What did you mean by Khushi had lost her marbles?...you meant her senses? And which dream are you talking about?

Ah, yeah; he keeps his promises but no way is Arnav going to turn soft all of a sudden. I'll kind of not like him if he changes that way :) He'll still remain gruff and uncaring and occasionally rude but he'll just be silently caring along with it too :) She didn't tell him about the stars; he just thought she'd feel closer to her parents if she was able to look at the stars so he made that arrangement :)

Yeah, losing someone's marbles means they've gone mad :) The dream is one she had been having the past week; of Arnav proposing to her by the poolside; I thought I had described it in the beginning of the chapter? One minute, let me check... yeah, I'd mentioned it in detail at the beginning of the ninth chapter. It'll come up again soon enough :)

A/n: I know, I know; a really quick update. I couldn't stop myself; seeing the promo kind of triggered my muse, you could say. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 11: Stepping In

"I've administered the medicine, Madam. He should be fine in a few hours; though its better if he takes it easy for the next few days," the Doctor finished his observations and Khushi could see the defiance in Arnav's eyes behind his back; he wasn't resting even a second longer.

"Okay, Doctor," Khushi smiled and he turned to Arnav. "But, Mr.Raizada, I don't understand how this occurred. Your secretary knows that you're diabetic, doesn't she?"

"She resigned," Arnav replied curtly and the Doctor nodded, "Look after yourself Mr.Raizada; I know you're a rather busy person but health is still important. It would be better to keep people around you informed about your health conditions," he said as a last shot and left, unaware of Khushi chuckling. Arnav Singh Raizada confessing to his employees that he was diabetic; yeah, sure; she could totally see that happening.

"We can leave in an hour, Arnavji," Khushi replied assuringly and Arnav gave her a condescending look. "You can go wherever you want; I have a teleconference in a few hours; tell Di that I'll be late."

Arnav tried standing up and managed after a few failed attempts; Khushi had half a mind to help him but stopped herself knowing he wouldn't appreciate it. Walking to the table near which she was stood, Arnav indicated with a nod of her head to move away from his path; Khushi stayed put.

"Khushi, there are times to test my patience and this isn't one; move aside. I have a presentation to make in three hours; whatever it is you want to argue with me about, it can wait." Khushi huffed before she walked upto where he was standing and said, "Arnavji, you need to rest. You are in no condition to attend a meeting, much less make a presentation."

"Khushi, I know what I can and canot do very well. I'm no weakling; I can…" Khushi cut him off; she knew all his macho talk by heart by now.

"I know you can Arnavji; but I promised Di I wouldn't let you exert yourself and I intend to follow through," Khushi replied sternly, making Arnav curse under his breath.

"You told Di?" he asked, incredulity apparent in his voice, "Great, just great."

His murderous eyes made her back track, "I… I was frightened; you were unconscious and weren't reacting at all. I had to do something!" she replied defensively, making him halt.

"Fine; never mind that; I'll manage with Di. Now you leave this place and let me deal with the teleconference," Seeing Khushi's stubbornness he spoke in a deadly whisper, "Khushi, I am not losing this deal because you think I'm not well enough. Its an important meeting for me and I'm not going to give it up; the presentation must be made."

Khushi felt conflicted; but only for a second. She stood straight and firm as she said, "I'll do it."

Arnav stood still; surely, Khushi was kidding. Seeing her expression remain firm, he sighed, "Khushi, stop this act. Let me work; for the last time, move aside."

"No; I'm offering you a solution. You can rest and I can do the presentation for you; both our priorities will be fulfilled." Seeing no way out, Arnav nodded. Turning away from her, he called Akash to inform him that his 'secretary' would be making the presentation since he was called elsewhere for a matter of urgency.

Damn, I'll kill him. If he smirks at me one more time, I'll kill him Khushi fumed as she looked at Arnav who was lying on the couch with his eyes closed. She could see that infuriating bend of his lips occur often and knew he was having fun seeing her struggle. I'll show him she thought resolutely and immersed herself in the file once again, a little relieved when the figures she saw on the page appeared familiar.

"Do you remember all this?" Khushi asked him and Arnav nodded, "Its my company's figures; if I don't know them, who will?" Huffing, Khushi turned to the data again, though she couldn't help but be a little impressed.

I'm going to panic; I'm going to mess it up; I'm done for; Arnavji will kill me were the line of thoughts running through her head as she sat before the computer screen, hyperventilating. There was barely a half hour for the meeting and she was on the verge of breaking down.

