The Pitfalls of Societal Pressure

I think it is pretty incredible that on Star Plus (this is the first show that I have seen on it), we are getting to see the ugly side of societal pressure of marriage. Both protagonists are being pressured into marriage because of "what the neighbors" think.

ASR, while diving into his marriage to La to run away from Khushi, also serves up a tight slap in the face of the judgemental neighbors taunting Nani at the party. Ultimately, it is a marriage of convenience and of saving face.

Much more obvious is the engagement of Khushi and Shyam and how we as a society are so quick to judge and so narrow-minded about men and women and relationships, that we are willing to push people to give up their lives for the sake of our family's honor, dreams and feelings.

There is an indirect message here isn't there? That marriage should not be seen as an escape of any sort - whether it be for izzat or scrutiny. Getting married to the wrong person can kill your spirit.

Do you think the SP audience gets this point? Or am I being overly caffeinated this morning. 😆

Hey Anu!
Nice take!
But I don't think ASR agreed for marriage for neighbor's sake...Considering the fact, others opinion doesn't worth a damn for him...He cud hav told them off...So I think its just 2 run away from Khushi... But yeah! he cannot be there every time to answer back...I m confused😕

And Khushi-Shyam-, This track is irritating and completely irrational for me
I mean where was buaji's honor when she made him tenant , A graffiti on her wall and she goes to the extent of dragging her out and demean her in front of strangers at the top her lungs...
Y only Kh's name, payal s also very much single (Bua wud hav been a better option though)

Anyways dat was a complete rant...
But the message is passed may b unintentionally😆

wait, i thought ASR agreed to the marriage because of khushi and not becuz of the neighbours (he never cared about what the society thought, and that part of neighbours nagging was added just so he could come in at the right moment after battling it out with K??) .. lol, i am more confused now.. my first SP too.. if and all he did that becuz of khushi, kudos guy!! for doing this "i am a self-made man, why should i care about the society?" attitude..
about this bua lady, i was always of the thought that she needs to give khushi more power to her own desicions because she earns for herself, more so she earns for the family... and its her own marriage..
i hate this emotional attayachar she keeps doing that "tumhaare babuji ke khushi ke liyye".. if she wants to REALLY see the babuji happy, she'd have first asked a yes or no from him; a head nod would do.. she heard shya and went for the go, like he is babuji's alter ego!!

I know ASR didn't do it for the neighbors
"while diving into his marriage to La to run away from Khushi"...but it did give his family a nice "out".

@cinders...us, on the "same page" again...!!!!!!
@Anu: good discussion over cyber coffee *sipping java*. Agree with Sharmi here! Besides, the SP audience is looking for drama and hardly care for the message, I feel! But the sad reality is that despite all the progress and liberation, marriages are still fixed due to social pressures. Marriages of compromise rather than convenience are still a big fact of our society.

Then I ask why SP has shows like Maryada and Pratigya which initially were supposed to tout a social message, if the audience doesn't care for one? (I don't watch either , but this is what I have heard).

I know our society really does feel that just get married, to anyone, someone - just so we can say you are married. 😕

Awesome post Anu 👏

I find it pretty intriguing that two diverse people like ASR and Khushi had to bow down to societal pressure. ASR and Khushi belong to different sections of society but regardless of their social differences they are thrown into the same situation.

ASR's announcement of marriage was his way of escaping his true feelings for Khushi. But if those neighbors didn't taunt nani and La, ASR would not have thought of marriage with La.

Khushi on the other hand was deeply hurt by ASR's words. But she didn't consider getting married to Shyam because she was heartbroken. She and her family was taunted by the neighbors, then she was pressurized by her own family and was forced to feel guilty for her father's condition. That's when she remembered ASR's words and gave her nod to the marriage. But if the whole graffiti fiasco hadn't happened, would she agree for marriage despite being heartbroken? I don't think so.

So yes societal pressure acted as a catalyst behind there decisions.

As far as SP audiences is concerned, it is debatable. SP caters to a wide range of audience. People of different age groups, diverse social backgrounds and different sensibilities watch this show.

So definitely the interpretation of the situation or the subtle message delivered by the cv's will be different.

But you raised a very good issue. Good job.
