nurse to monitor her all day. Mukti immediately agreed since she hated hospitals like anyone else.
CHAPTER 16
Mukti followed the doctor's instructions and stayed in her room all day long. Vicky would stop by often and tried to make her happy with small things like small candlelight dinners, flowers, chocolates, and movie nights. In addition, everyone would visit Mukti at least once a day. Prem would come a few times, and every time Debonnita "coincidentally" would arrive at the same time, forcing him to deal with her.
At the same time, Anurag and Mr. Bajaj noticed that they were suffering from several losses in their business. Many of their rivals were winning various deals and contracts by a close call. Perna was also getting some cranky calls. The detectives reported that they were missing the doctor by a few minutes. It seems as if someone was warning him beforehand. However, that individual could have easily sent the doctor out of country but didn't. Whoever this person may be, he wants to torture them. Prem was starting to see a connection between all that was going on. He shared this information with Vicky, but both agreed that all this be kept away from Mukti.
One midnight, the whole Bajaj household was sound asleep. Just then, the dead silence was broken by a scream coming from Mukti's room. Prem was the first person to arrive there. Mukti was screaming in pain, and the nurse said that she had to be taken to the hospital. Mukti was immediately rushed in the intensive care unit where she was placed under close observation. Vicky had arrived just in time when the doctor stepped out.
Doctor: I'm sorry…but the only way to save Mukti is through another heart transplant.
Vicky could no longer stay strong: he was shattered by the news. Prem tried to comfort him but he himself was broken inside. In the meantime, Mr. Bajaj and Anurag decided to post messages on their respective channels for a donor. Vicky would spend days sitting next to Mukti, who would open her eyes once in a while. In the meantime, the elders made every effort to find Mukti a donor. Prem was starting to throw tantrums because he seemed to be losing control over everything.
One afternoon, Prem received a call from one of his detectives.
Detective: Sir, we've managed to track that doctor. We've followed him to a deserted area. You should get here fast.
The detective gave directions. Prem then called Vicky who was at the hospital. He quietly stepped out of the room so Mukti wouldn't wake up.
Vicky: What is it Prem?
Prem: The detectives found the doctor.
Vicky: They found the doctor! Where is he?
Prem reiterated everything to Vicky.
Vicky: I'll be there.
Vicky left without saying goodbye to Mukti, who he thought was sleeping. However, she had heard him step out and overheard his conversation. Mukti immediately changed her clothes, sneaked out of the hospital, and grabbed a taxi to follow Vicky's car.
