Part 19:
Khushi entered the class to be greeted by a din. She put her books and duster on the table and leaned against it, as she waited for the class to calm down. It took a whole 5 seconds for that to happen. Though she had been a lecturer for only 3 or 4 months, she had successfully made a mark on the students. They all respected her a lot, since she was probably the only lecturer, who was very friendly with them, inspiring them to make something of themselves. But she also knew where to draw the line. And all her students knew better, than to mess with her when she was on the other side of the line.
Khushi, with a lot of help from Aditya, had created a new life for herself in Bangalore. Her life was. . . . . Well, it wasn't what you could call a life. . . . . And it felt even more so, when Aditya wasn't around.
It was almost a year ago, when he had found her on the streets, unconscious. She still didn't remember who or what had hit her. She was walking on the street, lost in thoughts about how she had been betrayed by the man she loved, when she felt a gigantic force on her back, robbing her breath away, as she gave in to the darkness. She had woken to see the warm, brown eyes she had fallen in love with. But it wasn't Arnav there.
She then learnt that the boy who was a year younger than her, and who had saved her, was none other than Arnav's cousin. It seemed damn ironic now. She had been in the accident because of one Raizada. But the one to whom she owed her life to, was a Raizada too! She gave out a laugh without humor at the thought.
"You're doing that again, aren't you?? Stop brooding, Di" Aditya said Khushi was about to reply, when his phone rang. "Ha ma. . ." He talked into the phone, as he got up. He talked for a few more minutes, asking about everyone. Khushi strained her ears, curious to know about everybody too. If her mind had any true companions from the past year, it was her pain, and her guilt. She had cut all the means of communication from her whole family. That is, both the Guptas and the Raizadas.
She still couldn't hate Arnav for making her whatever she was today. She went through hell on a daily basis, both physically and emotionally. But she still couldn't even think of hating him.
"Bhai!!" Aditya exclaimed, still on phone, and Khushi felt her breathing stop. Her hands itched to snatch the phone away from Aditya, and listen to Arnav's voice once. She stopped herself by clenching her hands into a tight fist, tendons straining out. Fortunately, his conversation with Arnav didn't last for longer time. And Khushi relaxed as she saw Aditya cut his call.
After having dinner, Aditya left for his place, which was just a floor above her place. "Good night Di. . . You've done enough blank staring for today. Now sleep well... Okay?? I'm feeling very sleepy too..." Aditya said, as he stifled a yawn.
"You have graphics assignment to submit tomorrow. You remember, right?" Khushi asked, knowing fully well, that he'd have forgotten.
She watched in amusement, as his eyes went wide and he shouted an "Oh shit!!" and ran out.
Khushi was left to her thoughts once again.
*To avoid confusing you any further, the flashback will be in blue, from now on*
Khushi had wanted to sell her father's home in Bangalore, so that she could help her Babuji with the wedding preparations. When she asked Arnav regarding what rate she can expect, he had said, "I sell clothes, child. Not buildings. . . ." Watching Khushi glare at him, he had equivocated, "I'll inquire and let you know. . . ." And after he had asked around, he had told her an amount, listening to which, her eyes had gone round with shock. But he had made her think well before actually selling it, and she had thought she'd do it later.
Arnav continued his support for her in every aspect. When their marriage date was fixed for a day after four months, he promptly rejected it, as the tentative dates for Khushi's final semester exams would be during the same month. Khushi herself had forgotten about it! And so, it was decided that their marriage would be after six months.
But they had got engaged on the previous night of Akash and Payal's wedding. His mother's ring now adorned Khushi's ring finger on the right hand, as an engagement ring had made its place on the ring finger of her left hand.
Khushi had been the happiest person, reveling in the love of her Arnav. Arnav had finally let go, and had smiled, making all his family members the happiest, because he had finally found his love.
And finally, the day of convocation had come, leaving a mere one month more for their marriage. Khushi had been peeved that Arnav wouldn't be coming. She knew he would have come, if he could have. But she still was acting as if she would make him suffer a lifetime of servitude. She had smiled for the photograph that Akash had taken, posing with a finger pointed at her graduation hat, which had a bright yellow tassel hanging from it, and a grin on her face, because Akash had made some silly joke.
That had been the last grin that had come from her heart. . . . .
And then she had received an MMS. From Lavanya. Khushi stopped dead in her tracks as she saw image after image of Arnav in compromising positions with Lavanya. . . No!! This couldn't be!!! Khushi thought, as she called Arnav.
"Helllooo..." Lavanya's voice drawled on the other end. Lavanya and Arnav are together? Why is Lavanya answering his phone???!! Khushi thought...
Words failed Khushi. She stood rooted to the spot, as Lavanya told her that Arnav would always prefer someone more experienced to warm his bed. She also told her that Arnav liked the fact that Khushi was nave enough to think that she could satisfy him.
After hearing all this Khushi did what she did when she was distressed. She left. To Bangalore. But this time, she didn't go to her father's mansion. She saw through all the papers Babuji had handed her that morning, and realized she had one more place in Bangalore to call her own. A small two floored building.
Khushi had sold all the other assets of her father, and had made herself settle down in her new place. Not wanting to be discovered by anyone, especially not by Arnav, she even changed her name from Khushi Kumari Gupta, to Khushi Singh Raizada. Yes. She loved Arnav Singh Raizada. That was something she wasn't ashamed of. Though that didn't mean that she'd let Arnav take advantage of her love. Her mind still had difficulty in accepting the fact that he could be infidel. How could he break my trust as if it never mattered??!! Her mind wondered. ENOUGH!! One more voice in her head silenced her thoughts.
She was out to buy groceries when her accident happened. The hit had compressed her sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica, making her limp, so as to put as less weight on her left leg, as possible. But luckily she didn't have to limp always. Her leg hurt only when she was too stressed out. The pain varied from continuous, mild throbbing, to sudden shoots of pain, out of the blue, making her almost fall down. But luckily, Aditya was always around to hold her when she staggered under the pain.
In Delhi, someone stared at the graduation picture of Khushi as he felt a cold hand wringing his heart. His face dark with pain, as if he were burning at a stake. "Where ARE you, child??" his voice came in a broken whisper. . . . . . . .
