Ah! Welcome Lady Bug. Yes, the chapters are short and it will continue to be so. It's going to be daily update so I guess writing 1000 to 1500 words daily isn't all that bad, is it? 😆
Chapter 4:
Three days after the crime
"I am here," Geet said to mouth piece looking through the glass where Maan and Satya were seated opposite a smart looking man who was probably in his mid-forties.
Maan slightly nudged his head acknowledging her presence while Satya completely ignored it. Mr. Guha was in interview room completely haggled after a long flight and the news had made his shoulder droop. The redness in his eyes was an indication of his sadness and his fidgety persona made it obvious that he wanted to be elsewhere. She didn't blame him.
Satya switched on the recorder and opened case file.
"How was your family life Mr. Guha," Maan asked once the initial protocols were all dealt with.
"Just fine I guess," the older man replied hoarsely after a moment's break.
"Do you have any enemies?" Satya asked. Mr. Guha looked up from table and shook his head. "You can't think of anyone Mr. Guha?" Satya pressed. "Someone you might have fired or picked on a fight with at your neighborhood?" Satya continued his questioning.
"No inspector. There isn't anyone like that," he replied.
"Ask him about his wife," Geet spoke from the other side.
"What about Mrs. Guha?" Maan asked. Mr. Guha swallowed visibly.
"She didn't have any enemies either I guess," he replied.
"He is lying about his wife. But don't press on it right now. Distract with something unimportant." Geet said.
"How do you know he is lying?" Emily, who was standing next to Geet outside the interview room asked.
"When Maan asked about Mrs. Guha, his face faltered for a moment indicating that there is something about her which he doesn't want to talk about," Geet replied.
"Do you know what that might be?" Emily asked.
"Well I can only speculate," Geet smiled.
They heard Maan ask Mr. Guha to provide them with a list of people who had access to his house - security, gardener, house helps, baby sitter et al. Maan looked up and nodded at her discreetly.
"Are you sure?" She asked him. Emily looked at the two of them confused not understanding what was going on. Maan turned his attention back to Mr. Guha after yet another slight nod.
"What was that all about?" Emily asked.
"Three days ago, at the crime scene you made an observation - the room didn't have any new photographs of the boy."
"What about it?"
"Maan is going to ask about Mr. Guha's relationship with his son." Geet replied.
"Isn't it a little premature to start that line of questioning?" Emily asked with a raised eyebrow. Geet sighed and shrugged.
"By the way, why aren't you inside there asking these questions yourself?" Emily asked.
"Emily, you know the protocol very well. I am a civilian and a consulting psychologist. My role becomes active only in bullpen and when a suspect is deemed mentally unstable. Of course I go to crime scenes because I need first hand information and not a report. But anything outside this is extremely rare." Geet replied.
"You don't watch Bones, do you?" Emily asked grinning at her. She could practically see Satya rolling his eyes at that.
"What is Bones?" Geet asked, confused.
"A TV show where Bones, the titular character is a forensic anthropologist and she works with FBI special agent Booth. She gets to perform interviews and knock on civilian doors," Emily said without letting the topic go. Maan looked up and glared at the glass in the room directing it across it to Emily who promptly ignored him.
"That's legally not possible," Geet replied flatly.
"I think Bones did get a deal like that and FBI had to pull some serious strings to get her to perform interviews," Emily said thoughtfully.
"It's not going to happen Emily. It's fascinating how you are more fascinated by pop-culture references while you very well know how utterly fraudulent they are," she replied looking up from case file. Emily grinned in response.
"This is all I can think of at this moment," Mr. Guha said pushing the clipboard and pen towards Maan. Satya thanked him politely and picked up the clipboard.
"How do you describe your relationship with your son Mr. Guha?" Maan asked dropping the politeness to a notch and making his voice as clinically detached as possible.
"What...?" Mr. Guha looked taken aback with the question. However he recovered quickly. "What are you trying to ask me, ACP?" His voice was hard. Maan threw in photographs of the room and pointed to pictures.
"There are no recent photos of your son," Maan barked.
"Maan is banking too much on a very little bit of information," Emily said and frowned when Mr. Guha picked up the photo and ran his fingers on it.
"It could be insignificant but in my experience, these small bits help us to break through people like Mr. Guha and get him to talk; I mean really talk," Geet shrugged.
"But it may be unimportant, right?" Emily asked again.
"That's actually more probable than it being useful for us. The evidences are not always concrete Emily. Behavioral observations are primarily an aid to shortlist pool of suspects and break them through. In the end you do need forensic evidence or a full confession to charge." Geet said. Emily simply nodded her head.
"I have a very busy life ACP Maan. My job keeps me on road most of the times and for past four years I have been on fast track. It saddens me to say that I didn't get a chance to spend as much time with my wife and son as I would have liked," he replied tears welling up in his eyes.
"How did you make up to him?" Maan asked. Mr. Guha looked surprised. "I mean when a parent is absent due to work related issue, they make it up by over compensating for their absence by buying expensive toys, video games, clothes etc.," Maan explained. Mr. Guha stared at Maan.
"When I got my promotion four years ago I knew what I would be getting into. So whenever I missed an important milestone in my son's life, I made it up to him once I was back from trip," he replied and took a deep breath. "But with passing months it became difficult and the strain was visible between us." He said putting his face in his hands. Geet sighed.
"Go for it Maan," she said.
"What about your wife?" Maan asked. Again the strain on his face was visible. He shrugged.
"She had a big social circle which kept her occupied for most part of her time." He replied.
"He is obviously lying about his wife. He knows that her aloofness with his absence was odd and off the mark. The man clearly loves his son as we saw evidences all around the boy's room - the imported toys, foreign labels on the clothes." Geet said.
"Do you know any of your wife's friends' Mr. Guha?" Maan asked. He shook his head.
"Do you at least know who she was sleeping with?" Maan asked without missing a beat.
Mr. Guha turned red.
"What the fu*k are you on about ACP? How dare you..." The anger in Mr. Guha exploded and reverberated on the walls of the interview room.
Maan sat quietly and watched the man react and go ballistic. He stared at the glass separation and Geet knew what it meant.
