There are many things that are not mentioned in the Harry Potter books, but which are found through the interviews of J.K.R. Rowling has been pleasant enough to clear our misconceptions and confusions.
* Prefects can dock points off. Ron is not aware of this so he makes a poor prefect.
* Fred and George Weasley were born on April Fool's Day.
* Ginny Weasley's first name is Ginevra, and she is the first female Weasley for several generations.
* Arthur Weasley has two brothers.
* The infamous Weasley cousin who was cut off from the books was called Mafalda and was in Slytherin.
* Dean Thomas was named Gary in the first draft of the Philosopher's Stone.
* Dean's father was killed by the death eaters when he refused to join them. Neither Dean nor his mother know this.
* James Potter was a Chaser on Gryffindor Quidditch team. (Seeker in movies).
* Hermione's birthday is on September 19th and Ron's on 1st August.
* James Potter inherited a lot of money and didn't need a well-paying job.
* Dumbledore is 150 and McGonagall is 70 and Snape is 35 or 36.
* Ghosts are people who died when they were sad or angry.
* Azkaban is in a sea, north of the North sea, a very cold sea.
* A magical quill detects the birth of every magical child, and records it in a book. Professor McGonagall sends an owl to every child when he or she turns eleven.
* For Hagrid, keeping dangerous creatures is all about overcoming something that could kill him.
