Part 11 :

Mayank came home in the evening and found that Varun was fast asleep. Nupur had woken up on his arrival and as he sat there, suddenly not knowing how to avoid Nupur now that they were alone to talk, he started reading a business magazine.

Nupur got his hint, she had seen this quite a lot in recent past. She smiled to herself for she knew him too well. She announced, "I'll get you tea and sandwiches"

Mayank looked up at her and found it strange that she was slightly smiling as she announced it, without any mock attached to it even though she must have got his hints. He felt a little guilty all of a sudden for his rudeness was not completely being reciprocated by her, not even once and that was making a difference to him.

Just last time when he was with her, she had been rude enough and even had tried to argue bitterly while he ignored discussions. And now, she was again being sweet, almost the way that made him weak and vulnerable to her. Her way of taking care of his things without him asking for those from her and with a smile on her face.?Now that was unexpected. Had she decided to opt out of the tussle? He didn't know how long will he be able to last in that case! But that still didn't solve what ought to.

Later, in some time he was busy in reading some important business strategy when he heard an – "AAA-" directed to his ears from kitchen.

He quickly got up and went inside where he saw Nupur was running a tap and had put her hand under the tap.

Mayank asked urgently, "What happened?". He always got worried when Nupur got into something like this. Yes, she was careless and that added to his worries that she may not be lucky enough everytime to get out in her own way. She had it in her to hurt herself every now and then while at some work. Whether it was while cutting veggies or while cooking or while handling something heavy or fragile, she somehow often ended up hurting herself. Not that it stopped her from opting for those, but still courage in her did not bring enough care in her that would relieve Mayank of alarms.

Nupur replied laughing, "Nothing, as usual I put my fingers in the hot griller and here I ended up burning it" Her laughter was combined with a frown. She had got used to this aspect of hers and what amused her was Mayank got all worked up at all this, every single time. She laughed a little at her carelessness and a little at Mayank's controlled but worried expression and replied, "Its fine!"

Mayank went ahead and took out a jug of cold water from the fridge and taking Nupur's hand from below the running tap, he immediately put it in the jug.

Nupur tried to argue, "Listen Mayank, it'll be fine in a while. Don't bother" She tried to be stiff suddenly. Though she was trying hard to present to him that all was fine with her, her anger on him suddenly re-surfaced when he showed care for her. It was not like when he felt fine, it was fine to come to her and when he did not feel so, she almost didn't exist. She wondered where all that 'care' had gone the other day when he had so brutally shouted at her for not wearing the seat belt. She tried to take her hand out of the jug while he was out there closing the tap and she again argued, "Let it just-"

She was soon cut short by his, "Shh!".

He again took her hand in his and pulling her out of the kitchen with the jug in his other hand, he made her sit on the couch and placing the jug on the center table he pushed her hand inside the cold water along with his.

Nupur was left stunned and surprised when she saw him bearing the chilled water along with her. Besides, he glared at her for not taking care of her again. She wondered if he had suddenly had a short term memory loss to react this way today?

Mayank glared even more when he realized her soft slender fingers were what he was holding now and how it gave a homely feeling to him.

Nupur had long forgotten her burnt hand now. His strong grip on her hand and care written all over his face is what all she could see now. Her anger had taken a back seat very conveniently. She had missed this so much in the recent past times.

The part of her hand where he held her, felt much more warm than the edges of her finger which had got burnt.

Suddenly, in a spur of the moment all her anger came back to her, she realized she was having such a severe mood swing today.All blames to Mayank!

Was all that he decided and did was fine? Was only he the one to decide whether to react to each other or not and when? She glared back at him and snatched her hand out of the jug while she announced, "That will do it. No formalities please"

Mayank again snatched her wet hand in his and looking at it turn all red he replied back,"Listen Nupur, there is no burn ointment at home at the moment and if you leave your skin affected, it'll turn all red" and he again pushed her hand in the jug without clarifying a word about formalities, she must know it was not and he knew her that well at least.

