Rishi Kapoor says he is selective about his films because there are not too many roles written for him today
In spite of being relegated to a character role, Rishi Kapoor has been applauded for his performance in Fanaa. The actor attributes this success to his fighting spirit. A spirit, that has clinched him Vipul Shah's next, besides another release this week – Love Ke Chakkar Mein. Of his part in Fanaa, he says, "My role is small, but I am happy."
After Hum Tum, Kapoor was gung ho about working with director Kunal Kohli, "Both my films with Kunal have been successful. Kunal is very fond of the Raj Kapoor school of filmmaking," he says.
This brings him to talk about son Ranbir, who is currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. "He is the first Kapoor to face the camera this millennium? I think Kareena started shooting in 1999… I just hope Ranbir can do what his grandfather and great-grandfather achieved," he says. "Sanjay Leela Bhansali just happened to the boy. I always keep telling him not to take success to his head and failure to his heart. I've advised him to work hard and mind his own business."
Why does Rishi himself not take up more acting projects? "Who writes roles for me now?" he questions. "I enjoyed doing Hriday Shetty's Love Mein Twist. I know it didn't work, but so what?"
So how did he get down to doing Love Ke Chakkar Mein? "The film's hero, who is also the producer, insisted that I be a part of the film. Besides, the director B.H.
Thaurun Kumar is the choreographer of one of my hit films. I couldn't refuse," he says. "There's no star power in the film. I'm a character actor. Today, you have to have a huge hero and heroine like Aamir and Kajol in Fanaa to carry a film. I've lost count of the number of crappy roles I've said no to. I don't want to play stupid 'father' roles."
Kapoor is far more enthusiastic about Vipul Shah's love story set in London. "The story is like Mani Ratnam's Mouna Ragam. Vipul told me he was keen to have me do the film. I'm flattered to know that filmmakers still think about casting me. "
Does he plan to make a film himself? "I'm an actor first," Rishi says. "Secondly, I'm not in the right frame of mind to direct again. Besides, where are the stories? I don't know what to make for RK FILMS. I'm not a filmmaker who'd make just about anything to propagate the banner. I can't damage RK Films and my reputation," he says.