Arnav was seated before her and seeing the expression on her face, decided it was time he pitched in and helped. He had had enough amusement watching Khushi alternately pay attention to the file and give him dangerous looks when she thought he wasn't noticing. "Khushi, Khushi!" only his raised voice caught her attention and she turned to him with eyes blank with fear.

"Khushi, listen to what I'm saying carefully, okay? These people who you're going to be facing; just imagine them as fools," Seeing Khushi's wide eyes, Arnav chuckled, "Trust me, it works. Think that they know nothing, okay? And if that doesn't help, look at Akash while speaking. He's going to be there and I know a familiar face can help you calm down. Even if you do forget things, I'm here to remind you, okay?"

Khushi nodded, a little courage seeping into her system. Arnav was quite recovered now; he could have attended the meeting but for the way he looked. He still looked tired and drawn and of course, Arnav Singh Raizada couldn't appear as anything less than calm and collected and perfect looking so he had opted to give her the chance. And I won't mess up. For the first time, Khushi felt her confidence return back and she nodded and smiled at Arnav.

"I'll be back," Arnav left the room, leaving Khushi to her thoughts. Arnav's mobile, which had been on the table rang and when it appeared that Arnav wasn't appearing anytime soon, Khushi picked it up. Seeing the caller id show Akash's name, she attended the phone, "Hello?"

"Khushiji? You are attending the phone? What happened to Bhai?" Akash's tensed voice sounded from the other side.

"He has gone down, Akashji. Why, is something wrong?" Khushi asked, half hoping that he'd tell her that the meeting had been cancelled. No such luck.

"I wanted to know who this new secretary is; I didn't know Bhai had appointed a new one so soon!" Akash's voice was thick with disbelief; whether it was about the secretary or about her competence, Khushi didn't know.

"I'm actually doing the presentation, Akashji," she replied in a low voice and there was complete silence on the other end.

After a few seconds, Akash's voice came through, "Oh, sorry Khushiji; I was a bit surprised that's all. Given the history between Bhai and you…"

Khushi nodded, "I know; I just hope I don't fail." Akash chuckled on the other side; collecting himself, he said, "Khushiji, if he didn't trust you, Bhai would never have agreed to letting you do this important a presentation…" a little commotion was heard after which Akash's voice was heard again, "I'll call in a few minutes to set up the teleconference link, Khushiji."

But even after Akash had called a second time, Arnav was yet to be seen; Khushi was beginning to seriously panic. Her throat was parched dry and no amount of water helped; her fingers were hopelessly tangled and she was afraid she'd start crying any minute, "Khushiji…" Akash's tense voice sounded from the other side; they were starting to run late; not a good impression.

"A few seconds, Akashji…" Khushi said, hoping against hope that Arnav would appear. Devi Maiyya, send him here, please. The telltale sound of boots made her breath even; Khushi closed her eyes in relief.

"Arnavji, where had you gone? I was so…" she stopped as she turned and saw what he held in his hand; her frown turned into a smile and she looked at him gratefully. Standing up from her place on Arnav's chair, she almost ran to where he was stood and grabbed the idol from him.

"Where did you…" Arnav waved his hand and said nonchalantly, "Di placed it downstairs on the day the office was opened. I thought it might help you." He took it from her and placed it behind the laptop so that the delegates wouldn't be able to see it though it would be in the line of Khushi's vision.

He took the phone from her hand and asked Akash to set up the connection. Khushi sat on the chair, the file on her lap away from the lens; just in case she needed it. Arnav sat in front of her as promised and gave her a nod of support. The meeting began.

I never trust someone who has betrayed me once his words echoed in Khushi's ears and she hoped she wouldn't join that list.

"You were brilliant, Khushiji! The delegates loved the way you spoke; a relief from the monotonous way presentations are made they said. I'm sure this will turn out well for the company. Congratulations!" Khushi let a sigh of relief; at least she hadn't created a loss for anyone. Before she could reply, the phone was taken from her hand.

"Were they too disappointed?" Arnav's sharp voice sounded on the phone and after five grueling minutes and a few looks in her direction, Arnav cut the call.

Khushi, who had been awaiting a word from him, any word at all, was left disappointed when Arnav merely closed his laptop and took it with him. He was at the stairs when he looked back, "Are you coming or do you plan on standing there forever?"

