Chapter 13
Geet stretched her arms, raising up slowly from the bed, before folding her hands and saying a prayer to Babaji. She was so thankful for Savitri's understanding nature. When she had questioned about college the previous day, Geet had felt a pang inside her heart. She so much wanted to start her studies again, but she couldn't give up this opportunity to help her friend. As if sensing her dilemma, Savitri had suggested a one month trial, after which they could reevaluate the situation.
Geet loved that idea, especially as she didn't know how much money she would need for the private investigator. She hoped that it wouldn't be too much, and maybe by the end of the summer, she could quit the job and start back to school. It all depended on what she was able to find out today. Her intension was to speak with Pinky, and see if maybe she could help her find a good agency to visit during her lunch hour.
Not wanting to waste time, as she had to be at the office early, Geet quickly got ready for the day. Looking through her new clothes, she picked a nice green suit, with gold trim, hoping that it would make a good impression on her new boss. After braiding her hair and putting on some earrings, it was time to go. Picking up her bag, she left her room quietly, wanting to be extra careful in avoiding Maan.
As she crept down the stair she could hear hims talking on his phone. "Yes, Munshiji, I received the fax and sent it back to you. Let me know when the details are finalized. Once we get the Chopra project, this one will be my next. I want to start the preliminaries as soon as possible, so I don't want any delays."
Maan's back was to her, so she was able to slip away without his notice, heading down the corridor that connected the outhouse to the main building. To Geet's surprise, Savitri was already waiting breakfast for her. They talked while Geet ate, with Savitri telling her to call home if she had any problem, or needed any advice. When it was time to leave, Savitri requested that Nakul call their driver. Nakul came back shortly, saying that Maan had already left for the office with Mohan.
"Alright, then call Rajesh. He can take Geet."
"Madam, Naintara Ma'am already took Rajesh out."
"What? Without my permission! That girl is just unbelievable!"
Geet, who didn't like the way Savitri was getting upset, said,"It doesn't matter, Dadima. I can take a taxi." Savitri didn't like to hear that, but Geet eventually convinced her with the excuse of being late.
"Alright, Beti, but I want you to have this before you go."
Geet looked down at the money that Savitri had placed in her hand, exclaiming, "What's this, Dadima? I can't take this."
"It's shagun, Beti, for your first day at work. And you can take it. It's only Rs. 101, take it."
With Savitri insisting, Geet took the money, as well as the lady's blessing. Then, before she could truly think about the situation, or get scared, she was leaving for her first day at the office. While she sat in the back of the taxi, Geet tried to remember the different bits of advice that Savitri had given her on how to be a secretary. She practiced saying the phone greeting, and also the types of things she should say to clients. Before she knew it, she was at KC, where Pinky was waiting to take her to the HR department.
"Pinky, do you think you could help me with something on our lunch hour?" she asked as she began filling out the forms.
"Well, I can try," replied Pinky as she bit into an apple, "just as long as it's not office work."
"No, it's not anything to do with the office. It's personal."
"Oh, well, then tell me about it later. Don't ever talk about anything personal when you're in the office. MK doesn't like it. 'Only professional, never personal', is his motto."
When they were finished, Pinky escorted Geet back to the fourth floor, as she was new and didn't know her way around very well. Frequently the office workers stopped to ask Pinky who the new girl was. She was glad that Geet was too busy checking out the office to pay attention to the various staff reactions. Pinky was sure that after some time the office would warm up to her friend just like they had when she was new.
Of course, there was nothing to be done about Tasha, who Pinky could hear to be declaring Geet late. Though she gave a fitting answer to the "Silly me" girl, Pinky cheerfully stood up for her friend. Even when Sasha ordered her out of the office, she made sure to give Geet's hand a reassuring squeeze, along with a smile.
Geet had known that the first day would take getting used to, but she didn't expect that she would start out with two of the rudest girls she had ever met. They wouldn't even explain what HOD meant, as if it was somehow beneath them to do so. It felt a little bit like starting her secondary schooling all over again. At least there was Pinky who would help her.
Geet tried to use the phone to call reception, but Pinky didn't seem to be picking up. The first try didn't bother Geet, but after she had tried three times, she started to worry. Not only did she need Pinky to explain about the HOD thing, but she also needed to know what the Chopra file was, and where it might be. It seemed that whoever the previous secretary had been was a very unorganized person. None of the files were in any sort of order, and their contents seemed to be mixed up.
"If Pinky doesn't answer me soon, I am likely to loose my job on the first day, no in the first fifteen minutes."
"Hah, hah, hah, hah," she heard from behind, causing her to jump a little in fright.
"That's pretty funny, Geet. It seems like you've already figured out the typical reaction of MK when something isn't completed on time. I came to let you know that MK wants a department head meeting called in ten minutes. I thought that no one would have informed you, that's why I came."
"Yes, Sir. Sasha Ma'am already told me. I was just trying to find the Chopra file that MK wants," stated Geet.
"Geet, that file is not here, it's in MK's office."
"Oh," replied Geet, feeling foolish. Then she smiled and said, "Thank you, Adi sir. Sasha Ma'am told me it was in these files."
"Well, Sasha would not have known the location of that file, as I put it on MK's desk myself. Geet, there is also an HOD list with the file, including all the phone numbers. I thought that would make things easier for you on the first day."
Geet again thanked Adi, who left saying not to mind anyone's behavior, as they were all agitated by MK's early presence. Geet pondered Adi's words as she walked the few feet over to her bosses office. It seemed that this MK was some kind of tyrant, with similar behavior to Maan. That must be why he was working for Khurana Constructions, as his personality seemed to resemble that of the man in charge.
Maan couldn't believe that his new secretary, the person that according to Adi was supposed to be very trustworthy and hardworking, was late. Striding down the hall to his office his wondered if he was going to have to call the meeting himself. Sometimes he wondered if having a secretary was worth all this bother. Something always seemed to be off about them. Either they seemed to stare at him all day, the qualified ones doing most of the staring, or they never looked at him because they were so incompetent that they couldn't even see a difference between his face and the floor.
With these thoughts in mind, Maan pushed open the door to his office, not expecting anyone to be there. When he felt his shoulder run into something he was shocked. The very next second he had an armful of warm flesh in his arms, trying to keep them both from collapsing onto the floor, even as papers fell around them like rain. Once he got a good look at the face belonging to the girl in his arms, Maan was doubly shocked. He had not seen her for more than two days, and if anyone had asked, Maan would have confidently stated that he had no idea what Geet Handa looked like. Yet there her familiar features were, her eyes looking straight into his, a mixture of shock and recognition also visible.
