The doctor came within seconds. They escorted Rano to the cabin and the doctor checked her. She looked worried which made Rano and dadi worry as well. Dadi asked getting impatient, "What's wrong doctor?"
She replied shaking her head, "You're entering stage 2. It's still not late for the operation. Please try and understand. You need to get admitted."
Dadi asked, "What is wrong with her?"
Doctor replied, "Brain tumor." Dadi was shocked. She tried to reason, "But... she's so young!"
Doctor said, "And that is why it can be prevented. Early detection is a good thing. But now, she isn't agreeing on doing the operation."
Dadi asked Rano, "Daughter, why not? If this can be done then do it. If it's money problem, than let me help you!"
Rano shook her head. "No it's not about money. I'm getting married in two days. Today is my sangeet. I can't do this to my family right now. Their reputation is at stake. I can't'"
Dadi, "But tell them! They will understand. Your health is important. It shouldn't be neglected."
Rano was crying now and holding dadi's hand. "They will. But I don't want to steal their happiness."
Doctor said, "But Ms. Rano, please try and understand. It can get bad."
Dadi said then, "If you don't tell them, then I will." Rano jerked her head towards dadi and held her hand tight and pleaded, "No! Please'please don't tell them. Aapko meri kasam." She pulled dadi's hand on her head. Dadi was silent and had nothing to respond.
Rano cried. "Don't'" she was shaking from crying.
Dadi felt like she had to comfort her. She pulled her in a tight hug and consoled her. Patting her hair, she said, "Shh. I won't tell." After she stopped crying badly, doctor said, "I'm giving you medicines and that should help you till a week after marriage or so. But after that, please come."
She nodded and the doctor wrote down the names. Dadi said, "Give them to me. I'll make sure she gets them."
Both left and Rano said wiping her tears, "Aunty, I don't even know you. Why are you helping me?"
Dadi smiled and replied, "Bte, you don't need to know me to help you. You can get to know me. Now how are you going home?"
Rano replied, "I'll take a taxi."
Dadi shook her head. "Then no. come, I'll drop you. And do I get an invitation to a beautiful person's marriage?"
Rano laughed as dadi made the situation heavy. She nodded with a smile.

(Dadi's voice as she describes the next few days' events) "After that day, we met again at the marriage and I made sure she took her medicines on time. After marriage, I tried to convince her a lot. I tried to tell her that she had to get an operation done now. Her husband, Karan, was a very loving husband. He would have supported her but she kept on refusing. She was afraid if something happened to her. We did meet now and then and talked a lot over the phone. She started sharing all her little and big problems with me. I was happy for her but scared at the same time."
*Back to present*
"I could see that she was too. Just when I thought she would agree, the news of her pregnancy came along. That was you Geet. We went to the same doctor since both of us were scared if anything would happen to you. The doctor assured us that Rano's illness won't affect you in any way. After that, she wouldn't listen to me whenever I would talk about operation. Again, she was more worried about you then herself. I was proud of her and admired her thoughts. Somewhere deep down, I was hoping things will be perfect. If not now, than at some point."
Geet: "She'she had tumor and didn't tell anyone. All because of me!" She felt guilty. Yea sure she wasn't at fault. She was an unborn child at that time! But the decision was taken for her.
Dadi said, "Now you also don't start crying!!" Again, she was trying to control the sadness. Geet smiled at her taunting statement and asked for dadi to continue.
Dadi started, "Years passed with the same things. You were born and then a year old. After that, there was no more threat to anyone. I asked her to talk to Karan again. She said she would but kept on delaying it. Her health was getting worst. It had been 4 years to their marriage. I was surprised Karan didn't notice it. But then again, he would be in the office almost all day long. One day she came to my house. It was unexpected'"

*Flash Back*
Rano came in the door as soon as dadi opened it. She went in the living room looking much tensed. She started taking walks up and down the hall twisting her sari pallu. Dadi followed her with a confused look. She was pretending to bit her nail as she sat down. Then again stood up and started marching. Dadi was getting tired of her silence now.
What in the world! She barges in the house, that too this tensed and doesn't say a word!! No greeting, nothing!
Dadi said, "Enough!" Rano stopped in her tracks and turned around surprised at her loud voice. "What is up with you? Since the last 7 minutes, you've been marching from here to there. Did some army officer give you punishment or what?! Why are you marching like you're about to go on a war!!! Speak up woman."
Rano was very surprised by dadi's anger now. She was wide eyed. She always saw the calm dadi who would always control the situation and never get mad. "Dadi!!!"
Dadi said, "Don't look at me like that?! I am a person too. Even I get mad at times. Now spit it out."
She sat down and dadi sat as well trying to calm down. Gosh, this woman is so confused! Rano started, "Doctor has called us urgently. I don't know why. I'm worried. I've gone over all the different possibilities. And lately, even the headaches aren't that bad'."
Dadi gave her a glare. "If it was urgent than what are we doing wasting time here? Let the doctor think. Who told you to think! Now wait and get water if you want. I'll get my purse and be back in a minute."
Rano nodded obediently and sat there quietly without getting up till dadi came back again. As they reached the hospital, doctor said, "Now listen Rano. You have to get the operation done! You've delayed enough. If not done in next few days, then I won't be able to help you at all. You've always been thinking about your family. Now too, you can think about them only. If something happens to you, how are they going to live without you?!!!"
Both looked at the doctor with wide eyes. Yes, she was right at her position. But both were shocked to hear that after few days, nothing can be done. Dadi spoke on behalf of Rano, "You can't be serious!!"
"No Mrs. Khurana. Even you know that it's been delayed a lot. 4 years for God's sake!!"
Rano got up and ran out crying. Dadi looked at her leave and quickly said to the doctor, "I'm sorry. I'll try my best to bring her here. She's just too stubborn!" the doctor nodded with a worried look and watched dadi leave.
Rano had come out of the hospital and in the parking lot. She had let herself slide down right by the car. She was hugging her knees and crying badly at the same time. Dadi rushed to her and as Rano saw her, she got up and hugged her tight.
She spoke between sobs, "I don't want to die. I don't want to leave Geet. Leave Karan. I love them a lot. I don't'" dadi felt the need to scold her. They came at this point only because she kept on delaying. But this wasn't the right moment. Besides, dadi understood why she kept on delaying. She was afraid. Anyone would have been.
This was a critical situation though. It was a situation of now or never. She made her sit in the car and took her home.

PRESENT
Dadi continued as Geet was overflowing with tears, "I talked to her ad get her ready to go for the operation. She was understanding my point and I could see that. But the fear of losing you and Karan could be seen in her eyes'"

*Flash Back*
Rano: "But, what if something goes wrong?"
Dadi: "It won't. Think about nothing going wrong. Not on what will go wrong."
Rano: "I don't want to tell him and worry him if nothing is going to go wrong then. But what if he does? How will he feel then'?"
Dadi: "That's up to you to decide whether to tell him or not. I've promised a long time ago that I won't tell. I won't ever break that promise. Right now, you just go to sleep. I'll wake you up for dinner and also bring Geet here after she gets home."
Rano tried to object, "Karan will be waiting'"
Dadi said, "I'll let him know you both are staying here today. He won't mind. You just rest."
She nodded and slipped under the blanket closing her eyes as dadi left.

Present
"If I was at your house that day, then why did I not see you?" Geet asked.
Dadi smiled and replied, "Because I hid myself from you. If I came in front of you, it would have been hard for me to keep the promise."
"Then why are you telling this to me now?"
"It'll be better if I tell from where I left off?"
Geet nodded and dadi prepared herself. The hardest part to tell was coming'.
