On the Job
Designer duo, Nidhi (left) and Winnie Malhotra, dress up your favourite saas-bahu soap stars
How it all began: Fashion designing has always been our combined dream. We chose to design outfits for onscreen celebrities simply because it is more challenging. We began with films like Ashant and Aashiq Awara. In 1993, we bagged the assignment to design costumes for Parampara on Zee TV. Since then, the offers haven't stopped pouring in.
What's the task: It's not just about designing costumes. The challenge lies in the fact that we have to create a signature style for each character. You have to work in sync with make-up artists and hairstylists. Saat Phere and Shararat are some of the serials we are currently working on.
Qualifications: We obtained a degree in fashion designing from London School Of Arts. Though a formal qualification is not essential, it certainly helps. It enables us to understand the nuances of fabrics and other technicalities. It requires a great amount of hard work and perseverance to make it big in this field.
Investment: An initial investment of Rs 5 lakhs is required to start out. If you are good at your job, you will earn it back in two to three months, depending on the agreement.
Upside: Both, monetary rewards and job satisfaction are far greater in the television industry as compared to Bollywood.
Downside: It is annoying when certain stars and directors tell us how to do our job.
