The Marriage Premonition
Maanvi watched, trying her best not to hurl herself from the top of the staircase, as Jeevika, her life, her soul, her heart shook those golden thingies. Her hands moved downwards, but her eyes scanned the room frantically in various directions. Where are you Maanvi? they screamed while her lips hesitantly smiled down upon the girls sitting below her. Maanvi felt her suicidal tendencies increase as Jeevika moved to the next girl, that very annoying guest who had disturbed her last heartbreaking moment with her di and pulled her away to dance. How could she even think of dancing when she was perfectly aware of the disaster that would happen next?
Maanvi was not interested in being the next one to get married, but her heart ached to sit next to those girls, to have her di's benevolent smile shining down upon her. Soon, her sunshine would be stolen and her life would be cold and empty. Just a series of boring days and even more boring nights spent in boring Rishikesh till boring Beeji married her off to a boring husband. Just so boring. Maanvi knew that 'enthusiasm' would not figure in her dictionary once her di was taken away. If anything, she only hoped that stupid Soumini Bua would allow her to visit her di after marriage at least. If she didn't, suicide would soon turn into murder.
'Hey,' a whisper drawled its way into her ear, interrupting her thoughts. Maanvi felt goosebumps on her arm. Whoever hath dared to break this moment between her and her di again, be prepareth to die.
'Mujhe nahi dance karna,' she turned around to say childishly, then stopped. Virat was standing in front of her, his trademark half-smirk half-smile ever present on his cheeky-looking face. Die, stupid invader, die!
'Kya hua? My bhabhi's going pale with worry looking for you and you are standing here and clicking pictures. Not fair. You must go and participate in the rasam. As someone has been very wisely informing me,' he said, gesturing towards Shlok who was clinically observing the ceremony, 'all rasams must be performed or else Jeevika bhabhi will not truly belong to Viren Bhaiyya.'
'Just leave me alone,' she hissed, 'I know what's good for my di.'
He shrugged, making a face. 'Whatever. I don't think you're needed that much for any rasam anyway.'
Maanvi felt tears prick the back of her eyes. Viraat felt a bit confused. He'd only being taunting her, what was the need to cry? He decided it must be a girl thing, the whole 'my sister's leaving me forever' hog. Thank god his Viren bhaiyya was not becoming a ghar jamaai!
'Sorry,' he said, 'I was only joking.' She turned her face away, and as if he had been programmed to do so, his fingers inched out and grasped the tip of her chin, turning her face towards him. 'Look, you're very important okay? Bhabhi needs you.'
'But no one else does,' she said, her voice almost inaudible. He frowned. What the heck? Why was she behaving so touchy? There was definitely something more than the whole 'leaving me forever' thing.
'Maanvi, tu kahaan jaa rahi hai?' asked Vanshika, concerned. She knew that Virat was upset with Maanvi, but really, her son really had to stop making the poor girl cry so often. If anything, she positively adored her for having made her son sing again. 'Come here, beta. You should also sit down for the ceremony.'
'Of course, Maanvi, see what's happening!' Kadambari piped up. 'No one's getting lucky at Jeevika's hands. It would be a big abshagun! I think fate is waiting for you only ji! Just like Deepika in that Break ke baad song!'
Maanvi looked at Beeji, who was staring ahead with a stony expression on her face. But inside, a maelstrom of emotions was raging inside her. The Vadheras themselves were asking Maanvi to come. Besides, Soumini ji had been held up in marriage preparations, so she would be late. Perhaps Kadambari ji was right. Perhaps fate really wanted this special moment at Jeevika's hands to belong only to Maanvi. And besides, the ban was only on the shaadi. This was something else altogether.
She looked at Maanvi and her features softened. 'Come down Maanvi.'
Maanvi felt almost giddy with excitement. It took her all her self-control not to jump up and down and race down the stairs. She also felt a tiny twinge of hope. Perhaps this meant that destiny really did want her to be a part of her di's wedding, even if in a small way.
She went down and folded her legs, her face unable to conceal her eagerness. Jeevika smiled, and Maanvi felt all her burdens disappear and uplift themselves to another world altogether. Jeevika was the silver lining on her dark cloud. She closed her eyes, and waited with bated breath. Chan, chan, chan. Jeevika shook the golden things. Maanvi sighed. She could feel nothing on her lap. Perhaps even this moment was going to be unlucky for her.
Whatever. At least she had got to be a part of the moment. She opened her eyes, ready to get up and go, and for some strange reason, everything was blurry and only Virat's face in the distance came into view. He was gazing at her with a curious look on his face.
Chan. Jeevika's hands shook for a last time and the golden things felt with a soft plop into her lap. Everyone gasped, including Maanvi. What the hell? Virat only smiled.
