Chapter 10 - Resistance

The Malhotra presence at the house continued, with Geet determined to pretend nothing had happened.

At first she had opted on ignoring Maan, however she was fearful for her job. This job was the only thing which was providing her with a roof over her head, & she couldn't risk it because she felt uncomfortable.

Determined to present an unaffected front, Geet kept herself busy away from the scrutinising gazes of the Malhotra ladies, remaining by Madhuri's side in the kitchen.

She monotonously washed the dishes as her mind remained with the encounter that had occured between herself and Maan a few hours ago.

Maan had wanted to talk to Geet at least, to clear the tension between them. She had come out of her reclusive state in her room yet had disappeared straight to the kitchen, leaving him with his guests.

He turned away from Sasha who was sat opposite him, stealing glances.

"How about we go out for a ride, Mr Maan?" Mr Malhotra suggested.

"Of course." He swiftly rose & left the room, Mr Malhotra trailing behind. He heard the excited whispers of the women as the door closed shut.

Half an hour later, Maan & his horse were pounding well ahead of Mr Malhotra. He appeared to have ignored his guest as his mind trailed back to Geet. He was unconsciously going faster as his knuckled tightened on the reins, his eyes dark pits as he stared straight ahead.

"Mr Maan!" Malhotra called, struggling to keep up. Maan didn't hear his voice from the loud clicking of his horse's hooves and Geet's voice which spun around in his head.

Malhotra used all his strength to ride his horse faster, picked up with Maan's pace and jutted the horse out in Maan's direction. Maan immediately stopped, jerking forward on his horse with the abruptness.

"I apologise - Mr Maan, but I have - been calling - you for quite - some time now." Malhotra gasped breathlessly, coming off his horse.

"Deepest apologies, I didn't mean to blank you," he replied, also jumping down from his horse.

They held their horses by the reins as they walked, an awkward silence filling the air.

"You must be aware of my Sasha's inclinations towards you."

"I am," Maan replied, feeling a little awkward. He knew Sasha had liked him since their teenage years but he had never reciprocated her feelings.

"She would be the happiest girl alive if you were to... if you were to take her hand in marraige."

Maan stopped in his tracks, looking down once then at Malhotra, surprise etched across his face at the sudden proposal.

"I'd really rather have my dinner in here."

Geet had been informed that, as usual, she was to dine at the dinner table, only this time with Maan and the Malhotras present. She felt her stomach churn at the mere thought & was trying to convince Madhuri to let her stay in the kitchen.

"I am very sorry Miss Geet but I cannot allow you to do that. You must keep an eye on Amelia."

"The Malhotras are-"

"Downright rude, snobbish & unpleasant people," Madhuri saw Geet's worried face & cupped her cheek. "I know, unfortunately I've met them many times. But this is just something you have to do my dear, and if Sasha becomes Mr Maan's wife then you'll be seeing a lot more of her than you'd like."

"If she became his wife I'd leave," Geet whispered.

"Did you say something?"

"No, I was just wondering how long this dreadful dinner is going to be."

"Longer, I'm afraid. I have five courses prepared, on the Malhotras request."

She could feel his gaze as he stole glances at her.

Geet told herself to focus on ensuring Amelia, who sat obediently next to her, finished her food. She remained detached from the conversation and kept her eyes downcast, suddenly finding the hem of her long dress very interesting.

Maan sat a few chairs away, at the head of the table. Mr Malhotra sat to his left, Amelia in the middle and Geet at the end. He tried to maintain interest but couldn't keep his eyes away from Geet, who was avoiding everyone and everything in the room apart from Amelia and the floor.

He just wanted her to look at him. Even one brief moment of his eyes meeting her beautiful hazels would suffice.

But he knew Geet wouldn't look at him, especially not in this room as she sat opposite the intimidating Malhotra ladies.

He clenched the table as he cursed his fate, cursed himself for being in a position where he had fallen so weak to one girl who remained indifferent to his feelings and where he felt obliged to be decent to another girl, whom he personally couldn't stand but who was more than willing to become his.

Geet was growing impatient; she felt like she had been sat in the chair forever. It didn't help that she felt like she was being placed under a microscope by Maan.

As if her prayers were answered at that moment, Amelia whispered to Geet that she had finished. Geet stood up, allowing Amelia to pass through and leave the room, who was behaving well with the Malhotra visit and hadn't been rude and impolite to them as usual.

Maan watched as Geet collected her barely untouched food and Amelia's empty plated; a job which was not her own. It was almost as if she wanted to be seen as beneath him, as beneath everyone else. Why was she doing this to herself?

As her back turned to him and she made her way out of the room, his chest constricted as he realised he could not let her go.

"I accept the engagement proposal to Miss Sasha, Mr Malhotra," Maan announced.

He averted his gaze as Geet turned back to look at him, evident pain & heartache etched across her face. She watched as the Malhotras beamed & Sasha was greeted with many congratulations from her family members. Her eyes travelled to Maan, who was trying to keep his control and focused on his glass in front of him, appearing to be devoid of all emotion.

She was about to turn back when he suddenly looked up at her tear filled eyes, as she bore into his irises which held a new depth of raw emotion. She had to turn away, as she fought back her tears and carried the dishes to the kitchen as Maan watched her figure disappear and his nails bore into his fist as his hands tightened.

Short update, I know. Apologies.
But I am so busy lately, everything is crazy hectic.
It's already 12.30am, I have to be up at 7am for college. Urgh.

Do you guys want me to update after a few weeks and make the updates longer or do one every week but keep it fairly short? Your wish is my command 😊
