Though pampered and doted on, Sushant grew up with many expectations of him to become a great intellectual like his family before him. However, life took many turns to land him where he is today: the tragic passing of his mother; an impromptu Shiamak Davar dance show; performing at Melbourne with Aishwarya; moving to Mumbai; joining theatre, dance, and martial arts groups. Life made many twists, but an opportunity was found on each new doorstep.
Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil, 2008-2010
Bright, cheerful, and cheeky, Preet Juneja is the character Sushant finds closest to his own persona. A little hotheaded when affronted, but usually finding humor in all situations, Preet was the ray of positivity and comic relief of the show. The character was ended in a bomb blast to allow Sushant more time to focus on his other character from Balaji Telefilms.
Pavitra Rishta, 2009-2011
For once the hero was not the knight in shining armor, but rather the shy mechanic with grease stains on his old clothes. Manav Deshmukh set a new standard for male leads on Indian television, with a vulnerable but committed character who received equal screentime as his female counterpart. The character grew and changed with time, but praise for Sushant's acting, as well as his chemistry with co-star (and now fiancee) Ankita Lokhande, never ended. In October 2011 Sushant left the show in search of new and different opportunities.
Zara Nach Ke Dikha, 2010
Though he was perhaps one of the best trained dancers on the show, luck simply did not shine on Sushant as the season was filled with injuries and illnesses. However, he still managed to put forth excellent performances, and he even received a perfect score for a smooth hip-hop routine. His team did not end up winning, but they walked away with an experience to remember.
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, 2010-2011
Only the second week in, Sushant and his choreographer Shampa Sonthalia managed to take away a perfect score along with the hearts of the judges. Every performance outdid the previous one, making him the highest scorer in Jhalak history, as well as the contestant with the most weekly wins. Guests and competitors alike knew of his immense talent and astounding fan base, but the man poised to go home with the trophy unfortunately ended up in 2nd place without much of an explanation. Yet, it was a marvelous experience for the star and his fans alike, with Sushant receiving more adulation than ever before.
The year whizzed by in a blur, but many shining moments were left behind for all to remember. Professional excellence was highlighted, with four Best Actor awards and two other nominations. Audiences were dazzled with performances at Miss India, the launch of the hit song Saibo, and the unveiling of Zee's new logo. Fans far and wide got a taste of the talent with shows in South Africa, Mauritius, and Bangalore. Love took a leap forward with a heartfelt proposal on national television. Stardom was felt while mingling with Hrithik at Just Dance, Kareena on Pavitra Rishta, and Aishwarya while shooting a Lux ad. Success was recorded with multiple appearances in People Magazine, including the cover and the Sexiest Men edition. Goodbyes were said to the sets of Pavitra Rishta, and greetings were given to a new beginning and a brighter future.
