Chapter 15: Mystery Solved
Everyone was present in Khurana Mansion. Dadi, Yuvraj and Sheilja sat on the sofa, while the three brothers stood. Annie was also present and eager to know what the entier mystery was all about.
Ferri spread all her findings over the table. She sat back and started to explain:
"Dev had asked me to find out about two things. Firstly, who was interested in Annie's murder and why and secondly who the previous owner of the castle was.
I will answer the second question at first. Annie is as you all might be aware of, to some extent an Indian. Her great grandmother was born in India, to an indian couple. After her marriage she then moved to Italy. I traced Annie's family back and found following information. Indira Bacchio was born as Indira Pradhan to a lady called Gayatri Devi. She was locally known as Ranimaa." Dadi was stunned. She knew of Ranimaa from her own grandmother.
"Annie is a descendant of Ranimaa? How can that be?" she asked. Ferri continued, not answering the question.
"Ranimaa had two more daughters the oldest being Gayatri and the youngest being Sharmila. I will not go much into detail but as it happends, I found two other descendants from Ranimaa one of which you know." They looked at each other.
"She works as an architect in Khurana Constructions. Pinky Manchanda." Dev was flabbergasted. How come Pinky never told him?
"The reason I am going through all this is because Gayatrinagar was named after Ranimaa. The castle was her home in which all three sisters lived till they got married. That is, only two did. If what I have found so far is correct, then technically the entire property around Gayatrinagar including the castle belongs to Pinky, Annie and Pinky's brother Brij Handa."
"Pinky has a brother?" Another shocking news for everyone as they were not aware of Pinky having any siblings.
"Yes, and she only found out by change a day ago."
"But I still don't get why Annie was attacked?" Sheilja asked.
"Brij knew nothing about his sister because she was given away shortly after her birth. No one apart from Mr and Mrs Manchanda and her real mother knew. This leads to the conclusion that Brij and Annie are the only inheritor of this land in the eyes of the rest of the world. Annie was an easy target as she was not aware of being connected to India in such a way."
"But why didn't they kill me off before? Why wait so long?" Annie asked. Ferri smiled.
"It was because of your decision to stay back. You see, for a foreigner like you it might be an adventure to live in a haunted castel. An indian would never imagine that you would give up all luxery you had to move to an unknown country and then into a place so old and deserted. They had thought you would easily comply to sell the house and be gone."
"But she changed her mind at a short notice and the only one who knew was the lawyer." Veer concluded.
"Wait a minute, doesn't that mean that it was Brij who wanted Annie dead? She is the only one standing in his way of getting everything." Maan said.
"No, he couldn't know about this. Raj Oberoi, who was Gayatri's son, left everything to his cousin Anvesha, Indira's daughter. This means that now, Annie inherits everything."
"Didn't he have any children?" Dadi asked.
"Yes he had a daughter called Suman. It is indeed strange why he didn't leave anything to his other sister Sharda but he will have had his reason."
"But if Brij doesn't know anything then who will benefit from killing Annie and letting Brij have everything?" This was the question that everyone asked themselves. Then, Dev thought of something.
"Wait a minute." They all looked at him.
"Pinky told me that she is going to Hoshiarpur. She is going to Brij's wedding. That means…" Ferri got up at once.
"That means that Pinky is in danger. Brij's marriage means that his property would go over to his wife after his death. Whoever was after Annie will also try to get rid of Brij and now also Pinky. We have to do something."
Brij and Preeti bend down to take the blessings from the elders. Daarji wished them well and looked up again to see Pinky. This young and sweet girl had not only caught his attention when Brij had brought her along. He had simple said that she was a friend from Delhi who would leave a day after the wedding. Daarji was not so easily convinced. He trusted Brij but was still unsure about Pinky.
"Bhai" Pinky spoke in a low voice to Brij, who was holding a plate with food.
"What is it Pinky?"
"I am not feeling well about being here. Everyone is looking at me."
"Don't worry. It is just unusual for a guy to bring along a girl to his own wedding. You are going back tomorrow anyways so don't bother." Brij took Pinky to Preeti.
"Preeti, meet Pinky." Pinky hugged the bride and said:
"Congratulations, bhabi." Preeti's confusion was lifted when she was adressed as bhabi and so was Daarji's.