Besides one problem that they had, they were very much in connection with each other's thoughts, though Mayank had tried hard to present it to her and to himself that they were almost over, Nupur had taken it ahead too in her own way. And now, suddenly both of them wanted the same pretense in front of each other and still put it aside for themselves.

There was a long silence between them though, because of the same problem. It was like they hadn't talked in a long long time.

If she was extremely honest, Nupur found him very adorable today with this act. If not for her constant remembrance of the present situation, she would have been left in daze looking at him for an undefined moment and he would have surely earned at least one kiss. But right now, overlooking that, she was angry but still affected by his care. His face and eyes showed concern and she wondered how on earth had he been able to give her so much pain earlier? It was like feelings like this had hit her after long.

They both stole cold glances at each other not allowing their eyes to speak.

The cold water had now started to neutralize in temperature a little into an ambient temperature and the numbness of both their hands were wearing off too and it made them feel each other's hand's hold after so long. Did they miss it or what?

Nupur secretly thought of a weird idea, not believing that she was capable of thinking it, of risking burning herself completely for she could get Mayank completely then. Wanting to almost burn herself up for going this weird in thoughts, she didn't entertain this thought for too long though.

She realized being away from him had taken its toll on her in a bizarre manner, she kicked herself for being so mad for him.

Nupur found herself looking at Mayank in almost in an awe and composed herself immediately. Mayank didn't miss it completely though. He was stunned and a little surprised to see that look on her face coz he had almost ruled out that she might ever behave so with him again. Some credits for this consideration on his own self.

Just when Mayank felt curious enough by that look that he was about to say something, Varun came around rubbing his eyes after a nap and holding Mayank's cell phone, which he had kept on the side table, in one of his hands and said, "Dad, I want this Harry Potter 7 game downloaded in your phone, where do I find it?" and he suddenly saw Mayank and Nupur holding hands together in a water jug. He smiled wide and giggled and said, "Are you'll playing something?"

Mayank and Nupur both blushed a little, and laughed too when Mayank replied, "No, your Mom got herself burnt!"

Varun came towards them and asked, "Really Mom?"and glanced at her hand with a pout.

All Nupur could do is just smile and said, "Wounds are fantasies naa!"She knew it was a fact with kids, especially where they could apply bandages on them. She continued, "I'll get bandages and ointments and a little pain but will still be brave just like you are always, right?"

Varun smiled proudly at her words and said, "Yes!" and he couldn't help himself with playing with the water in front of him and he spilled a few drops of those on Mayank and Nupus faces startling them and making them feel fresh all the same.

Varun asked wrapping his arms around Nupur, "Mom, is it very painful?"

Nupur kissed his cheeks and said, "Not even a bit" and though she pulled him to sit in her lap automatically, she declared, "Okay now enough, you both go and get your game and I'll be just right"

Varun started pulling Mayank's arms at this declaration of Nupur but not before kissing his Mom for a thanks while Mayank nodded a 'yes' and turning back to Nupur, he did something which surprised even himself, putting Nupur's hair strands behind her ears while slightly brushing her behind her ears with his fingers as he did so, he said very softly and caringly, "Take care Nupur"

Nupur surely did know that she blushed hard and wanted to sue Mayank for doing so to her. What had happened all of a sudden to him? Was it all to present it in front of Varun or was it something else?

But whatever it was, she wanted to pray to God to seize it for her forever now. How she missed him?

After some tens of minutes when she was done with the water stuff, Mayank and Varun came to her with an ointment to cure her burn and she just saw earlier version of her family coming back to her. If only it was not an illusion!

Things hadn't still changed, she reminded herself but still sweetly smiled at their gesture and saw Varun coming up to her and gently put it on Nupur's finger. She pulled him again in her lap as he went on with his work and looked at him smiling with tears brimming in her eyes while he asked, "Mom, is it hurting now?" wanting to know that he made a difference to her.

She broke into an unmissable contented smile and said assuring, "You are where all my hurts stop my boy!"

Mayank had a similar question running through his mind 'was it all an illusion?' He never doubted her love for her son, all he didn't like was Varun was not her priority, just like he wasn't .

But all the same, his heart filled with adore too.
