Apara Mehta with daughter Khushali
Apara Mehta's daughter Khushali is the latest entrant to the acting world. She features with her mother in the Gujarati drama, Tame Hasatu Modhu Rakho.

Directed by Feroz Bhagat and produced by Dinyar Contractor, the play does not have them as mother-daughter on stage, too. Instead, Apara essays the role of a teacher while Khushali is the student.

Apara, who is celebrating 25 years in the world of stage and 10 years in television, feels that in a way Khushali's decision was expected.

"Khushali has literally grown up backstage. She has seen me perform on stage and television. But when you are actually part of it, you realise what acting entails — lots of hard work and erratic hours."

July jodi

Initially, Khushali had expressed a desire to be an assistant director to Bhagat. But when they began casting for the play, he asked her to be part of the cast. Tame Hasatu Modhu Rakho is slated to open on July 9 at Tejpal hall. Though Khushali is going through the rigmarole of rehearsals and readings, it is not exactly a new avenue for her.

"Besides my mother, I have watched my father (Darrshan Jariwalla) and my grandmothers (Mandakini Mehta and Leela Jariwalla) were also into theatre. As a child, I have done a bit in Kanti Madia's Savka Sarname and four years ago, I featured as a replacement in Kamlesh Mota's Olkhan."

Besides this project, Khushali who has done her BA from St Andrew's College, last year, is taking it as it comes. "I did a bit of modelling and am in the process of auditioning for television."

Her best work

The Apara-Feroz combo has staged several successful plays on the Gujarati floorboards including the current Kem Chho Majjama, besides Apru To Badhu Pvt Ltd and Adhura Toi Madhura. On the small screen, Apara, best remembered as Savita of Kyunki, is now Kuki kaki in the Zee daily Saat Phere and will also be seen in J D Majethia's Resham Dank, slated for Star One.

On the Bollywood front, she features as Fardeen Khan's mother in Meghna Gulzar's Baat Pakki (formerly called Honeymoon).
