Smells Like Teen Spirit
Elena's alarm goes off at 5:15 a.m. She covers up the bite marks on her neck with make-up. Alaric takes her out into the woods for training on using vampire weapons. She's having a hard time admitting she might have to use them on Stefan since Klaus made him flip the switch on his humanity. She's not strong enough. At school, it's the start of senior year. Elena realizes it's her one year anniversary with Stefan. She's resolved to put it behind her. Damon comes downstairs and has to step over women on the stairs. He finds Stefan playing drinking Twister, where he takes a bite for each square the women spin to. Rebecca barges in. Klaus left her there and she announces she'll be staying with them. Bonnie sees Jeremy and is irked that he's been seeing his ex-girlfriends' ghosts. Matt drives up to school and suddenly Vicki appears in the truck with him. He's glad to be able to talk to her about life stuff. She tells him there's a way he can help her "come back." They're interrupted by Tyler. Katherine tries to wake up Michael, but he won't eat. She answers Damon's call. "Try harder. We need him to kill Klaus so I can de rip-ify Stefan before he destroys my house," Damon tells her. Katherine sees a mourner in the graveyard and gets an idea. Damon calls Elena to warn them about their new housemate "Barbie Klaus." He won't tell her what Stefan is up to. Caroline puts up posters for the bonfire spirit event. Tyler kisses her. She and Elena drag him into the bathroom when they see blood on his shirt. He says it was from a blood bag Rebecca gave him. Klaus told her to protect his new "asset." Tyler is excited to be Klaus' first successful hybrid. Elena leaves the bathroom and runs into Stefan. He says he's going back to school because Klaus told him to. Alaric interrupts. Stefan pushes him against a locker and warns him not to get in his way. Before class, Elena tells Ric they need to get rid of Stefan. He comes to class and takes a seat next to Elena. Then Rebecca joins them. Matt finds Vicki again. She says she has help from "the Other side." Jeremy walks out and sees Matt, but ignores Vicki. Inside, Jeremy tells Anna's ghost what he saw. Vicki's witch could do her spell from the other side so she won't need Matt to be thinking of her to appear. She says in a town of werewolves, vampires and witches she'll fit right in, but Matt is unnerved. Anna again tells Jeremy that Vicki is bad news. She says Vicki must have agreed to pay a price to use the witch's magic. Vicki makes a tearful plea to Matt, saying he won't have to be alone anymore. He asks what he has to do. At football practice, Rebecca joins the cheerleaders. She's interested in Caroline, and maybe Tyler. Tyler gets tired of running wind sprints and compels his coach to dismiss them early. Caroline busts him for being obvious about it, but he stays cocky, saying Klaus has given him a gift. Rebecca gets everyone's attention with gymnastics. Tyler is impressed. Stefan joins Elena on the track. He says he's the guy "assigned to protect the human blood bag." Katherine holds a dead man over Michael in his coffin and lets his blood drip into Michael's mouth. He wakes up enough to tell her to get the blood away. He's wrapped in tons of metal chains. Katherine remembers him from Chicago in the 1920s. Damon finds Elena pumping iron. She wants to lock Stefan up. Damon says Stefan is high on human blood, even without the compulsion. She asks for his help. He takes her and presses her hand to his chest, identifying his sternum. Then he gently touches her side and shows her a space in the rib cage that he says is the better way to a vampire's heart. He whispers in her ear that he'll help her and no one, especially not Stefan, will hurt her. Before the bonfire, Damon, Ric and Elena game plan. She'll lure Stefan away and Ric will shoot him. Caroline will prep the old Forbes' jail cell. Damon's job is to keep Rebecca away, using his wiles. Tyler joins them. They want him to raid his mom's vervane supply, but he says he can't. It's not in Klaus' best interest. He says again that Klaus made him who he is. Damon nonchalantly strolls over and picks up a weapon. Tyler turns to leave and Damon rushes him and stakes him in the neck. He explains that Tyler has been "sired" and will seek Klaus' approval because his blood made him. It's rare, but it happens. Stefan finds Rebecca at the bonfire. Elena grabs a beer from the keg, calls Stefan a "blood addict" and walks away. Alone at his house, with Vicki over his