Courting time: Feroz Khan

Now that Feroz Khan is planning a sequel to Qurbani with Kurbani, he has suddenly woken up to the fact that Universal Music has been using his music all along instead of HMV.

15-year-long chori

Says Khan, "I have filed a criminal suit against Universal Music. They have been using and exploiting the songs of Qurbani and Jaanbaaz for the last 15 years without my knowledge and license. It's like daylight robbery.

Such great songs created by me are being exploited without my knowledge and even without any consideration. When I sent them a notice, they didn't respond and that shocked me! To safeguard my interests, I am left without any recourse but to go to court."

Criminal suit

Why has he taken 15 years to take action against Universal? "That's because we were under the impression that it was HMV and not Universal, who had the rights to play our music. We had also misplaced 25 of our files in the office and assumed that the music rights rested with HMV. We had given HMV to play the music of some of our films like Dharmatma and others.

A couple of months ago, when we shifted office we discovered the missing files which clearly stated that Universal didn't have any rights to play the music of Jaanbaaz or Qurbani. Universal has been plagiarising our music without any impunity and this is criminal! That's why we have filed a criminal, and not civil suit. Right now, we have lifted all their cassettes and CDs from the market."

Hefty claims

Is he claiming compensation or royalties from the money that Universal has amassed over the years out of playing the songs? "Yes, we are definitely claiming compensation, though we are yet to finalise that amount," concluded Khan.http://ww3.mid-day.com/hitlist/2006/june/139814.htm
