Part 16

Maan walked towards Daadima and Arnav and knelt down next to Daadi. He looked into her eyes and spoke in firm and clear yet calm words.

Maan: Daadi main jaanta hoon ki aap chahti hai ki main jald se jald shaadi kar loon. Par kya aapko lagta hai ki main bina wajah shaadi ke liye inkaar kar raha hoon? Kya aapko sach mein lagta hai ki jis ladki ko aapne chuna hai woh iss ghar ke layak hai?

Daadi: Kya baat hai Maan? Aakhir Geet mein kami kya hai?

Maan took a deep breath in.
Maan: Woh iss ghar mein adjust nahi ho paygi Daadi. He just said it.

Daadi: Bekar ke bahaane mat banayiye Maan. Aapko toh ghar mein kissiki parwah hai nahi, par humme Khurana khandan ki parwah hai!! (She said so with tears in her eyes.)
Hum aakhri bar puchh rahe hain Maan, aap Geet se shaadi kar rahe hain ya nahi? Hum'.

Savitri Devi fainted saying this. But Arnav on time caught her and lied her down on the bed. Maan called for Nakul and asked him to call the doctor. The doctor came and said it could be because she hadn't eaten anything since morning. He prescribed some medicines and left. SD slowly gained consciousness.

Daadi: Maan bete?

Maan: Daadi please kuchh mat boliye. Yeh lijiye soup pijiye.
Daadi: pehle aap promise kariye ki aap Geet se shaadi karenge.
Maan saw the eagerness in her eyes. If her happiness meant killing his own, he was ready for it.

Maan: Haan, main Geet se shaadi karunga.👏

Location: Khurana pool side; Time: 5:00 p.m;

Maan sat next to the pool with a glass of wine in his hand and his eyes closed, relaxing his head back. His mind went back to his first memory of 'her''.

Flashback: Location: University College London; 7 years back; Fall semester;

Maan: 21yrs; Geet: 18yrs;

Maan had just graduated last summer as an architecture graduate and had started working as an intern in a prestigious architecture firm in London. He side by side was also working with the student's union of the university as a student councellor and helper in student related union chores.

It was a Saturday. And the new session for the year had to start the following Monday. Maan along with a team of some other seniors were leaving today for Heathrow airport to receive the new batch of students and take them to their respective departments and get them settled. (Ok! guys this thing really does exist in UK universities and is known as the 'meet and greet' program, where the seniors come to pick up the international freshers students who are tavelling alone).

Maan was the incharge of the meet and greet program and it was his duty to ensure that all the freshers were comfortably escorted to the university. Maan got down of the bus wearing a deep blue jeans, black boots and a reddish orange UCL sweatshirt with a hood. His lips pressed together with very light stubble giving him a firm jawline. He took off his shades and looked on his left for his best friend and another student's union member Mac.

Maan: Dude! So here we are. What's next?

Mac: there are 28 freshers arriving in the morning slot today and 9 in the evening slot. And we have three busses available to escort the freshers.

Maan: Okey Dokey! Then for the morning one you take bus no.1 ask Camelia to take bus no 2 and I'll take the third one, ten students each. And then I'll take care for the evening slot as well. Cool?

Mac: Cheers! I'll let Camellia know. She's in the other bus. And yeah! Here are the three lists with the freshers' names. Ah! Choose whichever you like, before Camelia gives her preference. God I just hate coming with her. Girlfriends can be so irritating sometimes!

Maan smiled. He went through the three lists.

Geet's name caught his attention, a girl from India. Whether it was her name or the fact that she was from India? He didn't know but there was a curiosity to meet her.

Mac: Any preferences?

Maan: yeah! Ah, I'll take second one.

Mac: Cool. He took the other two lists and towards Camelia.

Maan stood there and smiled looking at her name once again. He then put his shades back on once again and moved towards the arrivals Hall.

Flashback ends!

Present Location: Pool side; Time: 5:30 p.m;

Maan jerked out of his thought hearing Arnav coming towards him and calling for him.

Arnav: Bhai? Aap abhi tak tayiyar nahi huye? Humme Bhabhi ke yahan jaana hai na?

Maan: Chhote, main nahi chalunga. Tum log jau.
He said so taking a sip of his wine.

Arnav sighed and sat next to his brother.

Arnav: Bhai' Main nahi jaanta ki aap kis wajah se shaadi nahi chahte. Main jaanta hoon ki hamare family problems ki wajah se aapne kitna kuchh khoya hai. Par Bhai, believe me Bhabhi ke aane baad sab badal jaayega.

Maan slowly looked towards Arnav. He didn't remember when was the last time his brother had come and sat with him talking about their family and their lives. Though he always knew that Arnav loved him, he smiled inwardly seeing his brother caring for him.

Arnav: Mujhe nahi pata ki aap iss wajah se pareshaan hai ya phir wajah woh ladki hai?

Maan's smile disappeared and he looked the other way.

Arnav: Mujhe uss ladki ke bare mein kuchh bhi nahi pata. Uska naam bhi nahi. Aur main jaanna bhi nahi chahta. Par Bhai mein Geet ka naam jaanta hoon aur yeh bhi ke woh aapko bohot khush rakhegi.

Maan looked back again towards Arnav.

Maan: Bohot badha ho gaya hai tu. Jaa Daadi wait karahi hongi.
He started drinking his wine once again.

Arnav: Ghar par aaj koi bhi nahi hai. Aap dinner time par kar lijiyega. And take care of yourself.
Arnav smiled at his brother and left for the Handa Haveli.
