Hi,

Those of us who are regulars in the SRGM must have seen Rajeev and Sanchali being accepted as Shagird by the great Ustaad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab. He has earlier made appearnce in the old SRGM hosted by Sonu Nigam and has trained many play back singers. It is really a matter of great fortune and pride for Rajeev and Sanchali to train under him. If I am not wrong presently Shaan is also training under him. So here is a snapshot of his life. I came across very limited information about him. So, if you have any more information, it would be great to know more about him.

Ghulam Mustafa Khan: The Guru

Born on March 3, 1931 at Budaun (U.P.) Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan is considered as one of India's most highly acclaimed vocalists. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan is heir to the lineage of Rampur - Sahaswan Gharana's legacy of Raagdaari tradition, and comes from a long line of accomplished stalwarts such as Ustad Wazir Khan, Ustad Bahadur Hussain Khan, Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan, Ustad Hyder Khan, Ustad Fida Hussain Khan, Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan, Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan and Ustad Waris Hussain Khan of revered memory.

Music came to him from the first breath of his life, his family having a long line of musicians. His father, Ustad Waris Hussain Khan, first initiated him into music. He was later groomed by Ustad Fida Hussain Khan and Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan. Ghulam Mustafa's academic interest in ancient Indian music (Jaati Gayan) led the Ustad to carry on extensive research under Acharya Brahaspati. This move added yet another dimension to his singing.

Ghulam Mustafa has rendered compositions from ancient treatises like Bharat Natyashastra by Bharat Munni, Brihat Deshi by Matang Rishi & Sangeet Ratnakar by Sharang Dev. He is considered to be the only artist who has the knowledge and has performed 'Jaati Gayan' (Ancient music) after seven hundred years! The Ustad's performances pulsate with rhythmic appeal, tayyari and melodic content. He has composed original raags on his own, and adorned many award winning films and documentary films with his music. A Guru is recognised by the talented shishyas he moulds. His illustrious disciples include Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt and Amit Kumar besides many others. In this regard, the Ustad has an impressive roster that boasts of vocalists and playback singers.

Aamir learning music?

Is Aamir Khan now learning music? Khan has been in the process of doing something different for a film, which he has been planning for long. The film would be directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar.

But what is interesting is the fact that Khan has approached a leading music guru and singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan to help him with the music. We are not aware of what transpired between Aamir Khan and Ustad, but the fact remains that the two Khans were discussing music for a long time. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan is incidentally planning to sing the Deepak Raga and record it in a music album. Immediately after the news came through, Aamir jumped at it and met Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. One does not clearly know what the whole thing is about. But we will surely keep you posted once we know. Incidentally the likes of Asha Bhosle, Hariharan, and even Alisha were all under the tutorship of the Ustad. And knowing Aamir Khan, we are sure that the news would be big enough for all of us to enjoy.

I hope one day you are able to.

Here is a little more information on him.

The founder of Sahaswan-Rampur gharana is Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan (1849-1919), son-in-law of Haddu Khan of the Gwalior gharana. Inayat Hussain Khan was born in Sahaswan and lived his professional life in Rampur. Rampur was an important centre of dhrupad singing, and together with the fact of Haddu Khan's teaching, there are definite influences of dhrupad, and the Gwalior gharana. Inayat Hussain Khan's two sons-in-law Mushtaque Hussain Khan and Nissar Hussain Khan continued the tradition. Modern exponents of the gharana Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan have added some new dimensions in the style to make it more complete. He also initiated the use of sargams popularized by Kirana and Patiala exponents. In keeping with the other broad characteristics and specialities of the gharana, Ghulam Mustafa introduced slow melodic elaboration or vistar and in the vilambit khayal and also sang it in the slower tempo preferred by most singers in the final quarter of the 20th century. The gharana is now represented by Ustad Rashid Khan.

I would be really surprised. I would think that guru of the calibre of Ghulam Mustafa Khan would not be able to train absolute beginners. It might be something else they were talking about.
