Thanks for the info on the Shakti peeths. But if Sati immolated herself, this incident may not have exactly happened. Also, Shiva sent Virbhadra & Bhadrakali/Mahakali to punish Daksha, and didn't go himself, whereas the Shakti peeths origins suggest that he took her body and danced the tandava dance, which resulted in her remains being scattered on those 54 or 108 locations. Not possible if she reduced herself to ashes, or smoke.

Brings up another point - in the ACK Sati & Shiva, they showed that after reproaching Daksha, she stood where she was, invoked a mantra and reduced herself to smoke, and the Ganas were furious. Whereas in most serials, they show her stepping into the agnikund and cremating herself there.

I wonder what the original texts say? B'cos after Daksha was refitted w/ a goat's head, Shiva gave him permission to complete his yagna. But that would not have been possible if the Agnikund had Sati in it, as the serials show. However, if she cremated herself separately, then that kund could have resumed operation once the yagna was back up & running.

Kalabhairava, the fearsome aspect of Lord Shiva, is the God who is the protector of Benares. Once Brahma insulted Lord Shiva and his fifth head teasingly laughed at Lord Shiva. From Lord Shiva came out the Kalabhairava (Black Bhairava) who tore off the fifth head of Lord Brahma. On the entreaties of Lord Vishnu, Shiva pardoned Lord Brahma. But the sin of beheading Lord Brahma followed Kalabhairava everywhere. Also the head of Brahma stuck to him. To keep away the sin and punishment which were chasing him, Kalabhairava entered the city of Benares. The sin could not enter the city. Kalabhairava was made as the Kotwal of Benares. Kalabhairava rides on a dog. A pilgrimage to Kasi is not supposed to be complete without visiting the temple of Kalabhairava.

Another story identifies Kalabhairava with Veerabhadra who cut off the head of Daksha the father of Sathi Devi, when he insulted Lord Shiva. Sathi's body was cut into pieces and strewn all over India giving rise to Shakthi Peetas. Outside every Shakthi Peeta is the temple for Bhairava.

In another story, Kalabhairava is the form of Shiva who controls the growth and management of time. Whoever wants to spend, manage or ration their time in a proper manner should pray him.

He is also considered as the guardian of temples of Lord Shiva. After locking the doors of the temple of Lord Shiva, the keys are ceremonially offered to Bhairava.

This ashtakam is recited by the priests of the temple of Kalabhairava in Benares before blessing the devotee with a tap by the cane of Lord Kalabhairava.

^^^ This is given in Devipuran, in Mythology, there are many things, which can not be explained or understood today logically, but all these are important representatives of our faith. From DBSK, I've learned one thing, if the story is not original then, don't bother making any sense out of it but when original storyline is shown then just enjoy it because it strengthns my faith.

Got a few points.

1. I thought Veerbhadra was created from Shivji's Jata - hair... Correct
2. How is it possible after Sati's death, to finish the Yagya... in the same place she died, moments later, isn't that a little inconsiderate I doubt it was moments later, but rather days, if not months later. After all, it would take the Ganas time to get back to Shiva, then more time for Virbhadra to invade Daksha, some more time for Daksha's hordes to be defeated, then after he's killed, some interval b4 Vishnu & Brahma approach Shiva to have him forgive Daksha, some days or months b4 they find the first animal, then attach that head, and then Daksha apologizing and requesting to perform the yagna
3. If Sati jumped into the Yagya-kund, it wouldn't be possible to finish the Yagya anyway.
4. If she jumped into the Yagya-kund, wouldn't her body been burned to ashes... so then how can Shivji take her body and how could Shri Vishnu cut it up with his Sudarshan Chakra... if it was ashes... unless her body wasn't fully burned...

I agree on #3 & 4 - I think Varaali's explanation below makes most sense, which is why I asked. I now know that she didn't jump into the agni kund, or it would have been unusable for the yagna.

I know in one show they showed Sati immolating herself near the Yagya kund but not in it... can't remember it now... I recall them showing that in AS Ramayana, as well as in a past serial on YT.