Jolted back into reality, Khushi followed him, all the while muttering under her breath Once a Laad Governor always a Laad Governor. No need to say thank you; that would be expecting too much but he could at least not look like he disapproves! Or does he? Who knows what's running through his mind? He's probably thinking up all the ways she could have done it better; always finding faults with her, isn't he?

"Enough!" Arnav's sharp tone made her realize that she had been speaking out loud. Oh, Devi Maiyya, is he going to leave me in the middle of the road again? Khushi thought as she looked out and saw the lonely streets. Thankfully, the car kept going.

After a few minutes' contemplation, Khushi spoke what she had wanted to for almost a week, "Thanks."

"What for?" Arnav asked curtly, his eyes not straying from the road once.

"For… for the paint and the stars and…" Before she could say anymore, Arnav cut in, "There's no need for it; my room is in the same corridor as yours. I just didn't want you to disturb my sleep at night because you weren't able to sleep."

Khushi wisely shut her mouth after that; there was no use thanking someone who wasn't magnanimous enough to accept it.

Anjali was pacing the drawing room tensely and Shyam was trying desperately to calm her down when Khushi and Arnav entered the house. Anjali rushed to where Arnav was stood and after nearly suffocating him with her hug, turned to Khushi. "Thanks Khushi; if you hadn't been there, I have no idea what would have happened!"

Hugging her tightly, Anjali's eyes shed a few tears, making Arnav uncomfortable, "It was nothing big, Di. My new secretary didn't know I was diabetic and gave me coffee with sugar in it. I hadn't eaten since morning's breakfast and the slight sugar intake made my blood sugar shoot up. Nothing more; don't fuss, please."

"Oh hush, Chote; you never look after your health. Its always I'll take care, I'll take care. Look how you've taken care of yourself; you're looking so faint! Now you'll rest and recover. No office for at least a week. I've spoken to the Doctor and he says you need to be monitored for a few days at least," Anjali reprimanded Arnav; he had been silent for the first part but objected wildly to the last part of her words.

"I will not let you go anywhere, Chote!" Anjali spoke in a firm voice; a voice Arnav knew he couldn't cross. Seeing the disheveled state of him made Anjali melt. In a voice that was pleading, she said, "Chote, I can't take risks with your health; I can't keep wondering if you're okay and if your Secretary remembered to give you sugarfree coffee or not…"

"What do you want me to do, Di?" Arnav asked, fed up with being pushed around by Anjali. He needed to find a solution they could both agree on and he wasn't coming up with anything.

"Find someone I approve of for the post of your secretary. Some one, who is familiar to the family, knows you well and is efficient too." Anjali challenged; Arnav knew there was no way he could find someone like that in a few hours. It would give Anjali the few days she asked. Arnav felt cornered and like a caged lion, began looking around for a solution.

Arnav, frustrated with his Di's words, looked (more like glared) at the source of this problem. She just had to go and call Di and make her panic, hadn't she? Why couldn't she have stopped her blabbering mouth from telling Di everything; and Di took her words to heart like it was some testament. An idea occurred to him; this just might work…

A strange light glowed in his eyes when he turned to Anjali, "Will Khushi do, Di?" he asked, looking straight at her.

There was silence in the room as people registered what Arnav had said. Before Shyam could oppose, Anjali's face broke into a wide smile, "Of course, Chote! With Khushi at your office I'll have nothing to worry about. What do you say, Khushi?"

"Anjaliji?" Khushi was about to say something when Arnav cut her, "Di and I were discussing about helping your family out financially. This would ensure that; I'll pay you the salary I'd been giving Lavanya which should be sufficient. I'm sure this would appeal to you more than teaching an unwilling student about Indian culture."

With the truth thrown at her in that practical a fashion, Khushi could say nothing to retort. If she didn't agree to this, Anjaliji would help her family anyway and she'll feel indebted. Better she worked and got her salary. Her dignity pushing her, she nodded, agreeing.

"Good; you'll start your work tomorrow," Arnav retreated to his room abruptly, leaving Khushi stunned. What had she gotten herself into?

"There's a luncheon this afternoon and we'll be attending," Khushi nodded at Arnav's words and, taking it as a dismissal, walked to the door. "Another thing; you don't have to come running to my room each time I ask for a file. Send it through someone else. You're my Secretary, not the office peon; you may go," Khushi walked down the stairs, confused. Had he reprimanded her or did he care about her status in the office?
