😭 Yesterday, I watched a Hollywood movie called Contagion directed by Steven Soderbergh. It has an all-star cast of seasoned actors like Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The movie is about a disease that becomes a worldwide epidemic and millions of people die! It was a very well-done piece of filmmaking and makes me wonder if Bollywood can attempt a MEDICAL THRILLER! I guess these type of themes would cater to the selective that appreciate meaningful cinema! But, getting a killer cast and director attached will be the hardest part! You cannot have songs in a movie like this! Is it appropriate to sing songs when people are dying?!
Anyway, can Bollywood attempt a MEDICAL THRILLER?! And if so, would the result be disastrous or come out with successful results? Please share your thoughts! 😲

I never saw the Constant Gardner, but this movie has a lot of intriguing themes like deceit, murder, etc.! I guess so! But, Bollywood has to treat a medical thriller as sensible and not ridiculous! 😉

After a film releases, the first thing a person asks is not "how good the film is" but "how much was the opening collection." And the audience is encouraging shit films like bodyguard, ready, golmaal becoming hits.

So even if bollywood wants to try it will fail because audience only wants to see the ghisa pita songs, dance, fighting, romance, happy climax etc

no wonder good movies like udaan, guzaarish dont make a lot of money

I think thats a huge generalization, and also can be reversed and said about all other film industries. The majority always wants an easy film with hot people in it. Such is true in hollywood, bollywood, tollywood, south american cinema, etc etc.

BUT. I will say, times are changing in India. the masses want quality now, and everyone seems to understand that though 'bodygaurd' may have been a hit, it wasn't exactly groundbreaking cinema. Our general population can make quite a distinction now between what is crap and what is good. Sure they may still go to see the crap, but i think the general outlook on what films can offer has definitely changed. You honestly just have to log onto the internet to see the huge negative reactions indian filmgoers are begining to have about empty no brainer blockbuster.
Not to mention how our industry has begun to open the gates for alternative film makers.

I have hope in our industry, the audience needs to fight back and i think they will eventually.

i dont think so. Its not like I hate entertaining movies. I love them too. I LOVED 3 Idiots. But shit like bodyguard, ready, golmaal is NOT entertaining. But still ppl are encouraging it = they r being entertained by this shit. U say every1 criticizes those films after watching it. OK, a sane person who watched ready and finds it shitty will NEVER watch a movie like that again. Then why did every1 turn up again for Bodyguard? I mean it was not path breaking or anything that they hoped it will be any better than Ready?

I repeat, Bollywood can attempt a medical thriller. But to be successful you have to put silly fighting scenes, songs, dance, blah blah blah and make it a potboiler to make it a hit

But Udaan, Guzarish AND Stanley ka dabba all did get a lot of exposure. None of them were considered 'bad movies'. 10 years ago none of those movies would have even been released. Do you understand my point?

I thought bodygaurd was shitty too, but i think you disregard the fact that more than 50% of indians are not slick citygoing kids who want to see a film like say 'shaitan' or even 3 idiots. They are workers, people in poverty, people in rural areas, people just trying to get by.

You can't just shit on an entire country because not everyone understands that READY isn't great. Maybe you and i get it, but its because were looking for different things in cinema.

Look at the audience and look at WHY this is happening. You think someone who drives an autorickshaw all day wants to come home and watch a psychologically moving masterpiece or do yout hink they want to see a fun movie where salman khan dances around and sings and acts stereotypical.

Of course they would pick the later. Of course they would pick escapism. And theres nothing wrong with that. The change will come not from the industry, and not from the types of movies we make, but from the people. The better our country gets economically, the better we get at 'sealing' the gaps and our rich poor divide, then naturally our films will reflect such a change and also give the people what they want.

I understand your point, but i don't tihnk you are taking a lot of things into consideration. Its not just bollywoods fault that a lot of what it produces is dumb and overdone, a lot of time an industry reflects what their audience wants. More people now want quality, there are still many who just want a simple masala film to escape the constraints of reality. I wouldn't take that away from them. even if i think those films are by and large terrible these days.

true...films like Kambakthq ishq and Tees maar khan were technically "hits" but no one ever mouths a single word of praise for those movies...they were hits because they didnt have much competition and the audience were like "nothings playing? oh well, lets watch KI or TMK then"...not because the audience were like "OMG...the movie's awsome, lets watch it again!!!"

No I doubt it because this is very Bollywood can't seem to succeed with the Arts movies making them commercial success.

I mean a movie like Black Swan, it was so intense you were gripped from the opening credits till the end all you heard was pin drop silence in the cinema, To have that sort of effect is something.

There have been movies that have been critically acclaimed in Bollywood but not apperciated by the common cinema going public because to be honest they don't want to watch some arts film that has a message they want to be entertained paisa waslu... and its not their fault it is because of the economy and the life style they have.

@Charming Prince: things go up and down. I think its Salmans 'time' right now. Its not particularly his movies that people are crazy about, its more his overall star appeal. Honestly, give it like less than 2 years and things are going to evolve yet again.

And yeah i agree, even if you want to escape via film YES you can choose the 'better made' masala film. In the 90's i thought there was a great balance between blockbuster and quality. Hopefully we can do this again.

Even worst than salman, the film i least look forward to is 'Desi Boyz'. It actually looks freaking awful.
