Occasionally someone has asked a question on the board and I've thought, "I should add that to the FAQ." Alas, the moment passed, I didn't write it down, and my memory of it lapsed.
So I'm turning to y'all for help: do you recall being puzzled by anything you glimpsed in the films that seemed to be a traditional or culture-specific practice? If it's not covered by the FAQ, by all means, post your question here (and if you've posted it elsewhere on the board, please re-post it here so I can include it in a future version of the FAQ)! Also, if anyone would like to respond to people's questions about a particular practice/custom/gesture etc., feel free to do so here. I admit I have absolutely no idea about the symbolic significance of the groom wearing a veil!
Please note that the FAQ is not meant to address questions about the films themselves -- i.e., questions about the actors and actresses, how or if X Khan is related to Y Khan, and so on. The FAQ is meant to address questions that would occur to total beginners or people completely unfamiliar with Indian cultures. For examples, consider the current FAQs:
What does it mean when you tug on your ears?
...or touch someone's feet?
...or press your palms together?
...or wave your hand over someone's head?
...or wear a bindi (AKA "dot") on your forehead?
...or wear red stuff in the part of your hair?
...or wag your thumb at someone?
...or put kohl on someone's lips or cheek?
...or wave a burning lamp on a tray?
...or lift only your pinky finger?
However, it's always possible that we could expand to addressing other stuff in separate FAQ sections (ie, fashion terms, etc.) provided there's a lot of curiosity about it. I can only judge that, however, by the basis of your responses...so fire away! Your responses will be much appreciated.
