Tears+drama=TRPs

The tube is replete with prime time/afternoon shows with high octane emotional quotient to grab more eyeballs

Navya Malini

Its a small wonder where the tube has many fascinating tales to offer across various time bands. What makes the small screen today even more interesting is the way it is rediscovering content, thats a potent mix of different shades of emotional drama.
When the shows establish an instant connect,it yields dividends for the maker, agree many in the industry. This eventually has given rise to options aplenty for the ardent soap lover to indulge in a potpourri of emotions sometimes negative and sometimes positive. This is what is enabling shows garner more TRPs,feel many.
Sample this.We have shows like Bhagonwali... Baante Apni Taqdeer,Haar Jeet,Diya Aur Baati Hum,Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon,Chhoti Bahu-2,Yahaaan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli,Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai.Not to mention the TRP trippers Saath Nibhana... Saathiya,Balika Vadhu and Uttaran.Theres no happy ending in the chapters as there will be a chain of events with sagas of struggles in store.
So what makes tearjerkers and emotional dramas give the non-fiction and reality shows a run for their money Shades of drama, seems to be the unanimous answer that the industry has to offer.Majority of Indian TV viewing audience comprises women, who enjoy watching emotions and drama because they relate to it, says actor-producer JD Majethia. The tried and tested formula in soaps is no longer relevant today because the existing television viewer no longer finds any novelty in it, he adds.
While the leading ladies swirl and swing in the sea of emotions on the soapbox, the drama gets intense with sidetracks and even more dramatic twists.Actor Ragini Khanna says,One should not generalize shows as tearjerkers. There are of course shows with high emotional dramas. At the same time, offering content with a mixed bag of drama and comedy also works, feels a section of the industry.Apart from drama, humour also has a place in our shows, says director Gorky. What keeps the momentum going in the shows is the drama which keeps the audience thinking about something dramatic is going to happen next, he adds.Drama and tearjerkers ruling the roost on TV today can be attributed to the format, say industry insiders. While producer Asit Modi feels that the Indian telly viewer has options aplenty to get entertained. The audience is tired of long running shows and is looking towards experiencing difference.Every other show on TV is not a tearjerker. And in todays context, every show comes with a USP which helps leverage eyeballs, says Modi. Many feel that TV throws a major challenge for other genres such as action and thrillers to sustain for long. And it is here that a maker finds a safe bet with emotional social dramas.Having to work in a five day format makes it very difficult to s u s - tain anything apart from drama, says Gorky adding,Overseas, you have the concept of a 26 episode series like what one saw in 24,Dexter et al which come up with another season after a break. That is not the case here.At the same time, international shows like The Bold & The Beautiful had only drama to offer the viewer. Majethia says,Introducing more shades of drama that will let the viewer feel, the protagonist is undergoing lot of turbulence and seeking the emotional support of the mother or a sister, retains the interest in a particular show. And it is where these shows are doing well. So,as long as the trials and the tribulations of the protagonists do the talking, the shows can bank upon the tears to garner more TRPs.navya.maliniyv@timesgroup.com

Thanks for sharing.

The articles states the truth. A decade back, tv shows relied more on content based formula and hence the quality of shows were never compromised on...however, now it has become more emotion+drama oriented which is purely done to garner more eyeballs (TRPs). Most of the stories start off well with some substance for the viewers...but after a point, it looses track and then everything happens on the basis of TRP! Crying, shouting, over the top drama are all preferred to simple stories now...coz that means more people. Indian audience do like drama, and in some way or the other they relate to those incidences. Their is never a moment of respite in the lives of characters, because then audience won't watch it. The show that manages to capture the perfect essence, one that is able to strike a chord with the viewers goes on to become huge hit.

Channels are more money oriented now than quality oriented, since Television Ind. has become a major revenue creating business.

Will TV do anything for TRPs?

TNN | Dec 10, 2011, 12.00AM IST

Shaina NC writes an open letter to TV channels about the kind of programming these days

"The latest season of the reality show Bigg Boss now has an adult entertainment star as one of its contestants. This entry has quite expectedly confused the viewers, especially since the last entrant into the house was a social activist who sought to provide solace to the 'emotionally disturbed' inmates. To me, it seems that broadcast media would go to any extent to garner TRPs, even if that entails confusing the daylights out of an unsuspecting audience.

The entry of the adult entertainment star on the reality show has obviously elicited polarised opinions. There is one popular belief that this is a huge step towards maturity of the audiences and indeed of the Government that has sought to determine forever what is 'wholesome' for the audiences. A larger group believes that an adult entertainment star on a show broadcast during primetime is downright sacrilegious. Their viewpoint is predicated on the assumption that children constitute a significant proportion of primetime audience, and thus their impressionable minds would be susceptible to inappropriate content. This part of the population conveniently forgets that all content is available at the click of a button on the Internet. However, there's more to the issue.

In this country, cinema (and television, in the past decade or so) has traditionally determined many aspects of popular culture. For decades, it's widely believed that cinema and TV mirror reality and set up the debate on elements of social and cultural transformation. Regressive content, especially related to women issues, has been the general hallmark of programming. This has obviously distorted, quite severely, our attitudes towards sex and intimacy, and nourished our penchant for objectification of women. While this is a worldwide phenomenon, the problem seems more acute in this country.

My objection to the so-called 'progressive' step taken by the channel is a simple premise. One, it enhances the problem of objectification of women, especially in our socio-cultural context where perceived superiority of men and other such antiquated notions have created a climate of extreme insecurity for women. Such beliefs and practices are causing more harassment to women, and incidents of crimes against women are going through the roof. Two, my firm belief is that introducing controversial people on the reality show is a mere attempt to drive up the ratings of the programme. There's a near-perfect positive correlation between programme ratings and advertising revenues. Is the channel even attempting to catalyse a transformation of long-held regressive attitudes and beliefs? I think not. While private channels are justified in taking calls that benefit their business, it's unfortunate that they don't realize their power to trigger off changes in the larger society. Catering to the voyeuristic tendencies of a sex-starved male audience blessed with distorted mindsets, can hardly be termed as responsible business practices.

But that's a topic for discussion another day."
