'My fans literally harass me'

The ever-controversial TV hottie Sangita Ghosh fields DNA reader/photo-journalism student Ayushman Kathuria's queries with aplomb..

You started acting when you were 10. But newer actors have done more serials than you. Why?

I am extremely selective when it comes to my work. But then, I have been lucky too. I have worked with Hrishida (Hrishikesh Mukherjee), Basuda (Basu Chatterjee) and even Lekh Tandon. Tell me how many actors can boast about working with such legends? It's my own conscious decision to associate myself with good work. Like currently I am doing only 'Virasat'. I am not taking up more work, so that I can concentrate on it.

So you must spend enough time with your family then…
Of course I do spend a lot of my time with my family! Life, for me, moves beyond acting. I relax and at the same work frenetically when required. I can proudly say that I am one of the few actors who have done the right amount of work – and quality work.

How do you justify the controversial bikini shoots you did for a magazine earlier?
Long before I did the shoot, I wore a swimsuit in a serial called 'Suhana Safar'. I don't think there's anything wrong in wearing a bikini or a swimsuit. Wouldn't it be stupid if I wore a sari and jumped into a swimming pool?!!

Doesn't your bold approach land you in controversies often?
It's fine with me. If the media chooses to write controversial stuff about you, you can't stop them. It's not that I love controversies or thrive on them; I avoid them. Positively written stuff inspires and encourages me.

Is Indian television still too traditional in its themes?
Actually, the mindset is such. Indians are traditional people and that's the way of life.

Have you thought of trying your luck in Bollywood?
Cinema is definitely larger than life and every actor wants to be there eventually. But for me, television is a lifeline. It offers good work, is a good place to work in and nowadays you get good money too. It gives me a high and I'm pretty content with it.

Last year, your fans from Pakistan would call you up endlessly at night. Have those calls stopped?
They have doubled (laughs). My fans literally harass me, but their love makes me work harder.