shoulder, Matt cuts his hand and drips blood on a photo of Vicki. Candles are lit all around. He says he accepts her and the candles flare and the picture smokes. Matt hugs Vicki -- he can feel her. Jeremy tries to tell Bonnie what Matt is up to, but she can't hear past her jealousy over Anna. Vicki puts her hand over flame, she can feel it. She says it works into her deal to restore the balance. Klaus' hybrids can't survive. She says Elena is the key. Matt realizes what she's talking about, but she knocks him out. "I'm sorry, Matty, but I want to stay," she says. At the raging bonfire, kids do keg stands and Elena acts like she's having a good time. Stefan watches her. She drinks up. Rebecca sits by herself next to a fire. Damon joins her and flirts to keep her distracted. Elena watches Damon and Stefan catches her staring at him. Stefan accuses her of being jealous. She walks off in a faux huff. Matt calls Bonnie, saying he messed up. Damon feeds Rebecca s'mores. She asks why he's trying to distract her and shoves her marshmellow roasting stick through his gut. Tyler wakes up on his couch. Caroline says she brought him home because he was being a d-bag. She tells him he was sired. She says he's been acting like the old him. He apologizes and says he doesn't want to be like that. He promises to try to control it. He kisses her. Stefan finds Elena drunk on the bleachers. He says he's going to drive her home. She climbs over the side of the bleachers and pretends to fall, then actually does. He races around and catches her. They have a brief moment before Alaric shoots him with vervane darts. The plan worked. Ric and Elena load him into a car. Vicki watches, smoking a cigarette. Ric notices an empty gas can by the car. Vicki tosses her butt into the trail of gas, leading to the car. It's quickly engulfed in flames. Elena tries to get out of the passenger side, but she's stuck. Vicki gets in the car with her and keeps her in. Ric goes for something to break the window with. It won't break. At the school, Bonnie finds a spell to block whatever magic is helping Vicki. She performs it with Matt. Elena wakes Stefan up in the back of the car. They're both starting to choke on smoke. He wakes up and kicks the back door open. Vicki drags Elena back in. Bonnie keeps chanting and yanks Vicki into the room with them. Vicki pleads for another chance as Matt says he can't let her hurt anyone. Matt says good-bye. Bonnie finishes the spell. Vicki is gone. Ric and Elena drag Stefan out of the car right before it explodes. At Damon's house, he patches her up. Elena tells him he played his part of the plan well. He says she did too. "I was faking most of it," she says. "So was I," he says meaningfully. Ric interrupts. At Tyler's house, he and Caroline put their clothes back on. She says good bye. Rebecca appears, bringing him a compelled bleeding woman. Tyler tells her to leave. Rebecca chomps down and then Tyler can't resist anymore. He bites into her neck. Back in the tomb with Michael, he explains he's been denying himself human blood for as long as he can remember. He asks Katherine to let him out of his chains and says he knows how to kill Klaus, and he will. She frees him. She suggests he needs to feed. He doesn't feed on living things. She's about to ask what he does feed on when he bites into her neck. Back at the boys' house, Elena tells Ric it's OK if he wants to be friends with Damon again. Stefan tells Elena and Ric they're better off with him around for protection. Elena tells him she's not giving up on him. "Do you have any idea how pathetic that makes you?" he asks. She jabs the darts she was wearing into his gut, saying it makes her strong. Jeremy leaves Bonnie another message. Anna appears. She asks him why he's thinking about her when he calls Bonnie. He can't stop thinking about her. She puts her hand up and he brushes her fingers. They can feel each other. She doesn't know how. Damon picks up after Stefan's mess in his house as someone runs around. He thinks it's Stefan. Then he's knocked across the room. Mason is back.

As Mystic Falls prepares to celebrate the traditional Illumination Night, the town is invaded by spirits of the dead. After a particularly violent encounter with an angry spirit, Damon asks Bonnie to find the reason behind the ghosts' surprising power. Elena convinces Jeremy to use his connection to the other side to help her find a new way to reach Stefan, leading Jeremy to a terrible choice. Finally, Alaric discovers a long-hidden clue to the past.
