Mystic Musings
S3E05: The Reckoning

This one is long and not very sensible in the beginning. It took me awhile to get into a groove. Also, this Musings is HIGHLY BIASED. My Stefan&Matt love is very obvious in this.

Note: highly biased views below.
Other Note: Please no bashing (I tried to keep from what I see as bashing, but other people might think differently, so I apologise, but really, biased views. I love all characters (most of the time) but this episode had me having loads of opinions.)

Overview

This episode was Matt's. It was all Matt's. Zach Roerig was the star of this episode, with Paul Wesley not far behind. They were flawless in this episode. How is it possible for my heart to break because of two fictional characters?

Who You Gonna Call? [Ghostbusters!]

Or in this case, the only one who can see ghosts. I'm not entirely sure if I'm happy that the potential separate, non-Elena centered storyline Jeremy had has become central to the show. I liked him having a separate storyline. This show needs to learn how to maintain that. But I've got to admit, it gave for great scenes in the episode.

Everyone realizing that Jeremy speaking to ghosts could help them out at the same time? Only on this show. *shakes head* I mean seriously, Katherine kidnapping Jeremy to get him to help? That was pretty epic. I think I like Katherine/Jeremy scenes. I love how snarky Jeremy gets. And I adore Anna/Jeremy scenes. I've missed those two together. I used to ship them so much, still do.

The fact that Anna is still so completely in love with Jeremy despite being, you know, dead and a ghost, is all sorts of romantic and epic. And I'm pretty sure Jeremy's still sort of in love with her too. I think he can't fully move on from both Vicki and Anna (or couldn't) because they'd died. It wasn't as though they'd broken up and then moved on, they'd just died and he'd moved on but now he can see them again so all those feelings are cropping back up. I hope it doesn't screw up the Bonnie/Jeremy relationship though, because Jeremy can not be with a ghost. That's just messed up. If they bring Anna back somehow then that's a whole other thing.

And then we have Matt, who in a very brilliant idea (though stupid because come on, he's one of my favourite characters and if he gets killed off I'm done with the show) decides that killing himself and getting Bonnie to bring him back would be a good idea since Jeremy is MIA. I don't know whether to hug the man or hit him over the head for thinking of it. A huge part of me wanted to just give him a huge hug when he and Bonnie were TP-ing the pool and he was talking about how lost he was.

Matt's got such heart. I love that despite everything, he's willing to do anything to protect his friends, to try and help them. (And I love that Tyler recognized how alone Matt is. Even if he did just ignore it after and make out with Caroline.) Zach's acting, the depth he brings to Matt, it's just wonderful. There's this look he gets in his eyes that makes me really believe that Matt's alone and starting to believe he doesn't have anything worth living for. I might be the only one to believe that, but I sincerely think that Matt wouldn't have minded even if he had really drowned. He'd be upset he couldn't help everyone, yes, but then he wouldn't have to live alone anymore.

So Bonnie's speech to him at the end, about being normal? As well-meaning as she was, I think she doesn't really get that all Matt wanted was his friends, no matter what because they are all he has. I'm really glad he can see Vicki now, because even if it's crazy and makes his life messed up, he's got Vicki, and he can see and talk to her. He's not alone.

Magic's Not All She's About

Bonnie is awesome. I would say that is all, but it's not. I'm so glad that Matt recognized Bonnie's worth, and not just as a witch. "You just have to be better than I was at CPR" might be my favourite line in the episode. Well that and "Consider me jealous."

Original Pain(-In-My-***)

I like Rebekah less than I like Klaus. No wait, more correctly, I think Rebekah is more evil and dangerous than Klaus. She looked so disdained about that fact that Klaus' reasoning behind making his hybrids was that he didn't want to be alone. She's definitely a wild card. I hope they don't make her semi-sympathetic like they did Klaus (though Joseph is brilliant at emoting). I like how self-absorbed Rebekah is, she's a breath of fresh air on this show.

Lost Love

Paul Wesley breaks my heart. The way he expressed Stefan's heartbreak, his fear at hurting Elena, his love for Elena - it all just broke my heart. There is no way they can make me hate Stefan, this episode just proved that. The writers took Stefan's love for Elena and made it this thing that is impossible for him to break without someone forcing his hand. Anybody saying otherwise is not watching the same show as me.

Even Elena knows that his love for her is the strongest thing in him. That exchange between them, the way Stefan kept running himself into walls and lockers to keep from reaching Elena and hurting her, and then stabbing himself - gah, Stefan is just amazing.

It took Klaus compelling him for him to hurt Elena's friends (his own friends) and then it took Klaus compelling him again to turn it off, turn his feelings off, for him to become this really cool, aloof person. As fun as I think this new Stefan may be (I'm imagining snarkiness and just general fun from him a la Damon season 1), the real Stefan is going to be so broken when the compulsion breaks.

Even Klaus has acknowledged how much Stefan loves Elena, what lengths Stefan will go to to protect Elena. And he's in awe of it. That strength of his love for Elena will somehow overcome the compulsion, I hope. It'll be there, in glimpses, and it'll keep Elena hoping that her Stefan will be back. I cannot wait.

Just - oh.my.gosh. Klaus understanding the lengths Stefan would go through to save Elena was the highlight. I mean, when the villain can recognise the epicness of the love Stefan has for Elena, you know it means something. and I think Klaus respects him for that, and hates Elena for it because Klaus likes Stefan, likes working with him, being his friend/brother.

Some part of Stefan, underneath the compulsion is going to rebel and force it's way out over the season, fighting to love Elena like he wants too. He's fought Klaus' compulsion once, he'll try to do it again, underneath switching it 'off'.

Klaus having to compel Stefan again, and again, and again for it to even stick just shows how much Stefan loves Elena. It means everything to him, his love for her is his strength, and is stronger than everything and it's just so epic.

Famous Last Words

Michael is going to cause a lot of chaos for everyone isn't he? Oh well, Anna did warn them.