"Brij puttar, come here." The wedding was now over and almost all had retired to their beds.
"Ji daarji."
"Tell me honestly, who is this girl you brought along?" Brij looked into his grandfather's face.
"Don't you trust me?" Brij tired to change the topic.
"You know I do but I am asking because something struck me today. I saw the girl and felt like her face resembles someone. Then, she called Preeti bhabi." Brij knew he knew now.
"Is she Rano's daughter?" Daarji asked directly to which Brij nodded.
"Daarji, did you know I had a sister?" Brij wondered.
"I knew that Rano had given birth to a girl but Rano and Mohinder said she died. I trusted them but as it turns out, they hadn't been honest with me either." Brij looked into the sky.
"Pinky is living with her parents in Delhi, I do not want her to feel torn between them and us. I simply wanted her to be there at my wedding. Who knows if I ever get to meet her again."
"I understand. But I want to know, why Rano gave her away."
Finally, the entire village was asleep. Pinky had been given a room to stay at the Handa Haveli. The servant had brought her a glass of milk and she drank it all up. She sat on her bed and wandered about what all was happening in her life. All this time she had only her parents and KC but now she had a brother, sister-in-law, a whole family in fact. She wasn't feeling well. Gladly she would be going back to Delhi tomorrow. She thought of Dev and wanted to send him a text. She switched on her mobile and yawned. Then she saw all the missed calls and voice messages. She leaned back and started to hear them. Halfway through, she fell asleep.
"She is sleeping. I think the sleepign drug is already working." Lacchi got some money for her work and left hurriedly so that noone saw her. The man went up the balcony and entered Pinky's room. His work was easy, all he had to do was knif her. He couldn't risk anyone hearing a gun shot. Then, he would finish off Brij. Not that this was planned but circumstances had changed tonight. He lifted his knif and ran it into the sleeping form. He took the knif and went to his next victim. Brij's room was not far. He made sure that the newly weds were asleep. Then he opened the door and made his way to the bed.
"Welcome" a voice said and the lights went on. Brij, Dev, Maan and Veer were standing in all four corners of the room. The bed was unslept in and Brij was still in his sherwani.
"Raghu, you?" Brij was showing fake surprise. Raghu was the local goon, clear that he would be the one given the dirty work to do. Raghu was cornered but still tried to run.
Maan knocked him over and Brij lifted him again.
"Who send you?" Raghu's silence followed a few hard blows and then Brij asked again.
"I will not tell" Raghu said with great difficulty. He had no chance against the four men and was seriously injured.
"Oh yes you will." Brij brought out a revolver and held it at Raghu's temple.
"You chose, your life or that of your employer." Raghu was no idiot and valued his life more than that of anyone else. And he also knew that Brij was not joking.
The police had been called but Tejawar and his wife Pammi had fled so had their son Lucky. Preeti had fallen on her knees and begged everyone to believe her that she didn't know about anything. Brij took her into his arms and consoled her. He himself could not believe her to be involved in such dark doings.
Ferri had finally, after long time of trying gotten hold of Brij and informed him. Brij had sprang into action and observed how Lacchi came out of Pinky's room. He went in and found her in deep sleep. With Dev's help, whom he had let in through the front door, they replaced Pinky with a lot of pillows and covered it with a blanket. Maan and Veer had looked out for the man and made sure to warn Brij and Dev in the right time.
Everyone was very much distressed. Preeti tried to wake Pinky and after some doing, she woke up.
"Dev?" she got up but held her head which was spinning badly.
"It is ok, Pinky. Let me tell you what happened." Dev repeated the events of the night. He also narrated with the help of Ferri, how Tejawar attempted twice to kill Annie.
Rano stood in the corner of the room. Her eyes didn't leave Pinky and silent tears ran down her face. She looked exactly like herself. A little more chubby than she would have expected her to be but then she knew that Amro would pamper her daughter to no extent.
Pinky wanted to go home. Home where her mother was and away from this place. Brij and Daarji gave Rano a silent look but didn't say anything to her. They wanted her to speak up herself, to explain herself and till that time, they would not bother her. After all, the danger was over now.

For illustrative purposes I am posting this family tree that I set up. Just so that you can follow what Ferri is telling every one and so that things don't confuse you.
